I like to change coffees and brew methods regularly, my morning milk drinks is different from my mid-morning V-60 and my afternoon espresso or americano. I also appreciate the precision of just weighing the beans upfront and just work with that. No waste and always keep the beans stored away from oxigen. But to each its own. Thanks for the great content! I look forward to those Varia videos and how they've addressed reliability on the VS3.

All wires were numbered and put back correctly. I thought maybe it could have had a bit of water somewhere it shouldn't have so let it dry an extra day but still no joy. Can anyone help? @WholelattelovepageКүн бұрын
Hi c, Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with with that machine so can only offer general advice for your situation. In machines with separate steam and brew boiler the steam boiler usually has a fill level probe which controls things. Those probes can go bad or have a bad connection. They typically use electrical conductivity of the water to sense water level in the boiler.

Tremendous explanation Marc - thank you! As for the static issue - and this has likely been tried - could that be remedied with a single strand of lamp wire grounding the machine to a metal table leg or similar?
@WholelattelovepageКүн бұрын
Hi D, Thanks for the comment and question. I have not tried that - maybe? A few newer grinders have an "ion generator" which claims to help control static. I've had best success controling static using RDT. For me, static is typically only a problem in low humidity conditions or in a brand new grinder with no oil coating from the beans. Some years ago when using brand new Baratza Sette grinders I always had static issues. They grind very fast with an outer burr spinning and a static inner cone. A little spritz of the beans in the hopper and a stir with finger and no more static. Marc

Can this machine be descaled at home using the instructions from your HX machine descaling video?
@WholelattelovepageКүн бұрын
Hi EP-G, Yes it is possible but the best course is to use water that will not cause scale in the first place. If you have decent tap water with no edge case issue like high gypsum content BWT filtering options will eliminate scale formation while maintaining proper mineral level for best flavor. BWT Bestsave in reservoir pad filters are easy to use: www.wholelattelove.com/products/bwt-bestsave-s-anti-scale-filter?variant=14409382723643 BWT Aqualizer Pitcher is another option: www.wholelattelove.com/products/bwt-aqualizer-2-6-l-pitcher-with-illuminated-baselight-zinc-and-magnesium-cartridge?variant=42432469172278

Hey Mark. Thanks for this video, I'm really enjoying learning about water for coffee. I just tested my water in Southern CA and found total hardness at 17 and carbonate at 7. My question is does the BestProtect produce good drinking water as well as good water for espresso? Thanks!

In the manual, there’s no description on how to descale this. It seems like a different kind of machine with the external water. Where are instructions for this?
@Wholelattelovepage2 күн бұрын
Hi d, thanks for the question. The manual covers descaling on page 20 but you are correct, there are no instructions on how to do it. Paraphrasing, the manual does say a water softener should be used when necessary. Basically meaning that if your water has a calcium content which is likely to cause scale it should be softened (calcium content reduced) prior to use to prevent scale formation. If your machine already has scale deposits the manual recommends descaling by a specialist as: "... a partial disassembly of the boiler and the tubing may be necessary to prevent the system from being blocked by lime residues. A late descaling can cause substantial damage to the machine." I do not know your water hardness so cannot tell you if it's likely to cause scale. Most who have hard water are aware they do. If not sure, I recommend contacting your water supplier. They should be able to tell you if their water is likely to cause scale. If your water has a calcium content which will cause scale the best course is to soften the water prior to use. Traditional water softeners use sodium to replace calcium in the water. Those work to prevent scale but do add some sodium to the water. We prefer water softening using calcium to magnesium ion-exchange. Magnesium is a better flavor extractor than sodium. BWT Water + More has 2 Ca to Mg products appropriate for use with the Puristika. Bestsave pad filters: www.wholelattelove.com/products/bwt-bestsave-s-anti-scale-filter?variant=14409382723643 Aqualizer Pitcher: www.wholelattelove.com/products/bwt-aqualizer-2-6-l-pitcher-with-illuminated-baselight-zinc-and-magnesium-cartridge?variant=42432469172278

@@Wholelattelovepage thx you for quick reply. i'll look into all that, but is there no instructions for descaling? given they say it's so important, but it's odd to not give instructions.
@WholelattelovepageКүн бұрын
@@dato007 You're welcome. The manufacturer's instructions are to have it descaled by a professional. That's what most all manufacturers advise due to scenarios like this: a customer has a machine with a lot of scale. They descale it and while doing so chunks of scale break off, don't fully dissolve and plug up other parts of the machine. Customer calls manufacturer and complains their machine is broken. Unhappy customer and manufacturer can't help as the root of the problem is customer using water that causes scale against manufacturer instructions. Kind of like neglecting to change the oil in a car.
@dato007Күн бұрын
@@Wholelattelovepageyea but what about just routine descaling? It seems like they inherently require to ship anytime u descale? Something isn’t adding up.
@WholelattelovepageКүн бұрын
@@dato007 ECM is clear in the manual that water should be softened so no scale forms. Follow those directions and no routine descaling will be needed. If those directions are not followed by the consumer and scaling occurs the manufacturer recommends professional service.

Nice review. What are the largest-size VST or IMS baskets that will fit in the spouted portafilters of the ECM Mechanika Slim PID machine? Is there an option for a OEM (ECM-made) bottomless portafilter? The only negative from my POV is the wide brew temp variations for the 3 settings - those variations are just too large for a lot of coffees. Very temperature-forgiving coffees would seem almost mandatory (and nice that some of those exist). This alone would be justification to spending $200 more for the next better ECM machine.

I've spent the majority of my espresso journey using doubles and while I've gotten great shots over time, whenever i wanted that classic northern italian shot, i was simply unable to achieve it with a double. For that, a single simply works best for me. I don't have an explanation for it. However, while i encountered similar issues in getting the time right, i found out theres a 3rd way to extend the shot time. Tamp multiple times. The more times you tamp, the longer the shot time is. This has been document by lance hedrick on the effect this has. It's been an absolute revelation for me. Now I do 10g in, 20g out, with 4 tamps and get it out in 25 seconds in a single basket and it's absolutely spectacular. The puck prep is also fairly simple. I use a blind shaker and just wdt very lightly the top layer so its a bit more even, then tamp 4 times with a leveled tamper. Thats it. No puck screen (speeds up shot time), no RDT, nada. Happy as can be with it now
