Totally reminds me of the Mercator I forget who makes that one). I've never had bad etching like that on any of my Sanrenmu pieces, which is surprising. I agree, scissors are very useful! Thanks for sharing, Jake.

Yes, the Mercator has the same basic type of construction. Many knives that came out when the first Mercator hit the shelves were made in the same way in a number of countries all over Europe, and probably in North America too but I don't know of models from this side of the Atlantic. It's a very economical way to make a knife, so it makes sense that there are a number of knives using the same basic construction.

Hi Jake, yeeehaw - finally again a knife for me... *lol It´s available in Germany under "Böker Plus (Atlas)" in different versions. With Scissors about 29.xx €, with Brass handle without scissors 32 €... crazy world. The dollar conversion at this time would make a price under 20 €... Will figure out, where to purchase, but once again a nice EDC for my fifth pocket... Thanks so much for this review! All the best to you!!

The Boker and THIS PT711 are both made by the Sanrenmu factory in China, and they are made in the same style as the larger Otter Messer Mercator which is made in Germany.

When I saw this knife it reminded me of the K55K model from Mercator, but the German knife has a lockback system. The K55K is one of my favourite folders ever, lightweight, robust, and useful for a reasonable price. On this type of knifes I feel that clips are not a priority. Anyway this Sanrenmu seems to be a good option.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there were MANY knives that were made with this style of construction back in the day, and the Mercator is one that is still going strong but there are a few others that have stayed in production over the many decades. It's a tried and true way to make a decent knife. I agree, that clips are not a priority but I do like that the option is there.

@@CanadianCuttingEdge True, I remember the Cognet Écureuil (squirrel), a traditional French knife made a in the same way, the Douk-Douk also. Both of them are good knives. About clips I am not a huge fan except when we have the possibility to reverse the position for left handed people, just because I am left handed (so my opinion is biased). Thanks for your answer, blessings from South France.

You should have got one of the Böker Plus Atlas versions, Jake - those have satin finish blades. And amen to no bottle opener - I also don't need yet another friggin' bottle opener on every single knife and tool I own!

@@CanadianCuttingEdge I haven't seen a lot of Sanrenmu knives on sale in the UK, but if they are offering the same products as Boker, then maybe they're more for the North American market, like Mac Tools for the US and Facom for Europe, which also sell a lot of identical products.

5:52 Why would they throw out a perfectly functional thing? Give it half-price, I would gladly buy it. It's a user, not a safe queen for me. Yesterday I handled a Böker version on a local meeting of our knife forum. It is a very handly little knife for a bare minimalist EDC (hot summer, hot climate, or anyway). I like it.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge Жыл бұрын
I didn't suggest that they throw it out. Many companies sell products with cosmetic issues at a lower price, and I agree it would be nice is all companies did that. I agree, it's a very useful little knife that works well even in the pocket of some thin summer shorts on a hot day.

It's interesting, I have both versions, the knife blade on my scissors version is hollow ground whereas the single blade version is full flat ground.. Sanrenmu do seem to do this sometimes - my 7010 is flat ground whereas some older ones (maybe 710?) seem to be hollow ground (which I would prefer). By the way how is pricing on SAKs in Canada? They are such good value and quality. Some models tend to get discounted further here in the UK, for example I recently got the Super Tinker for £21, which is better value than even most Chinese knives/multitools. The scissors on SAK pen knives are far and away the best in the business.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, they have played with the grind on some of the knives, especially those that have been in production for a lot of years. EDC Scissors are highly underrated, maybe especially since some companies don't do a great job on the ones they include in their multi-function knives.

my sanrenmu partner the blade started to come loose. unfortunately I couldn't find any tools to tighten it up again, in the end I managed with a fork. the pocket clip is the worst I've ever had and basically unusable if you don't want a damaged pocket. other than that it's a good knife.

I am very curious how you used a fork to make the blade tighter. I probably would have peened the pivot pin a bit with a little peening hammer.

@@CanadianCuttingEdge I found a fork where the teeth fit into the holes. Then I adjusted the distance between the teeth so that they match the holes. I gripped the fork as low as possible and turned. this went much better than I expected.

For the $30 to $40 of rather have the Otter-Messer Mercator K55K slipjoint. However, the scissor version is very appealing for a more practical user who wants to appear traditional.

The Mercator comes in at least two sizes, perhaps the small one is close to the same size. I do prefer the 12C27 over the stainless steel used in the Mercator knives, so I think I would still go with the Sanrenmu, but its a very close race.

What are the knife laws in Canada? No locking? Blade length?
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 2 жыл бұрын
Knife laws in Canada are quite fuzzy. It's the nature of our legal system. There is almost nothing about length in the knife laws, except as it pertains to blades that are hidden inside other objects like cane knivea or umbrella knives. As far as locking in concerned there is nothing either. BUT there are rules about how a blade can be deployed. no gravity knives allowed, and no "centrifugal" knives allowed. This last one is where the interpretation of what that means is where the risk is. The border security people say almost any locking folder is a centrifugal knife, so that makes it tricky to import pocket knives. In terms of what we can carry. it is exceedingly rare for a police officer to care about any knive a person has unless they are doing something dangerous or illegal with it. BUT, technically they could make trouble for anyone who has a locking folder which has a nice smooth deploying knife like a flipper for example. We have other knife laws, like no T handle fixed blades, they call those push daggers. And no knives that are concealed inside other small things like belt buckle daggers or credit card knives. Finally , I am not a law expert, there could be other knife laws.
