I have this and another JH 1670 in my collection - rouge hematite, which is a warm red ink sheening ink with gold, also beautiful. I got excited when I saw Edgar using the blue pumpkin, which isn't one I typically reach for, and thought to try it immediately on the Rhodia, HP 32, and canson cold press watercolor. I still found a lot of feathering with the blue pumpkin so prepped the next sheet with hairspray. Still, I couldn't quite get the variations that are typical with this ink.. Brings me to my question- would it be a good idea to add Arabic gum to thicken up the ink and make it better suited for pointed pen ? Thanks for your time and effort in filming this review.

I bought this ink with a set of 2 others (Rouge Hematite & Stormy Grey). Emerald of Chivor is by far my favorite ink, followed by Stormy grey in not so close second. It's so unique, but unfortunately the paper is a huge factor. Every paper used in this video was pretty good quality, even the printer paper. As he said, this isn't the normal with printer paper. You'll want laser jet paper for the ink resistance if you're going to go cheap, but Tomoe River is really where it's at. I tried Rhodia and didn't even really achieve as much as this video shows. That being said, the red is all you'll miss out on if you go with cheaper papers. There's a shading effect (light blue to dark green), a sheen effect (red), and a shimmer effect (gold specks), depending on your pen and technique you'll see all except the sheen on any paper, but wow does it pop on tomoe river, all 4 effects at once make this look almost prismatic. This whole anniversary lineup is a great match for any generously flowing pen, as you can drag out the pools with the reverse side and achieve any desired shading. Stormy gray is just as cool on cheap paper, its shimmer makes a signature look like it's worth more than it is. I'd say it's more professional looking if that's what you're going for. I love the Diamine line of shimmering inks (like Enchanted Ocean), but the J. Herbin ones definitely flow better, so if you're going to go with anything smaller than medium you won't want to risk the starting and stopping that will happen after only an hour or so of settling (at least with a Japanese extra fine).

About that ink flow. When used in a fountain pen, the gold flakes do tend to clog up your pen. I filled up a TWSBI 580AL with a well shaken ink, and naturally ran into some issues. If you allow the pen to sit for a day, you'll be greeted with an extremely dry nib next time you write. If you keep on scribbling with that for a while, the solid particles that clogged up the nib will begin to find their way on the paper. After the clear up scribbles it writes like a normal fountain pen ink, but I don't think I'll ever put this ink into a pen with an already dry nib. My pen has a wet medium nib, so it's able to deal with this ink. I had a few hard starts because of this ink, but after about a week of using it, most of the trouble making particles are gone, and now the ink is giving me no trouble at all. Perhaps next time I'll fill up the pen without first shaking the bottle.
@briang5309 ай бұрын
Never had an ink flow problem with this ink with the medium nib Momt Blanc or Broad Nib Pelikan, but have had issues with the fine nib waterman. Paper wise I have had bleed issues with staples printer paper and it's not particularly great on Moleskine notebooks. It's really good on Rhodia and Midori's notebook paper as well as the thin paper on my Traveler's Company notebook inserts (possibly also Midori paper?)

Try a Noodler’s Ahab, Konrad, Nib Creeper all two tine flex nib fountain pens. Or Noodler’s Triple Tail or Neponset three tine fountain pens. They tend to be wetter than most, but the real plus is you can fiddle with the nibs to make them wetter or drier and are very easy to take apart and clean. You can also swap out the nibs for Goulet Pens’ #6 nibs if you want a different writing experience. Goulet Pens, as well as, other popular on-line pen stores carry them. They are reasonably priced and have pretty large ink capacity.

A beautiful ink for fountain pens as well! 😍 Been wanting to get this for my pens since a long time, but I've heard that this ink is notorious for clogging the feed in fountain pens and give a hard time flushing them...
@CalligraphyMasters6 жыл бұрын
Well if you listened to what he was talking you would not it's a fountain pen ink. And clogging is probably coming from the gold in it. Thank you for watching & #KeepWriting
@TheHardcoreDilettante6 жыл бұрын
@@CalligraphyMasters It IS a fountain pen ink. It's sold as a fountain pen ink, and it works as such. It's not nearly as viscous as ink intended for dip pens, and it's entirely water soluble.
@TheHardcoreDilettante6 жыл бұрын
It's not that bad. It IS made for fountain pens. I wouldn't use it in any pens that are hard to flush thoroughly. So no vintage pens with sacs, not because this ink will damage them, but because it's a PITA to clean out of them and will take forever, not just because of the shimmer particles but because it's heavily saturated. And no pens that have a drier flow because the particles can interfere with flow in that case. But if the pen is constructed so that it's easy to flush, and the feed gives you a nice, wet flow, it's fine to use this ink. I put it in my TWSBI with no problems. I use it in any modern cartridge/converter fountain pen with decently wet flow without fear. I just don't let it dry out in the pen and make sure to use the pen regularly or clean it out if I don't plan to use the pen at least a little bit daily. Once again, not because the ink will damage the pen if it dries out, but because it's so saturated that cleaning it completely is a huge pain if it gets dried out.
@MadebyEdgar6 жыл бұрын
The Hardcore Dilettante You are 100% correct. I couldn’t have put it any better. It does become a bit difficult with a fountain pen but I heard dipping it in water every know than should work. But I never used it with a fountain so I don’t really have a good answer. Thank you for your insight.

Watercolour paper is sized (usually with gelatine) to make it absorb liquid slower to allow the watercolour artist time to paint and create their desired affects. That's why your ink dried slower on it.
@awatercolourist3 жыл бұрын
Also, if the watercolour paper is made of cotton it will hold water for a longer time. Retaining water is a prerequisite for many watercolouring techniques and is the reason why most watercolourists use it.

Edgar, thank you so much for taking the time to respond. Wow, I’m remembering using Fabriano Roma, which has tons of tooth, and how much it tired out my hand. I commend you on using rough and cold press papers - I know it’s not as easy as using smooth, hot press papers. I sure can’t argue with your results, but it made my jaw drop just the same. I love the LOOK of rough papers, though, even if I find them too challenging to work on. I can imagine that your Blue Pumpkin works a lot better than a Leonardt Principal or a wee #EF 66 Arrow on those rough papers. I applaud you, Edgar! Much respect. Hi Mr Edgar, first of all, thank you very much for the comprehensive review of the ink. You have inspired me to purchase the ink last week. However, I have encountered a problem here. Using a Pilot Parallel 6mm nib, I tried writing on the Rhodia Dotpad 80g/m and also the Tomoe River 68g/m - The green ink and gold shimmer are outstanding, but the red sheen has never appeared at all no matter how much I dip or flood the nib. Is there anything that I am doing wrongly? Or is there other alternative paper you will recommend? Looking forward to hear from the masters! Thanks in advance!
@gertahnstrom7845 жыл бұрын
My guess is that the red parts appear where there is a very thin layer of ink applied, so that it dries faster. The Pilot Parallel gives a consistent wet line, so the gold and teal would be spread out quite evenly. Try experimenting with light pressure and faster strokes and see what happens.
