A look at an interesting thread that recently came to my attention.
It's round, it's strong, its cheap, whats not to like.
Have a look, see what you think.
An interesting update…
We have just heard back from Vinymo and they put their sizes as follows:
Size 1: .8mm
Size 5: .6mm
Size 8: .4mm
I agree with the Size 8 being 0.4mm but think they are generous on the other two.
What I have here is closer to:
Size 1: .6mm
Size 5: .5mm
Size 8: .4mm
It is possible that they are measuring prior to spooling and given the stretch of the thread, I get a different reading off the spool.
I have put it all through the Vernier and am happy with the measurements of the thread I have here.
These measurements are consistent across the colours I have.
You can see for yourself in the video what it looks like, you have a choice of small medium and large, I think that should cover the inconsistencies.
Just be wary, the size may differ slightly dependant on tension at time of spooling.

This seller(english site in japan) sells Vinymo thread and many things better price than goods japan. Goods japan is ok for one item(shipping included). but for multiple items. goods japan is expensive and he ships with horse mail. Thread sizes of Vinymo given by this seller is :leathercrafttools.com/search?search_cate_a_id=&search_keyword=vinymo

I like this thread, but for me the biggest issue is that as a twisted vs braided thread, it does tend to twist while stitching, which can lead to challenging knots if you're not watching for it.

I enjoy watching your vids and have learned a great deal from them. I have a question, could you do a vedio on finishing off your stitches? Mine dont look very good , they look bulky or heavy. especially when using the slanted pricking irons, thanks for your time.

I have tiger, lin cable and many other threads. Probably spend more than 200$. Now I only use Vinymo(bought from Japan and much cheaper with shipping than free shipping in the USA). Tiger thread for thick leather is ok, but for beauty vinmyo is much better and Japanese colors are the brightest. Tiger and lin cable -colors are not bright at all. This US made thread is round and good too. jandsthreadsupply.com/shop?olsPage=products

Nigel, your US viewers can get the Ritza Tiger Thread from Amazon. I've posted a link below to that and other items I'll mention. To my surprise, GoodsJapan does not carry either the Tiger or the Vinymo thread. However, in addition to Vinymo itself, which is a Korean company, I've found two sources of the Vinymo MBT thread. They are : * Monotaro, and * Best From Japan. Monotaro is in Singapore. The prices look reasonable enough. And they provide free shipping on orders over 200 SPG (Singapore dollars.) I'll link to an online exchange service (X-Rates) so that you can check the prices in any currency you wish to. Best From Japan also has what appear to be reasonable prices. While they do not have a free shipping option, they do offer several shipping methods, at least one of which will get the thread to you in about a week. They also provide instructions for how calculate the shipping without actually placing an order. Vinymo's site is in Korean. While Google Translate might give you the gist of what the site says, as I know from using it to translate German to English and vice versa, it is FAR from perfect. So, be VERY careful if you use it. If you communicate with them, try to do so in English. I don't know if it will work. But it would be worth trying. Since it is the least useful link, I'll put it at the end of the post. Tiger thread is from Germany, so not surprised the Japanese company doesn't carry it.

If you are in USA or Canada, cheapest tiger thread I found that sells by this guy in etsy, little cheaper from his own site. called egyptian leather, based in Washington state. But if you buy from etsy, etsy charge washington state charge. better buy directly from website.check the price. www.etsy.com/ca/shop/EgyptianLeather?ref=l2-shopheader-name

I like how the thread looks and feels when I stitch, but god damn the thread keeps going undone on my needles, since its a more round thread than lets say ritza, which is flat.... It is harder to get the needle through the live end and when i do, its so thin that it will eventually get undone...

I’m looking at this thread and this is what I’m afraid of too since it’s not waxed. I don’t know how Nigel managed to keep the thread on the needles without slipping. I tried other bonded non waxed thread and after a few stitches the thread slips off of the needles. Nevertheless I bought the color chart. Did you ever manage to make it work for you?
@danieljerloew

@@luceafarul579 if it shall work, ill coat it in wax. i like ritza better i must admit, cause when i push the needle into the live end, and make nuts its much more forgiving, and it glides nice. That said, i did use this thread on a couple projects, since i ordered it in different colors.

@@danieljerloew thanks! I will try it. I’ve tried Mesi Xiange polyester thread other than Ritza. And really it can only hold up to about 15” of 4-5mm stitched before the thread starts to become thin on the needle butt due to the abrasion and starts to come off. Ritza definitely is more sturdy from this perspective and yes it glides very nicely. But it’s too bad Ritza doesn’t make round threads in thinner diameter. I make lady’s bags and usually we don’t want the threads on the bag to be so conspicuous which flat threads tend to do, because it won’t look good. also always having to watch the thread to keep the stitches flat is such a pain.
