We had the Gaggia Anima Prestige for over 5 yrs. It was a great machine. I just ordered the Magenta Plus. They look like very similar machines. Only the touch screen looks different, and the Magenta plus has the foaming wand instead of the carafe. Very excited for it to show up! Thanks for the video!

Hi JM, Thanks for the report on your Anima! They are similar machines internally with the new touch screen and frothing wand on the Plus model being the big difference. Also new drinks with inclusion of the true Americano on the Magenta.

How does this machine mimic drip coffee? Does the brew unit filter the coffee in any way?
@RaveyDavey

Is it not a bit weird that the smallest shot you can do is 30ml? If the max amount of coffee in a single pour is 11g and the smallest drink is 30ml (30g) then the lowest brew ratio possible is 1:2.7. Given modern espresso brew ratios are like 1:2 - 1:25, it would appear you cannot actually pull a modern espresso. But then I believe all B2C machines are like this

I've had my Magenta Plus for a couple days. The pucks are now nice and dry. I've maxed out my settings to approach a Ristretto (smallest volume with highest dose) but the shot only takes about 3 seconds. Seems kind of fast. While the coffee that came with the machine isn't bad, it might not be at peak freshness. What's a good shot duration with very fresh coffee? Thanks.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage Жыл бұрын
Hey CAT, Thanks for the comments and question. It does take a number of grind cycles for the grinder to adapt and provide proper and consistent doses based on coffee used. Before that happens coffee may be weak and pucks on the wet side. Compared to commercial extractions on a semi-automatic machines 3 seconds is fast. But one can't use that comparison as brewing mechanism and coffee dose weight is different. Good shot duration on super-auto bean to cup machines is almost always shorter than what one gets from semi-auto machines.

Thanks. So, 3 seconds is about right? Then, I'll move on to different blends for more crema, maybe something with a bit of Robusta in it. I also want o try your Crema Wave but I have quite a lot left of the Gaggia. I'll use it till it runs out or starts to seem stale.
@Wholelattelovepage

@@cat-a-tonic150 You're welcome! Robusta in the blend generally creates crema. The Crema Wave is a 100% specialty grade Arabica blend roasted locally so is almost always much fresher than Italian import coffees - also a good crema producer!

Thanks for the review! Just got a magenta plus from your Amazon store. I used it for a few days and I’m concerned it has an internal leak. When I first turn on the machine and it does the initial rinse, no water comes out from the front of the machine, but rather in the drip tray. Is that normal? I typically collect the rinsed water in the separate cup at the beginning and the end but the drip tray always has some water in it. Thanks so much for any insights.

Thanks for all of your amazing informative reviews. I’ve spent the last 6 or so hours watching many videos of yours!! My question is what machine do you think is the easiest/quickest to maintain and clean? I will be using the milk function regularly. I’ve been considering the various Jura 8s, the various Gaggias (incl Accademia, Baliba and Cadorna Prestige) and Delonghi. It appears from your reviews that the quality of coffee is similar. So, for me, it now seems to come down to easy quick use:maintenance/cleaning. Don’t need large volume (unless larger = easy clean etc!!!). Thanks
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hey SS, You are welcome for the reviews! Oh my... 6 hours watching our vids! You say you'll be using milk function regularly so I'll start there. I personally prefer Gaggia machines with milk carafes for ease of use and maintenance so the Accademia, Babila, Magenta Prestige and Cadorna Prestige. With those pull the carafe from the fridge, attach to machine and you're ready to go. When done with milk drinks all those machines have a quick clean function which puts hot water/steam through the frothing components leaving the carafe ready to go back in the fridge very quickly and ready to go for next time. In the Accademia and Babila the quick clean routes the hot water/steam through the handle of the carafe and into the drip tray so there's no mess. on the Magenta and Cadorna the hot water steam exits the spout of the frothing carafe and falls into the drip tray. All the machines have a deeper cleaning function of the carafe that should be run 1x a week or so depending on usage. For that you add a bit of cleaning fluid to water in the carafe attach to machine and the machine does the rest. Jura machines use a pickup tube to get milk to the frothing components. You can drop that tube in a milk container or connect to a Jura milk supply accessory ranging from a glass container up to a countertop refrigerated unit. When done with milk most Jura machines have a quick rinse function. But you're left with that pickup tube which needs to be manually rinsed/washed. Jura machines have a deeper cleaning function using a milk cleaning solution as well. Depending on the machine you may get a special 2 chamber container which the milk pipe attaches to. One chamber gets the water/cleaning solution and the other collects the rinse. Push a button and the machine does the rest. I find the milk use and cleaning process a little faster with the carafes than with the pickup tubes. With machines from all manufacturers you will from time to time need to disassemble a couple of the frothing components and clean them manually. Frequency depends on usage but every 7-10 days or when you notice a decrease in frothing performance. Jura machines do not have removable brew units. To clean the brew unit you insert a cleaning tablet into the pre-ground coffee bypass doser and the machine does the rest does the rest. It's about a 15 minute cycle and you'll fill the water reservoir and empty the drip tray a couple times. The machine will tell you when it's time to run the cycle. I have a Jura at home, make about 6 drinks a day and need to do the brew unit cleaning about 1x month. Gaggia machines do have removable brew units. For those remove the brew unit from the machine and rinse under room temp tap water (no soap or scrubbing) 1x week. About 1x a month use a tablet in the bypass doser to degrease the brew unit internals. It's a much faster process than on the Juras. Just put in the cleaning tablet and select a coffee/espresso to brew from pre-ground and its done in less than a minute. Descaling: All Gaggia machines will need to be descaled. Frequency depends on your water hardness and whether you use an in-reservoir filter. I use a Gaggia Cadorna Prestige in the studio. We make 5-10 drinks a day on that, have relatively soft water, use a filter and descaling frequency is probably every 3 months or so. For Jura machines no descaling is required if you use the in-reservoir filter. All current Jura machines use filters with RFID chips so the machine alerts you when it's time to change the filter and automatically senses when you do. Descaling any machine is a 20-30 minute process which the machines do automatically aside from filling reservoir and emptying drip tray as the machine direct you to do. I hope that helps! Marc

I was considering a quality grinder like the baratza sette 270 paired with the gaggia classic pro. Then I saw these videos and wondered why not make life simpler and get a magenta plus? Both around $850. Can you compare and contrast that decision? My only thought right away is most would consider the espresso off the classic pro single wall filter basket to be superior. Any other thoughts would be appreciated?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Luke, Thanks for the question. Had to chuckle a bit as "compare and contrast" brought me right back to high school English class! There is a trade-off of potential quality for convenience. With quality beans and good technique you can produce a superior espresso on the GCP. It takes time, effort and skill to do achieve consistently. I should also mention separate grinder and machine is messier and louder - especially with the Sette grinder. I use both semi-auto and super-automatic machines. Super-autos are quick. Turn it on and in less than a couple of minutes you can have a drink that in most cases is of better quality than mass-market chain coffee shops. With the GCP you can make drinks on par with high-end specialty cafes. Here's a video in which I make a flat white start to finish using a Sette and GCP. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZPPanWnfqmir6s It's a bit of a process but end quality is potentially a bit better than what you'd get from a super-auto. Of course on a super auto all you do is attach the milk carafe, push a button and the machine does the rest. Hope that helps! Marc

what does it mean if I don't get the liquid coffee output as per the menu? for example, I programmed a 1.3 oz espresso, but the machine only produced 0.95 oz.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi MV, Programmed liquid volumes can vary a bit. Water is measured by a flow meter prior to contacting the coffee. So different coffees may absorb more or less water during brewing and there's some variance based on coffee strength setting. Also variance based on the amount of crema a particular coffee produces with bubbly crema creating a greater volume in cup than a coffee which does not produce a lot of crema. You could program the espresso to a higher volume to get what you desire in your cup.

Hi Dan, Really should avoid beans with a lot of visible surface oils as they can clog the grinder. Do not use beans with more than 25% oil coverage. Hi Marc. Great review. Just started with one of these and have started with full strength full temp and finest grind. What are the best start settings for an Americano in terms of shot volume and numbers of shots. Read somewhere that starting with hot water and adding 2 shots espresso gives better crema. I don't understand how shot volume affect strength or flavour. I'd really appreciate some guidance on strength from volume v strength from coffee content option. Thanks again.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi pat, Thanks for the question. You started right with full temp, finest grind and full temp. From there, you can change to suit your taste and the coffee you are using. Starting with hot water and doing espresso over the top is what most call a long black. Going that route can result in a cap with more crema but doesn't really change flavor other than perhaps the first sip when bubbles pf crema break under your nose and may change mouthfeel a bit. There's no "right" recipe for an Americano. I make a couple every morning on a Gaggia Cadorna. I like 1.5oz espresso plus 4oz water with finest grind, full strength setting and high temp. Strength v. volume: As you put water through the coffee the longer you go the weaker it becomes. Beyond that, you may start to extract undesirable flavor - over-extraction resulting in excess bitterness. Much depends on the coffee used. With shorter espressos you usually get sweeter flavor. It's incredibly rare for me to use anything other than full strength setting on an automatic machine. In the end it all comes back to personal taste preference. Hope that helps! Marc

@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi g, You may still be in the period of the grinder and brew system adapting to you coffee. New out of the box it takes 6-10 brew cycles for the adapting system to do it's thing. When you change grind size in the future it takes a few cycles for the machine to adapt to the change as well. Timing of shots is not the same with super-automatic machines as it is with semi-autos. They all brew faster due to design of the brewing chamber. You're on the right track starting with grind set to finest. Also recommend using highest strength and temperature settings and back off on those if needed.
@spizera
@spizera Жыл бұрын
@@Wholelattelovepage why does it happen? why does the machine needs various brewing cycles to "adapt", i suppose it should occurs when using highest strength and temperature and you want to change to the lowest settings too right? do you hava a video explaining why and how this machine "adapt" to the new settings?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage Жыл бұрын
@@spizera Sorry no video explanation. Adaption happens in order to grind the proper amount of coffee. How much coffee is ground for a specific strength changes with bean type. For instance lighter roasted beans are generally denser with more weight per given volume than darker roasts. The grinder and dosing mechanism sense how much coffee is ground in a grind cycle and makes adjustments runs the grinder for fewer or more revolutions in subsequent grind cycles to adjust. This adjustment happens over a few grind cycles to avoid overdosing the brew group which could result in the machine rejecting the dose and wasting coffee. Brew temperature has no impact on this adjustment.

@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Sam, Are you really just asking for a friend? Lol, anyway no, they do not use a pressurized basket internally like the type you'd find in some lower cost entry-level espresso appliances. The type with one tiny hole which all the liquid must pass through. Internally these machines have a netal plate resembling what you'd see in the bottom of a standard non-pressurized filter basket. They are a bit smaller in surface area, but the principle is the same. You don't time shots on super-autos like you do on semi-autos. When I use super-autos I always start with grind set to finest, coffee strength (=dose weight) and brew temp set to highgest. From there I back off if needed based on flavor. If bitter set the grind a click or two coarser. If to strong turn down the strength.

However in your experience has the Magenta’s shorter steam wand ever proved a limitation in terms of being able to reach deep enough into the pitcher to reach just below the surface of the milk whilst angling the pitcher?

Dear Mark and Co. You guys have one of the best food channels out there. Very informative and very engaging :) I have a question that might be pretty unusual, but i would be hugely grateful for your help. I am visually impaired. I am legally blind but have useful peripheral vision to the point that i can walk without a cane but due to the lack of central vision i cannot read text even in very large writing and also i cannot recognise faces unless i am seeing someone in my periphery. Question: i want to buy a bean to cup fully automatic coffee machine. My preference is a Gaggia Cadorna. But my concern is that most coffee machines these days seem to function with a non-tactile touch screen display. This worries me that i might not be able to work the machine. It is also a challenge that due to lockdown, i cannot visit a show room to see a machine on display to figure out how big this problem might be in reality. Also it might be relavent that i live in the UK, so might possibly not have all the makes and models available that you have in Canada. Based on the above, can you recommend a fully automatic coffee machine to me? My preferences/possible solutions include: - a machine that even though it has a touch screen display, has a tactile button for when creating the final cup of coffee. I.e. if i need the touch screen to set my profile and preferences then i can do that with the help of someone, as long as the daily coffee making requires the push of a tactile button alone. - a manual based on a touch screen display can possibly work fine if in the settings, there is a ‘accessibility’ feature that allows for voice guidance - similar to how e.g. a iPhone has been made accessible for the blind. - a coffee machine that is operatable via a mobile phone app. Would. Also work well for me, as i could operate it fine via a iPhone. ;although my preference is a Gaggia Cadorna, i would consider a machine in a similar price range from any make or model as long as it makes a decent brew and is one that i can use via one of the above mentioned solutions. Any ideas? I was looking at the Cadorna with my daughter who is sighted and she said the Cadorna might work well for me - as once set up, i would need only to push a ‘favourites’ button that is tactile and this would bring up 4 icons on the screen, one for each person in our household. All i would then need to do is to select my profile, which i can do as my personal icon will always be in the same place and i can spot it from my preferal vision. Once i have done that, i would just need to press a tactile button for the cup of coffee. Is that right? Or are we missing anything? Eeerrrr..... the lengths i am going to for a nice cup of coffee at home ... hahaha Thanks in advance.

Hi Kianistani, Thanks a whole latte for your kind comments and question. I think the Gaggia Cadorna is a good solution. It does have 4 real buttons with a rubber sort of feel to them. Your daughter is giving good advice and you can operate the machine as she describes. I'm not aware of any touch screen machines which have accessibility features. There are some Jura machines with their smart connect feature which allows you to control the machine using Jura's J.O.E. app on an iPhone. You can even set it up to ask Siri to make your drinks. This video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKqmY2pnqKxom5Y demonstrates the app functionality on their higher end X8 model but it's available on many of their machines. I hope that helps! Marc

As much as I'd love to buy one of these I bought a gaggia cordona last year and had to return it twice they're toosensitive to dark roasted beans and if there any kind of sweat on them it will just fail the machine. Plastic Brew groups are a no no.

Hey Flexy, As you discovered dark roasted beans with excessive visible surface oils and beans flavored with sugary coatings should not be used in super-automatic machines. Those types of beans will clog grinders.
