Ive had problems with 2 new WR v3 planes…chip breaker and blade not flat. I returned one (it had other problems) and now have a solution for the other. Excellent video! Thanks for posting.

The Luban Quingshing (I have seen this spelt a number of ways) factory also make a number of planes under different names for. different retailers. I believe they manufacture for Wood River, Melbourne Tool Company and Axminster's home brand. Some of these are nudging the bottom end of the premium plane market. Whilst many Chinese manufacturers compete solely on price Luban seems to be inching closer and closer to premium. One of the advantages that Chinese manufacturers have is their not entirely driven by quarterly reports and this can and do make plans for 25 years time.

Interesting, i didnt know they manufactured so many different planes

@@AussieWoodshed More than I have listed. I have no idea what the minimum order is but if you want to introduce Aussie Woodshed planes you can have your logo and if you supplied the wood Jarrah totes and knobs.

I have an Axminster-Rider #5. Out of the box and with very minimal fettling, it performed wonderfully - BUT...I soon found that the lack of kidney bean setup is a major issue with that plane. More-so (far more) than on any other such plane that I have without that kidney bean feature. It has got to the point where I don't want to reach for it anymore and regret buying it (at a not-so-cheap price). When retracting the iron, that lever cap slides up like it's on ice. My only solution is to set it up for one cut and try to never retract it, which is absurd. Total garbage and waste of money - but it's marketed as a 'premium' plane. Premium it could and should be but is definitely not...!

@@PeteLewisWoodwork Can I suggest a fix? Next time you see a really thrashed 4 or 5 for sale cheap buy t. The buy a tap for the bolt. Tap the bolt into the Axminster frog. Now you can use a kidney bean lever cap.

For the price point, Luban tools are very good... Infact, better than new Stanley tools. I have a few Luban Shoulder planes and they are very well made. The blades do need sharpening more often than higher pricepoint blades but I don't find that to be a deal breaker.

Hey Luke, thanks for the video. I have a question: do you think it's worth getting only the chip breaker with an old stanley blade? I'm thinking that the thinner stanley blades are less time-consuming to sharpen, and the thicker chip breaker will help with vibration and better shaving. And it will be cheaper that way. Please let me know what you think. Cheers mate

From what I've seen if you have a hand-plane with a wide mouth such as a new stanley bailey hand-plane, the thicker chip breaker does help to reduce some of the vibration in the blade. I haven't seen the same vibration problem with the thin blades in vintage planes with a tighter mouth, i think its because with the wider mouth the cutting edge and the wood fibers are less supported. So the thicker chip breaker does help to reduce some ridging when hand-planing as there is less vibration in the cut, i noticed this most in soft woods. My next video i talk about this topic in regards to the new stanley bailey hand plane. Hope this helps

@Aussie Woodshed thanks for the reply, Luke. I think i will give it a go with one of those veritas/Hock/Luban (whatever i can find here in South Africa) chip breakers as I have a pre-WW stanley. Type 15 I think. Looking forward to the next video. Cheers

They seem like a good replacement option. Instead of setting up, it should be called 'lubing the Luban'

Yeah, it was better than i was expecting. Definitely a decent option

I did not see you create a micro bevel on chip breaker. Usualy is 30 degree. Its not important create this new bevel? I am beginner and sometimes i feel confused with many different informations
@AussieWoodshed11 ай бұрын
There is no need to change the angle on the chip breaker, just keep the angle the way it is from the shop and remove the milling marks on the top, and create the slight undercut and check for flat on the bottom of the chip breaker so it can fit to the flat back of the blade. Micro bevels are only necessary on the plane blade if you choose to use a micro bevel, which I don't use. I kept this video simple for the blade i usually grind a 30 degree bevel and sharpen at that same 30 degrees, and instead of a camber i just roll the corners. This video show how i prepare the vintage style chip breaker kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6OTqamBatGVq5I This video i go through the whole sharpening process of a plane blade kzbin.info/www/bejne/q33TfZh6o9eofNU Hope this helps, if you have any other questions please ask and i will try and help. My aim is to make sharpening as basic and easy as it can be
