I’d just like to say that I bought a watch from you maybe 4 years ago. The after sales service you provided on a sub £200 watch went beyond what id expect from a £20,000 transaction. I won’t go into specifics because I wouldn’t want others to expect the support you gave me but honestly it’s the best service I’ve ever had anywhere for anything. I urge everyone and anyone to buy from this guy.

I have the white dial with silver (SBDC089), it’s fantastic. Rock solid, lovely looking, and a highly accurate movement with 70hr power reserve. Been very impressed so far. I had a Sarb017 for about a year but sold it, I much prefer this version. The movement is better and the colouring is better looking and more versatile. The case is identical so it wears exactly the same as the Sarb version.

Well everything is an opinion. For me the sapphire, display back, better movement and better strap is a whole level better then the previous Alpinist. This watch is quite beautiful up close. The finishing looks better then the previous version. Its worth a higher price and generally, as with the new Sumo, Seiko is making its models higher quality, whilst still keeping the lower range, like the 5.

Who needs lume on the compass? You need to have Sun visible in order to find your direction, that is not a magnetic compass. It is useless at night. You don't even need compass markers to be able to tell directions, in the first place, because you can do that with every watch, using only hour hand and 12 o'clock marker. But, ok. I like the design.

@@islandwatch I'm one of your regular viewers, and it's definitely not backwards to me. I get that it's uncommon, and ultimately subjective. I'm simply trying to provide an additional perspective, as a complement to your video. I'm certain you know far more about watches than me, but there are always perspectives that even experts haven't considered. A lot of reviewers seem quick to dismiss this configuration as Seiko putting it on backwards, simply because they aren't used to it. However, I believe a lot more thought has gone into choosing to put the strap on this way. From my experience, it is a lot easier to guide the strap through the keepers, especially for people who aren't used to deployment clasps. Perhaps it's something you can consider, and maybe even mention in the future should you find it to be true. Either way, love your content. Cheers!

I agree the Seiko Prospex 2020 'Alpinist' SBDC091 / SPB121 continues to be a great looking time piece. The classic gold numbers and hands on the green dial just work so well together. Is this the same green as the SARB017? It looks close. I really liked the SARB017 green. I would prefer that the strap be smooth like either the SBDC089 or SBDC093 but retain the same brown color. I have never liked the compass ring. It is just an unnecessary addition that really doesn't serve any useful purpose that couldn't be achieved in other ways. It's only a fancy Boy Scout trick for aligning North to the Sun. The knob for the compass is an unnecessary perforation of the case, requiring a good seal and potentially affecting water resistance. The knob is easily bumped, allowing the compass ring to be knocked out of alignment anyway. (This is why you never see the compass oriented the same way twice in any of the images or video shots.) The compass degree increments are very small to read and there's no luminescence on them because it only works usefully during daylight hours. The tick marks on the compass ring could induce confusion because they are differently calibrated (spaced) from the clock tick marks. A better use of the outer ring would be to make the lume larger and maybe continue the minute tick marks up the side. Removing the compass would reduce manufacturing coasts, reduce weight slightly, reduce potential water ingress and simplify a too busy but an otherwise very attractive watch. The money saved could be used to improve the often disparaged strap quality or maybe add a GMT function like on the Seiko SBGE033 and/or add a power indicator, or even to lower the price. The lume pips are all the same small pip and it is hard to orient the 12 position without a distinguishing mark of some kind (especially on the black dial, no numerals, SBDC087 / SPB117J1.) Even the three o'clock position is lummed, so it can't be an orienting reference. As an older consumer with diminished eyesight, I'm very impressed with the strong cyclops diopter and the ease with which the date can be read casually without having to pull out the reading glasses. It's nice to have the cyclops on the inside surface rather than on the outside like the Seiko Mini Turtle. Also, glare is only reduced partially via an AR coating on the inside (backside) of the sapphire crystal (and cyclops). You still have to deal with first surface reflections off the front surface of the crystal. With my larger 7-7/8" wrists, I like the wider, almost 40mm width (39.4 mm width according to Seiko specs - Mark states it at 38mm.) At 13.2mm it's thicker than the 12mm of the SARB017; maybe due to new display caseback. I prefer the thinner profile if I could get it. The display caseback (Hardlex?) is unnecessary, but I can live with it. This is a 3 Hz (21,600BPH) movement. Six tick marks per second (fine scale) and one tick mark per minute (intermediate scale) is a welcome improvement (and makes infinitely more sense) on the dial in regards to time keeping. The second hand should skip every other tick mark and the minute hand should register one tick mark every 10 seconds on the fine calibrations. (The SARB017 has 5 tick marks/sec. which doesn't really make sense for either a 3HZ or 4Hz timing, nor does it work for the compass; 25 tick marks for 30 degrees of azimuth.) What has changed for the better is now each tick mark equals one degree on the compass (30 tick marks / 30 degrees of azimuth.) But who needs such precision on a compass that is easily bumped out of alignment, and so hard to read and align with topography anyway? I wish Mark would just set the watch down for a few moments and zoom in so we can count the ticks per second and examine the details closely without him fidgeting with the watch to the point of distraction. Seiko chapter rings have been known to be misaligned. It would be nice to see if all 3 hands are aligned dead nuts on the 12 o'clock position. Isn't this, after all, the reason for having hacking as a feature? You can set the second hand to the 12 position, align the minute hand on the proper tick mark and then click the start function when your calibrating clock reaches top dead center (so to speak). That way, your minute hand is not half way between tick marks when the second is at top dead center at the 12 o'clock position. (With a +25sec -15sec accuracy, and some complain of worse, maybe this is deemed irrelevant?) I'm okay with the SPX logo on the dial, but it would be better without it. This is an "Alpinist inspired" watch in the Prospex line-up, not a true revision of the original Alpinist. I would make sure there is adequate contrast on the dials for ease of reading. (Again, diminishing eyesight but money to $pend.) Silver numerals on white dial is difficult and red typography on black dial is also difficult. Think red SUN on black background, seen on many day complications. Very difficult to read.) The price hike is a reflection of the reality of the current state of affairs in the global economy (like the Rolex price hikes). The currency in Japan has been losing value for 30 years, so their costs are rising faster than the exchange rates. With all the national debt and central bank money printing, all currencies are losing value (relative to gold say.) A significant inflation will soon rear it's ugly head (even for the strong US$) and these prices will all seem very reasonable in a few years. The Alpinist claim to fame was it's very low price originally. The attractive dial helped for sure, but now that the prices have risen, the value proposition has faded considerably. I might consider this watch if they got rid of the compass, added a hard AR to the front surface (so both surfaces are AR coated), reduce the thickness back to 12mm, and maybe provide a better strap. The design style is awesome but the value proposition has been lost. It's now too pricey for it's intended use. I think my Hamilton Kaki King will be my new hiking/mountaineering watch. ------------------------ If Seiko were to reissue the SARB017 Alpinist, I would like to see the following mods: SARB017 Alpinist branding on dial front, get rid of -Diashock 23 Jewels-. Original Alpinist branding (Seiko Mountain or Mt. Fuji?) on the solid case back, which might help to reduce width back to 12mm. Get rid of the compass, thus saving manufacturing costs and reducing water ingress, extra stem, and maybe reducing overall width from 13mm to less than 12mm. The gradations on the perimeter of the face dial should be three fine tick marks per second (or maybe even none) on the outer scale to match the 3Hz beat rate. One tick mark per minute on the intermediate scale with the usual heavy markings at the hour positions and also more lume at the hour gradations. If the compass is retained, each tick mark would be equal to two degrees of azimuth. (Hamilton Jazzmaster used to have a 4Hz movement and the tick marks were 4/sec. Hamilton reduced the beats to 3Hz but never changed the dial markings to 3/sec. On the Kaki King the tick marks are 5/sec with a beat rate of 3Hz. This seams to be most common in the industry. Once you're aware of it, you can not, "not" see it when looking at watch specs and dials.) Keep the 'syringe' tips of each hand as they are, (seconds, minutes, hours) to reach each respective diameter of the corresponding gradation rings as they are on the SARB017. The hands themselves are just fine and need no revision; they are so vitally integral to the styling that is very attractive. Maybe add a GMT function like on Seiko SBGE033 and/or add a power indicator. Thanks for the review and to all the commenters. I'm learning a lot. ...

Mark, is the new green dial *exactly* the same hue/texture/sunburst as the now-classic SARB model? (presumably it comes from a new production line, if the diameter is slightly different) I'd love a macro comparison under the same lighting...

@Zachary Suchanek I agree Zach, the diopter magnification is too high. Looks to be about 2x. My Rolex has a 1.5 and seems more proportional since the watch case is about the same diameter. I have the 017 without it and it looks much nicer. Plus they didn't frame the date window either which points your attention to that.

The SARB 017 has it's own part number too. I have one on my 017 and I love it. Much better than the original Seiko bracelet.

Hey Mark, so I'm new to the hobby. I've noticed seiko has a huge following and so does the Alp. I just bought the black dial off the seiko website. I know this model came out this year, but how long will seiko have it on their website? Does seiko normally keep their watches for sale for many years before they stop selling them or will they be discontinued and on to the next variant by the next year?

If the screw to release & close main crown adds water resistance, why would the non-threaded crown tube for the rotating compass NOT compromise or reduce the water intrusion resistance? Is there a watch anywhere with only a push & pull crown which DOES receive a 200m rating? Seiko knows about water resistance as well as any dive watch maker (evidence: Sumo, Turtle, Marine Master, Monster, etc.) and I doubt they would assign a 200m rating casually. How is the movement protected from moisture leaking in through the compass crown?

Great video as per usual, Marc. A few things: - When I saw a preview of the new Alpinist elsewhere, I could swear it had double-indices at 12 o'clock; some people have complained that having just one can be disorienting in the dark, to which I always say "while it's on your wrist?" Whatever. - I do recall the 70-hour PR of the 6R35, but I thought it was also a higher-beat movement as well. I know, hard to ask for both at this price point. The Green One: Pretty, but...(grabs Alpinist he bought from you two years back)...it certainly *doesnt* have the same iridescent finish of the original. Not saying that's necessarily good or bad, but I do like the look of the original. - Cyclops: If there's anything the new ones have that I wish my original had, it's this. Wonder if that crystal could be retrofitted to the original?

It always puzzles me too when someone reviews a watch and says the lume is weak and is disorienting in the dark. Really? A: The watch stem is always to the right and B: it never left your wrist. Even if you take it off and put it on a night stand, the stem is still on the right. Did I miss something?
