I am using it. Fantastic daughter board with compact size. It is defenitely new alternative to conventional LA MIDI modules to ones who want simplest without external MIDI gear and cables messed in particular.

Surely Dune 2 is the gold standard for MT 32 testing. It uses all of the on-board memory for new samples, adds new instruments etc. It was written for that synth and then 'ported' to other devices :) It has a distincitve sound due to the custom midi instruments. The other versions lack all the custom instruments and use approximations and do not sound as good.

Excellent review. I bought one with the panel connection, which I think is a must if you're switching between MT-32 and General Midi modes frequently. I have a Roland LAPC-I and I can't hear any difference to my ears to it and the McCake.

You can do pretty well with mt32-pi-control and a couple batch files, I do it because I don't like seeing an obviously modern panel on my 486. Using the custom message function you can even send a test note to verify that settings were changed succesfully. For me it's easy enough to tell the difference between GM and MT-32 on channel 1, and for CM-32L I play a sound effect instead.

Most Sound Blaster 16 cards, but also a lots of other cards. Google is your friend.
