PXW-X70 Firmware V2.0 Upgrade includes chargeable element and will be available June 2015 New Features & Improvements: Support for 4K (QFHD) Recording (optional) This 4K recording update provides support for QFHD shooting at 30p/25p/24p, allowing the X70 to capture scenes with stunning quality and at high resolution*. Furthermore, for projects finalized in HD, 4K recording greatly expands the creative possibilities by enabling digital panning, camera-shake correction and other post-production effects. NOTE: 4K recording requires purchase of the 4K Upgrade License (CBKZ-X70FX). Format Resolution Wrap Quality Frame Rate Bit Rate XAVC-L 3840x 2160 MXF 4:2:08bit 29.97p 60Mbps 23.98p 60Mbps 25p 60Mbps*We are looking to support a higher bit-rate recording mode than 60 Mbps for 3840x2160 XAVC-L in the future. Proxy Recording Proxy recording supports the use of a low-bit-rate video file in place of an XAVC-format, high-bit-rate file with the same timecode. The low-bit-rate proxy file, being smaller in size, can be used in many ways to increase efficiency. For example, the smaller file can be more easily transmitted to remote locations, while editing is greatly facilitated by the use of the smaller file, which is replaced at the completion of editing with the high-bit-rate file). FTP Transfer This feature supports FTP file transfers on the PXW-X70, allowing content files recorded with the XAVC Proxy Recording feature, and other content files shot in XAVC (4K/HD) and AVCHD formats, to be sent via the Internet for remote storage on an FTP server). Streaming This feature allows images to be streamed live from the PXW-X70 for viewing at a remote location. Data transfer rate, specified by two image quality menu settings (9Mbps and 3Mbps), can be selected to suit the network environment being used. Wired LAN Connection When wireless LAN is unavailable, this feature allows the PXW-X70 to be connected to the Internet over a wired connection via separately available USB adapter cable VMC-UAM2 and Network adaptor CBK-NA1R which is included in CBK-NA1 Network Adaptor Kit, allowing files to be streamed or transferred by FTP. 4K Upgrade License “CBKZ-X70FX” CBKZ-X70FX Upgrade License enables 4K recording on PXW-X70. Please note CBKZ-X70FX is an optional item that will be available for purchase soon. Firmware version 2.0 is also required for use of the Upgrade License. PXW-X70 V2.0 Firmware will be downloadable in June 2015

Sir, I have sony PXW-X70 and i have some technical issue. While working with XAVCS codec 50Mbit, camera shows an error message "NUMBER OF MOVIE SCENES IS FULL.CANNOT RECORD IN THE SELECTED FILE FORMAT" when the momory still free about 20 GB. I'm using sandisk 64GB 95M/bps card please guide me what exactly the problem is?

You can only have a certain number of clips on a card even if the card has space available. This is described in the instruction manual.

Great review! I've had my eye on this model for a few months now. It's a pity Sony didn't carry-over the weatherproofing features of the HXR-NX70, but the PXW-X70 is clearly an improvement in every other regard.

It is a good cam. Trying to operate any camcorder with a rain cover on it is very awkward, I find! I only know of one Sony pro compact camcorder that was rain proof and that was the NX70 (now discontinued)

Hi David; i got a question for you: i'd like to buy this little beast...but overall for wedding video; do you think that may be a good deal for me? I'm scared about the focus...i like play with DOF (i'm started recording with DSLR...) but you blame the bad control of focus...what you suggest? Thanks in advance, Leandro
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 10 жыл бұрын
L2 Studio Yeah the focus on this cam - when it's zoomed in - does require lots and lots of twisting the ring, so I can imagine that if you were handheld during a wedding, you might end up wobbling the image a bit. But having said that, things move relatively slowly in a wedding, you know where the parties are going to be and as soon as you've set focus, they won't move that fast so as you couldn't track them. It's only a lot of ring-twisting if you go from one focus extreme to another, which wouldn't happen often (unless you were trying to do pretty rack-focus effects I suppose) Also, there's an efficient auto focus (better than on the CX900 in my tests) which you can use as a quick "push to focus" then release back to manual if you need to.

Is rendering on Sony Vegas PRO better than Premier Pro? Or is it just the same quality? Thanks for the response.
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 10 жыл бұрын
Mexlycan Filmico I've never put them head to head but it would depend on the codec I suspect. A lot of programs use encoding software from MainConcept so you could expect the rendering from those to be largely the same. I upload using Sony's own mp4 / AVC codec simply because it's faster to encode than the MainConcept version and to most intents and purposes you can't see the difference once it's gone through KZbin's own encoding after that. Equally, many people like to encode out of Vegas to a standalone program like Handbrake and they swear by that method, which could be better than native encoding in another application.

Hello, You mention the auto manual switch on the back above the ND switch. Are you sure this is for auto/manual exposure or is it auto/manual ND filter selection? The manual seems to contradict what the video said.
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 8 жыл бұрын
I am quite sure and the manual for the UK model, page 39, concurs. The auto/manual switch is for exposure. Don't get it confused with the auto/manual switch on the similar but different AX100 model which purely switches auto ND in or not (and even then only ND1).
@andymartin86
@andymartin86 8 жыл бұрын
+UKAirscape Hello. Thanks for the response. Yes I have the AX100 and can't believe theyve implemented this switch differently between models! It makes sense for it to be an exposure mode switch as the program AE behind the screen as a 'full auto' is randomly named and placed! I should have bought the professional model!
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 8 жыл бұрын
I hate to tell you but yes, you should ;-) I reviewed the CX900 on this channel which is identical to the AX100 except it's HD only and I noted the peculiarity of the auto/man control being devoted to ND there. The X70 is simply a much better, more competent camcorder, everything the CX900 and AX100 should have been!
@andymartin86
@andymartin86 8 жыл бұрын
I'm looking to get one of these now! The 4K the AX100 is a gimmick at the moment as most TV's are still HD. Plus the file sizes are massive. I'm just struggling to find one in the UK at a reasonable price!

I wonder how this camera will compare to JVC's GY-HM200. Sony has a bigger sensor, but the JVC seems to have easier control with more buttons and rings. Plus I've heard mixed things on the Sony's highlight handling. I'm wondering if that bigger sensor adds that much more if it's hard to control color profile.
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 10 жыл бұрын
I am curious about that too. Tempted to order the JVC just to see. Yes the highlights do clip a bit on the X70. JVC has excellent controls and feature set but their cams in the past have promised much but never been great on the picture front, sadly.

( ? ) Does the zoom rocker allow for easing or ramped starts and stops? I used the HDR-CX900 for a while and found the abrupt starts/stops of zoom motion made footage look amateur. A smooth & feathered zoom is where it's at with pro production.
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 8 жыл бұрын
Forgive me saying but I tend to think most zooming, slow or otherwise, looks fairly poor within a video; I tend to use the zoom just for framing. That said, I don't remember the X70's zoom characteristic on the rocker - for measured zooms you'll always be much better off buying a separate zoom control and plugging that in.
@smartbizwebmedia5922
@smartbizwebmedia5922 8 жыл бұрын
Gotcha, thanks for the info. I can understand the point about framing where the actual zoom can be edited out. However, I do a lot of live music concert multicam projects where the main cam needs to focus on various targets without switching to other angles. The smoother the better.
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 8 жыл бұрын
Ah, yes, fair point. I'd still recommend a remote zoom demand but as I recall the Sony has some odd connector on it for this purpose.
@WaveRiderMusic
@WaveRiderMusic 8 жыл бұрын
yeah but if you are filming a continuous event, and need to reframe, you better not stop recording and the zoom should be nice! I agree on aesthetics, I have a super35 with interchangeable lenses, zooms are so tv-like but in a 1 cameraman situation, covering a live event, a good servo-zoom is great to have. I sold my canon xa10, and now I am shopping for another camcorder even if I have a Blackmagic 4k camera, mostly for the servo-zoom and convenience on run-and-gun

Thanks for the review. I currently have three quotes from my dealer, one for the Sony PXW -X70 another for the Canon XF205 and one for the JVC GY HM 600. If you had to choose, were would your money go?
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 10 жыл бұрын
Andrew O'Brien Well it might depend on what I was going to film. For example, ergonomically, the XF205 and HM600 beat the X70 due to having more physical controls on the body but depending on what you're filming, the more compact nature of the X70 might be preferable. The big downside of the XF205 (I have an XF200) is that the image is relatively noisy so it's only worth using on good lighting (and even then with a bit of negative gain switched in). I haven't used an HM600 so can't really comment on that, sorry. I think I'd buy the X70; great picture (good codec, if your NLE will handle it!) and future 4K ability.
@AndrewOBrienPhotography
@AndrewOBrienPhotography 10 жыл бұрын
UKAirscape Thank you. I am coming from a stills background - using the D800 for video - currently looking for my first camcorder, something of an all rounder workhorse. I suspected that the Canon could be noisy, my dealer recommends the JVC (probably for that reason). The Sony looks like great value - I am using Premier Pro, which, I am told, will deal with the XAVC. It is the ergonomics that might clinch it.
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 10 жыл бұрын
Andrew O'Brien Mmm, I'm not sure how noisy the JVC is; it is after all, a 1/3"-chip camera. The BBC has issued the HM600 to all its video journalists in the regions though so they clearly like it (although as far as I can see they all wander around with it on full auto (eeek!) and don't appear to know what the "ND filter" switch is for... :-( Yes, I believe the latest Premiere CC will cope with the X70's 10-bit 4:2:2 colour version of XAVC. And although it's so much of a buzzword at the moment, the X70's the only one that'll get a 4K upgrade which can be useful even if you're delivering in HD (instant zoom, pan and crop during the edit for example).

Hi. @UKAirscape

It is not a flaw, this is normal. You need to import the files using your video editing softare's "import" function rather than just copying the files onto the timeline. If you use Import, the software will stitch the files back togethe with no gap. Cheers.

thanks for the review What differences does it have with the AX100?
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 7 жыл бұрын
It's very similar in many ways (apart from the obvious addition of the XLR handle); it also uses the "auto/manual" button for ND properly where the AX100 is not as it looks... I preferred the controls and handling of the X70 much more than the AX100.

MXF is a standard format for professional video files such as you'd get from the PXW-X70. VLC will play them but you can adjust its settings for how it does so for example whether full screen or quarter resolution etc. There's nothing wrong with the files. Just set VLC to play back at 100% view.

@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 10 жыл бұрын
Isaac Alonzo Quite a few of their consumer-level camcorders have the floating lens system; Sony brand it "BOSS" (Balanced Optical Steadyshot System) but it would make the assembly too big to go into cameras with bigger sensors hence why you don't get it in their pro range, unfortunately. The mouse I think is a Dell mouse - or possibly a Microstar - came with a PC a long, lone time ago!

UKAirscape Thanks for the reply mate, I used one of those flotating lens cameras and the video is ridiculously steady! I have the Aperture lights (CRI) series both the small one and the 672 version and they seem great. Ive been shooting Canon DSLR, but now Im moving on to the Panasonic GH4. The word now is that serious digital cinema shooters are staring to look past DSLR form factors and on to video dedicated LSS cameras. The GH4 and SONY A7s are the exceptions right now. The deal though is I need a legitimate video camcorder in order to do more ENG style when needed. The X70 looks like a pretty good candidate. I think that people who actually make a living shooting video, will need to have a camcorder like an XDCAM of some sort and the ability to use it well. Final Cut Pro X is handling more and more file formats without much problem as well. Thanks for posting this.

Thank you for the excellent review. I'm deciding between this Sony X70, the Canon XA25, and the newly announced JVC GY-HM200. The XA20/25 only has one level of ND, and is activated in an odd way through a menu without complete user control. The JVC is nice, and has lots of dedicated switches and buttons that are in the same place they would be on a high end professional camera, but the size looks to be somewhat larger than the previous JVC (GY-HM150), and the X70 and XA25. So far I am leaning toward the X70. I like the idea of the 1" CMOS on the X70 for a more shallow depth of field for interviews, but it would be harder to record things like sports. It would be interesting to see some comparison tests of depth of field. Probably similar on wide shots, and as they are more zoomed in, the X70 depth of field would get shallow faster than the XA25. I have not seen any mention of time lapse or pre-record, so I am assuming that the X70 does not have those features. It would be nice if Sony would add these features at some point, perhaps when they offer the 4K upgrade in 2015.
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 10 жыл бұрын
dhvideo With the JVC not yet being released it's hard to make a judgement. Many of their previous cameras have looked great on paper but not so hot in reality (eg the poor low light / grainy pic on the HM700). The Canon is physically smaller than the Sony (esp minus XLR handle) so that could be a factor. But the Sony has the better codec in 50Mbps XAVC 4:2:2 10-bit (if your NLE can take it). Although the Sony should have a shallower depth of field, its lens isn't as fast as the Canon (f2.8 vs f1.8) which affects DoF and it ramps down really fast to f4. The Canon also offers 20x optical zoom which - albeit from a distance - can help to give you shallow DoF whereas the Sony is only 12x optical. That 20x lens on the Canon would also help in things like sports (albeit the Sony touts its 24x Clear Image Zoom) As for pre-rec (by which I assume you mean some kind of cache recording?) - the Sony doesn't offer this. It does, however, offer Slow and Quick recording which gives you a sort of timelapse, recording at up to 5000% speed - see page 61 in the manual.

I'm seriously considering getting the Sony PXW-X70, but I'm also curious about the Canon XA25 and the Panasonic AG-AC90A AVCCAM (which i know less about - it just came up during my research and was in a similar price range). I'd love your informed advice. Thanks again.

gabriel couture Hi. Thanks for the compliment. The XA25 is a fine little camera (I have the XA20 and all of the pieces to camera you see on my reviews in the editing suite were filmed on it) but it will not be 4K-compatible and its maximum codec bitrate is 35Mbps. The AG-AC90 I've not tried but it got really good reviews for a low-cost little camcorder and has the ergonomic advantage of 3 lens control rings but it's getting a little old now and won't have anything like the low-light abilities of the X70. Basically, the smart money now is on the X70, with fine manual controls, great low-light, future upgrade to 4K. There's nothing wrong with those other two but they are perhaps getting a little older now.

Great review! Not 'rambling" at all IMHO. I recently picked up one of these cameras alongside a Canon XA20 to compare and the Sony wins hands down in professional features and workflow IMHO. I , too, miss the Canon built in lens shutter cap, but Canon's all-via-menu adjustments were off-putting. Canon's lens is wider at full zoom out offers 1.8 iris along with a 16x optical zoom and I prefer the Canon lens...but the balance of the comparison goes to Sony. BTW, the multi-connector cable is about $20 US and connects easily to several pan-bar mounted zoom controllers. The Sony performed beautifully in a recent high school music event. AWESOME camera. And an awesome review!

Swarming Pixels Productions Ah that's very kind of you to say, thank you. Also useful to know how inexpensive that cable is, cheers! I'd still prefer a standard socket mind you... Canon is 20x optical. Yes, I'd buy the Sony now (though I have an XA20 and am very fond of it, indeed the main PTC in the review was filmed on it, cutaways on an XF200)

You're Great! Your grievances are Funny and so True! I own this little camcorder and do Love it, but it is front heavy and you have to zoom for miles to get focused.. Thanks for the info.

Great review. I have the Sony NX30 with floating lens it is amazing (They call it BOSS I believe) The footage is video look but great. Shot Triathlon by myself with it good stuff. I also have the AX100. Outstanding camera very similar to this PXW-X70. Will need a master camera and 2nd maybe 3rd for Emmy chef spots on PBS our BBC not quite sure what to do. I believe the bitrate 10 bite ?.of this camera is better. Want a lot of Sony quality (they are good) and small form factor. Also this new codec is a problem I work in FCPX.1. Does anyone know if this codec problem for the new XAVC S been solved? One comment it looks like this camera could have been a bit bigger with eyepiece etc. Great Job on this demo.

Tom Daniels Thank you for your compliment. The PXW-X70 does not shoot XAVC-S, that's the "consumer" version of the format used in the AX100 and this will work with FCPX I believe. The X70 shoots a "pro" version of XAVC which is 4:2:2 10-bit and is referred to as XAVC-L; I *think* I'm right in saying that the very latest update release of FCPX will read this natively but I wouldn't swear to it.

What a bizarre comment. Of course I will mention things that are important if they do or don't work for me. That's not whining, it's a review.
