Sorry for your loss Pete. I'm glad to hear that this spectacular album was able to lift your spirits when you needed it most. This and Rubber Soul are my top two Beatles albums and they always warm my heart when I break them out. I would throw in the White album to fill my top 3. So many amazing songs on the three of them!

As someone who is cynical of the remixes, remasters, digitally enhanced etc, etc … this remix of Revolver is outstanding. There’s a fullness in the sound and clarity unmatched in any other version. Stick on Dr Robert or Taxman and put yourself in 1966 through the 2022 portal. Five out of five for me.

Pete, deepest sympathies on the loss of your dog. Some of the most heartfelt tears of my life have been for pets that have passed. I know you gave your dog the best life possible. That’s what I take solace in whenever I’ve had to part with a beloved dog or cat. On a musical note, thanks for the Revolver review. It’s on my list of CD’s I will buy myself for Christmas. I have over 20 CD’s I need to listen to before I buy anymore music!

Interesting to hear early demos etc too. By the way, it always makes me smile when one of your dogs makes an appearance. So sorry to hear you lost one of them. You're so right about the Beatles music taking you out of the doldrums and putting a smile on your face! My brother lost his son in 2020 and the Beatles music has been a very cathartic thing for him over the last two years, and without it, I'm sure he would be in a worse place psychologically! For me, the remix is a triumph too with a better stereo mix than the old hard panned version and it's a far better listening experience altogether.

It's separated from the 4-track, not the mono-mix. I find the stereo sounding very good, but also there is some artificial sounds to the strings and the horns if you pay attention. This is due to this Peter Jackson software.

The song "Got To Get You Into My Life" might have inspired the horn rock groups like The Buckinghams, Blood, Sweat & Tears (which they did the remake with David Clayton-Thomas from 1975 "New City"), The Ides Of March, Chicago, Chase, Lighthouse, Tower Of Power & Earth, Wind & Fire (which also did the remake from 1978 "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" movie soundtrack & "The Best Of: Vol. 1").

Yeah the BS&T version predates the Earth Wind & Fire cover by some 3 years (1975 vs 1978 - although I like the later one more). McCartney does a really good live version on his Tripping The Live Fantastic. I also have a cover of it by Chris Clark & The Vancouvers (2017) which I believe wasoriginally recorded by them in '67 - sounds very Motown & sped up

I LOVE the alternate tracks. "Got to Get You Into My Life" with lead guitar instead of horns is eye-and-ear-opening. I really love these earlier versions as much as the fabulous new mix of the original album. A winner all the way. And next is "SAIL ON SAILOR" box-set from The Beach Boys. That has already been unbelievable based on the three tracks that have been released.

Very sorry for your loss. As a dog lover, I know the hurt and emptiness. You are absolutely right about the bonus tracks PW and Rain. They should have been added to the 1st disk and make it an extended album of 16 songs. Then have the 2nd disk only the alternate and early takes. Yes, the original ended with TNK and they want it to be kept as such. Well, that's how they did Pepper - SFF and PL were tacked on the 2nd disk. The Beatles were always about albums and singles, so it's not always a tidy experience to listen as we would like to do. We can create our own playlists at least. Giles and company did a fine job overall.

@wolf1977
@wolf1977 Жыл бұрын
I think they mostly sound good. Some were remastered over the years & those sound fine as well. I don't have a huge issue with The Beatles catalog sound-wise. I think part of it (for me) is growing up in some cases with the mono mixes/versions so anything else sounds a bit strange, even if the separation is better & the overall sound is 'cleaned up'. Technically those later versions are better but not necessarily more appealing (to me)

The original 1987 Beatles CDs don't sound very good at all... very flat and a bit too shrill. The 2009 remasters are good for the most part. Other than a couple flubs on the "White Album", the recent Giles Martin remixes have been spectacular.

I actually like the Nuge's version...Also Earth Wind & Fire's "Got To Get You Into My Life" (maybe my fave Beatles cover - Aerosmith did a good job with "Come Together" on the Sgt Pepper's film soundtrack), Chicago too. Tom Petty also covered "Taxman"...Other covers: Aretha Franklin's "Eleanor Rigby" along with Alice Cooper's, Emmylou Harris/"Here, There and Everywhere", Matthew Sweet's "She Said She Said", Living Colour's "Tomorrow Never Knows" (heavy), Smithereens/"I Want to Tell You", Black Keys/"She Said She Said". The Jam covered "And Your Bird Can Sing" - let's not forget the Muppets & "Yellow Submarine"

Cool that you purchased this. To me, a remix is like taking apart a car, rebuilding it, and giving it a new polish. Big fan of remixes. I have ones by Jethro Tull, Genesis, Beatles, King Crimson, and Marillion. We do have Peter Jackson to thank. I heard a few years ago that there would be no more reissues after Let It Be because current remixing technology wouldn't do the early albums justice. Peter Jackson has a company that separated audio elements on the Let It Be film.

I still feel that the first press (Mono) of Revolver sounds amazing. This is my favorite album by the Beatles. The stereo version definitely a great mix with headphones. The version of Eleanor Rigby from the Yellow Submarine Songbook version from 1999 is the best that I have ever heard. Very sorry that you lost your dog as they are definitely family.
@rabarebra

No need to remix the mono, it is mono. The problem with the older stereo and past remaster were the placement of individual instruments hard panned right and left - not very good for headphones listening. Go check out the 2009 Remaster on Spotify using headphones - how does that feel hearing a drumkit on your left and vocals all the way to the right? With the new stereo, these issues is eliminated. Back to the mono. Things here are laid on top of each other or behind as it was intended by the Beatles, so no need for replacement or a remix treatment. Also most people wanted the 2014 mono back in the vinyl record presses, as it became quite sought after and expensive on the secondhand market.

Can I answer for him, I have watched videos in the past when he discussed this. He bought vinyl records back in the day. He had a vinyl collection up until the late 1980s or thereabouts and then he switched to the CD format as I guess it was thought vinyl was becoming obsolete. He said he sold almost all, if not all of his vinyl collection. He’s carried on with CDs ever since and is fine with sound quality etc. He has not started doubling up by buying vinyl again and he does not own a record player to spin vinyl records. Some SoT contributors on Prog Seat and the Curse of The Collector have tried to get him going back again to vinyl but look at how many CDs he has. Its a cost/space issue now.

@@randytaylor220 I own both vinyls and CDs. CDs I wouldn't buy anymore. I do like both, though. But I don't get why you would buy zero and ones (data) on a physical plastic disc when a computer or streaming service has the exact same data. When it comes to vinyl, I love the sound, but it is also a complete cash-cow by the industry to have something physical to sell, no doubt about it. Also lots of issues with warped records coming from pressing plants. Also, you need to wash and clean your LPs. Yep, they are dirty directly from the pressing plants. Also the your stylus' needle wears out. Mine cost about $1000 and it only lasts for 1000 hours. Can't replace the needle on mine, have to buy a new one or re-tip it (if they do that anymore). So, vinyls is costy but fun. It is fun to find old records and play them, wash them care for them. LOL Why do you think these prog-bands wants Pete into vinyls again? It is about $$$$$$$$.

That being said it sounds amazing. I will say She Said She Said has a pause and lack of guitar in the beginning (on headphones it’s more apparent). But, the original stereo does too on the right channel, but you need to listen to it more carefully. I’m surprised Giles couldn’t fix this.

the big difference with the remix is they've changed the channels quite radically so you don't get that typically awkward early stereo mix where all the drums are sometimes on the other channel and all the bass is in the opposite channel etc. So basically a lot of centralization going on. It makes it feel a little punchier, fuller, crisper and a bit more modern, but the real difference really jumps at you on the headphones.

as a 64 year old life long Beatlemaniac, I like the sound quality of the 2022 Revolver mix but I’m a bit frustrated by some of the stereo pans; why retain some of the original stereo mixes? back in 1966, you accepted the drums on one side and the bass on the other or the vocals on one side and the obvious overdubs on the other because they were locked together on the limited 4 track format (which is why I listen to the 2009 remastered mono mixes which is how the band and their production crew intended us to hear it but I digress) I thought this groovy new way to make individual tracks for each instrument & voice would result in more modern, natural sounding stereo mixes…put the bass & drums in the center; split the guitars and have the obvious overdubs like tambourine & cowbell more comfortably in the mix

I think there's at least one more remaster from 2014 (in Mono). At least that's the date stamped on my digital files. Discogs has it listed - from Parlophone. I believe George Martin was in charge. The notes: "This album was cut from the original master tapes using a completely analogue signal path and with constant reference to the notes made by the cutting engineer for the first pressing of the LP. It has been made with current technology and without imposing the restrictions necessitated by the limitations of record players in the 1960s. Consequently, this version reveals more of the content of the audio on the master tapes."

I never really understood the distinction between rock and pop in a Beatles context. I'm not often impressed with Wikipedia's take on things but in this case I think this line from the Wikipedia article on pop music is pretty spot on: "During the 1950s and 1960s, pop music encompassed rock and roll and the youth-oriented styles it influenced. Rock and pop music remained roughly synonymous until the late 1960s, after which pop became associated with music that was more commercial, ephemeral, and accessible." What would be an example of a Beatles song that is _pop_ and _not_ rock?
@wolf1977
@wolf1977 Жыл бұрын
I agree that pop & rock were synonymous for a while during the 60's. I also think that rock n roll became 'rock' sometime in the mid 60's, so technically (if you buy into that time frame) anything before that is r&r (or something else) & not really 'rock' (maybe 'proto-rock' if early Black Sabbath is 'proto-metal'?). So that would include the earliest Beatles albums. Then again 60's Hendrix was labeled as 'pop', as was The Who - and entire 'Pop' festivals like Atlanta Pop, Monterey Pop, Miami Pop etc. In hindsight many of these acts were rock bands (per our updated definition) & not 'pop' as we know it today but that's in hindsight... TBH the arguments over whether the Beatles were a rock or a pop band are really kinda tiring, later albums definitely contained songs that we now consider to be rock songs & a lot of their early stuff was vocal-oriented & pretty commercial (ephemeral/acessible?) so we can call it pop even today. Back in the day a lot if not most of it was referred to as 'pop'. I read an article a while back that tried to define rock and roll as "rhythmic tension between the guitar and the drums" with emphasis on having a "swinging rhythm section" that the guitars are in a sense fighting against. And that early r&r drummers came from the jazz world. Per that definition r&r turned into rock when those drummers left jazz behind & somewhat simplified things while the guitars (and bass) were now locked into the drums to create an overall heavier sound. I don't think you hear that too much on earlier Beatles recordings (with some exceptions) but you do later on

Revolver one of the greatest 'Pop' albums of all time (Pop was only just beginning to morph into 'rock' in 1966 - not until Hendrix released 'Are You Experienced' did 'Rock' become a genre imho). Revolver still sounds contemporary today - 56 years later!). I have only owned the original UK 1966 vinyl issue. What remaster/remix version of this classic would people recommend as there seem to be so many to choose from - I would like to get a definitive version of it and am not really interested in out-takes add ons.

Some questions to ask yourself first: 1) Are you someone who's a stickler for "original content" & is a purist? 2) Do you mind mono or does everything have to be in stereo (when available)? I think the answer as to "definitive version" will differ depending on who you ask. I think my 2014 remastered mono version sounds very good - this one sounds DIFFERENT as it's been remixed & presented in stereo, with instruments moved in space when you're listening. It also sounds very good, probably only you could say which is 'better' (to you)

Like all the remixes from Sgt. Pepper & after, the Drums & Bass sound more up front & not buried in the mixes from past issues. The vocals are centered in the soundscape & not in 1 channel off the remasters. The Beatles mixed these albums to be mono, not stereo. With you Pete on Paperback Writer & Rain since they were remixed to & add to the original. Like they should have done with Sgt. Pepper adding Strawberry Fields & Penny Lane.

Besides being maybe brighter, this remix has the instruments placed in a modern stereo field, as opposed to the "afterthought" stereo mixes that were done in the 60's with lots of instruments (or all!) all on one side or something. This mix has NONE of that. This is a more enveloping mix that's never weird or lopsided sounding.

The Revolver box set was too expensive for me so just like Pete Pardo, I settled for the excellent Double CD edition! I MIGHT however save up my money and buy the Rubber Soul Box set when and if the bad boy arrives! I love all the Beatles albums but the ones released between 1964 and 1966 are my favourites. Revolver is a perfect album. You can't just tack on two more songs at the end. You're altering the album when you do that. I am SO glad they didn't do that! I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved dog. I can relate and know how hard it can be... you're not losing a "pet"... you're losing a family member. But, you're right... the music of The Beatles can do a great job of making things seem not quite so bad.

I agree about not "tacking on songs" to change the original album but I'm OK with presenting the original on a separate disk (disk 1)& then presenting additional material on additional disks. I think that additional material is what made some of the other/prior remasters so good - I actually wish there were more of this 'new' music included in this Revolver package besides just various rehearsal takes & song fragments

@@ScottyKirk1 I think one can make some real arguments against 'remixes' in general as it can be (and often is) 'destructive', meaning you're getting content that wasn't originally present. That's in contrast to 'remasters' that use existing master tapes (hopefully the best available) & basically just 'clean up' the sound. Somewhat like films & things like aspect ratio, where purists always want to preserve that original aspect ratio (even if it's something radical like 2.76:1 & the resulting picture looks absolutely tiny on your tv) & their argument is that this is the way the director intended you to see the movie (versus the way you might like to see it). Do you care about the director's (& here the sound engineer/producer/artist's) intent and should you, or be happy with a newly remixed product if it sounds good to you? I've read that the band would create dual mono/stereo mixes for some of their albums but that George Martin greatly preferred Mono (he thought Stereo was a 'gimmick'), and that "they recorded for mono and adapted for stereo". So for example is separating out all of the individual instruments on Revolver 'wrong' (as in: not true to the original recordings)? I think personally I tend not to like remixes but it's hard to argue here that Revolver doesn't sound better. Also I tend to be in favor of liking what you like instead of trying to make a director or producer 'happy' by viewing/listening to something in the way they intended. But I can definitely understand the purist arguments too...

@@wolf1977 I love the original mono mixes too as well as the 65 original stereo mixes along with the "centered" mixes of the 87 CDs (supervised by George Martin)! I DO even love the new stereo audio mixes of old cinema that was originally mono. Stereo turned out not to be such a fad apparently George! 😉 The Sgt Pepper's newest box set was a leap in sound remixed from the pre-bounced masters as well... But honestly how many times have you bought a "remaster" of some classic album that sounded really the same or worse? (I'm talking to YOU Rush) Haha 😂 The record companies are notorious for the old bait and switch for this type of thing... Even Pink Floyd re-recorded the drum tracks for Momentary Lapse which was fairly underwhelming... Anything to get more product out there in the marketplace. You could argue this conflicted with the original vision, but it was probably a slight improvement, except for Sorrow. I don't consider all these Beatles releases cash grabs in any way, because they know that they are putting out quality product. But with the eventuality of the physical medium going away probably in our lifetimes I'm glad the record companies are digging deep into the vaults to bring out these treasures. And using this new stem tech seems really good to me. I am curious about what other things this might be applied to. Something like Pet Sounds would be an interesting thing to deconstruct. The OG mixes will always be there if anyone rails against these new items for artistic integrity reasons.... But for me personally, I've scoured the Earth for all of the 10,463 bootlegs of live and outtakes for around 30 years, so these new releases are just icing on the cake because I can never get enough of The Beatles! 🥂 😉 👌 I'll trust Giles to continue George's vision, but no one else is allowed.

I am a fan of the remixes but Revolver is disappointing on some fronts. Like all the others, the mix is sharper and everything is more defined, but the volume level is a consistent LOUD all the time. Take Yellow Submarine for example. While the vocals on the fade out are all very clear and separation is astounding, the part right after the instrumental/sound effects, where Paul uses a weird voice to repeat what Ringo sings, Paul's voice is turned up loud from the start, where on the original, it fades in gradually. When I heard that, I gave the entire CD a second listen. It's all so LOUD. It doesn't push it to the point of distortion, but there needs to be more dynamic range on it instead of just being as loud as possible. This wasn't an issue on the white album or Abbey Road, as the remixes allowed the quiet parts to be quiet, but Revolver is just LOUD LOUD LOUD.

First off The Beatles are my fave all time band. Having said that, I'm generally not big on 'remixes' ('remasters' - OK). Getting the extras is interesting I'd imagine (kinda a 'Curse Of The Collector' thing - not for me though). Do I really feel the need to own both mono & stereo mixes of the songs? Not really. I did stick my toe in & listened to some of this (the 5cd Super Deluxe Edition), as Pete said it sounds really good (cd 1). However I already have the 2014 (US) remastered version that also sounds fine to me. Do I need all of the various takes of the tracks (cd 2 & 3 - rehearsals/slowed down/backing tracks only/work tapes/sound effects? Again, no. As Pete noted at least some of this is for the 'geeks'... A lot of the same things were done with Let It Be (50Th Anniversary, Super Deluxe Edition) - also 5 cd's. However that set has some real 'new' nuggets like the "Oh! Darling (Jam)" & Billy Preston's "Without A Song". Even the earlier Abbey Road Super Deluxe package had "Come And Get It" & some interesting demos. The White Album 6cd 50Th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition had Harrison's "The Inner Light" & again some good studio jams ("Step Inside Love", "Blue Moon") & a bunch of wonderful demos (cd3)...Unfortunately nothing like that here on this Revolver set

I'm not liking any of the Giles Martin remixes so far. The bass and the drums are way too boosted, the separation of the instruments are non existent to me, compressed, etc. I stick with the 2009 remasters done by George Martin himself, they sound spectacular, so good I felt like listening to them for the first time. What upsets me the most is that the remasters are being substituted by the remixes, at least on vinyl. I got the cd box and older versions, but not the vinyls. Finding Sgt. pepper, Abbey Road, the white album, and let it be is going to be difficult.

Overall an excellent remix, but my favorite on this album: She Said, She Said is no longer a rock song in this remix. It sounds too dry, like a folksy demo version. All the bite and 'oomph' is gone. And although I appreciate hearing the tiny details in the guitar parts I think it isn't meant to be heard this clearly. I'm a bit on the fence about Tomorrow never knows, but I feel this track has lost a bit punch and drive as well.
