I saw them live twice and both times were memorable. The first time was during the Timothy's Monster tour, I never head their music before, I only knew they were supposed to be very good. The show started with what I believe was their single, A Shrug and a Fistful, some sort of indie rocker, after that, they went into hyperdrive and the show became a hypnotic maelstrom of heavy guitar and bass, where one song merged into the next, sort of like listening to their song The Wheel for an hour, only heavier. One of my favorite concert ever. The second time was an open air concert in Torino, that night the city was hit by a record setting lightning storm. It didn't rain but every few seconds there was a flash of lightning, best lightshow ever, although a little scary with all that electric equipment on stage. Motorpsycho are a really talented band that, throughout their career, touched all kinds of rock music. From the heavy grungy/stoner beginnings with Lobotomizer and the awesome Demon Box, to country rock with The Tussler, jazz rock with their collaboration with Jaga Jazzist Horns, indie rock with Timothy's Monster to the blend of hard rock, 60's psychedelia and prog, of the majority of their offerings of the last two decades, you can hear influences from this or that band in their music, but you can always tell when you are listening to Motorpsycho.

I saw from your SOT review of The Tower that it was the first album you heard -- great place to start, a contender for their alltime best, along with The Death Defying Unicorn and the most recent Kingdom of Oblivion. Would love to see you do a rundown of your faves from the catalog, but understandably that's a pretty massive task of over 50 hours of music!

With The tower and The Crucible Motorpsycho entered their prog renaissance and continued it on the new album The all is one, the band delivers powerful prog sounds with brilliant guitar, bass and beautiful keyboards mostly mellotron. The album kicks off with a self titled track that bursts with power and fantastic mellotron parts. N.O.X.', a 42-minute epic shows that this band is at the top of their game. The all is one has it all from hard and heavy to beautifully written acoustic and classical parts. Third and final chapter in the "Gullvåg" trilogy is a must have If you like mix of eclectic, symphonyc, heavy, space and psych with really interesting lyrics focusing on moral, political and other issues we face today.

My favorite Motorpsycho albums are first and foremost the amazing The Death Defying Unicorn. Its an incredible 2 CD release. This is followed very closely by Heavy Metal Fruit, Here Be Monsters, Behind the Sun and Still Life with Eggplant. So yeah, I'm mostly enamored with their stuff of the last 10 or so years. Their very early stuff - basically all their 90s output - is meh. Their last couple - especially The Tower and The Crucible are also both quite stellar. All told an awesome band...since the 21st century anyhow...

The Death Defying Unicorn will be very hard for this band to top but ill take another 16 albums of coming close. This band deserves to be huge worldwide but we all know why they won't. That's ok because they have an extremely loyal fanbase.

An innovative band, i don't hear a Yes influence, mostly a bit of Camel from the seventies and some loops near of Pink Floyd psychedelic era.

Light Fantastic - a compilation of outtakes I believe - is also superb. Only on vinyl or download (please release a CD edition, box set!). Gotta be one of the most exciting , interesting, 'complete' bands in the world at the moment. Last 4 albums (I haven't listened to all the discography - it's deep - yet). Quality-wise, for me, Motorpsycho for me are very close to Rush, Genesis and Yes status. A breath of fresh air in these rotten times. I hope they don't decide to change their style now but even improve on what they already have. A remarkable band. Good point about the Nox split Pete - hard to fathom really considering they've got space on one CD - probably a ton of excellent outtakes as well.

Sæther pronounces 'setter'. The Y in Ryan like in 'mystery'. Enough of this lecture - Motorspsycho always delivers. You should have seen the norwegian music scene in the 70's. A few honerable exceptions, but mostly home grown singers performing foreign hits in norwegian, cover bands and accordion players. And we had only one TV channel and one radio channel....routing for the accordion players most of the time. Boring beyond imagination. Maybe that's why things are happening in such a great scale these days? Our badass talents suddenly floted to the surface? Makes sense. Thank yo as always for a fine presentation. Stay safe.

Yes, Norway was/is loaded with absolutely classic bands. Personal favorites (besides the great Motorpsycho) include, but aren't limited to Wobbler , Elephant9, Aunt Mary, Tusmørke, Smell of Incense, Tangle Edge, Annot Rhul (have to be in the right mood), Arabs in Aspic, Gargamel, good ol' Fruitcake, Jordsjø, Titanic, Lucifer Was and Seid... And though I currently don't own any I do like some Magic Pie, Høst, Ruphus and The Opium Cartel...
