Been using the Delter every morning for a year and it’s on its last legs. Haven’t seen anyone mention this online yet but all the plastic around the top that the cap screws onto is frayed and has hairline fractures from multiple use and screwing on and off. Constantly leaks around the cap now as well. Not good. My aeropress has lasted 5 years so far and as good as the day I got it.

Disclaimer: I am Australian... I have a Delter coffee press and love it, I find the coffee to be a sweeter and a little lighter in colour more like a pour over then the taste that my aeropress gives me which is a bit heavier and a slight bitter note. In saying that I believe both do an amazing job at what they’re designed for. My normal brew in the Delter is 15g coffee at a medium/fine and I only pour 100g water in and do a very soft 50g infusion I then add back to the 200 line (I guess making it 250g of water in total) and plunge again 100g and 100g. I’ve never bothered putting the rubber plug (coffee dosing tool) back in and just press on the 3 wings of the plunger and have never been scolded, but I am aware of it always. I also don’t run the puck dry into the cup but place it over the sink and dry the puck there and then push it out into a bin, which might be why I don’t get any bitterness from that final press. Love your videos James you got me hooked on this wonderful world of coffee. #fanforlife Cheers mate Adam

Very fair review. It has replaced my aeropress in the morning when I’m concentrating on cooking eggs and not brew timing! The same little issues you described, but I find there’s less room to cock up a cup, I’ve had no bad brews since switching, whereas with the aeropress I could occasionally make a pretty poor cup when distracted.

I have both - I think that coffee from the Delter is more consistent and less prone to bitterness than an aeropress. The coffee brewed is generally lighter and closer to a pour-over style. It is probably a better solution for someone who doesn't want to invest time in thinking about the brew (like my wife) but conversely it is fussier and harder to use which is why she insists on using aeropress and hates the Delter. The aeropress, when combined with scale, timer, and a prismo makes far superior coffee to my tastes but if you just want to chuck coffee in and move on, the Delter has its advantages. If I had to choose only one, no question it would be the aeropress.

Thanks for the great review! One of the key things is Delter is not an aeropress.. It works differently, the coffee bed is separated from the water, vs aeropress both in the same chamber. I've been getting much cleaner coffee with more clarity and less bitter on the delter. 17g coffee med grind size 92C water Add 40ml water, press for the bloom wait 30 sec, meanwhile add 210ml, divide that into 3 presses, aiming for total brew time of 2:30 Pretty good results, though so much room for multiple techniques and running tds tests!

I just did a head to head of my trusty Aeropress v the Delter Coffee Press which I had delivered yesterday. Did 12g of very fine end of medium grind to 200mls water in both. Did a blind taste and was able to identify my regular aeropress cup in the taste test. I did have marginally less bitterness in the Delter brew. Both cups were very good. Both brewers are fun to use and experiment with. So many variables. I quite like the plunger system on the Delter and how it allows you to add more water without removing. It gives the potential to make a bigger brew. Clean up, and thankfully I watched this video before I ever used the Delter is as James said not as straight forward as the brilliantly simple Aeropress. However it's still not difficult. The gaskets can be a little finicky to put back on. If you enjoy brewing coffee with different methods then you will like the Delter.

Nice review as always, Sir. I never really liked the Aeropress for many reasons (ugly, useless numbers on it, cloudy coffee etc, everything is o.c. subjective)...and I was really searching for a fast, easy way to make drinkable (not competion-level-) coffee at work. So I pregrind 12g in little containers, put it inside the Delter when needed and fill boiling water to the 200 mark in it. Preinfuse, press, done. No scale, no timer...no tilting the "inverted Aero-tower", no force to press the plunger. A nice, clean cup. After using, I press through some air to dry it and let it sit until the next brew. Yes, the cleaning is a bit more work...but no real problem. So, FOR ME, the Delter Delter solves some problems and I enjoy using it. Best wishes, keep up the good work

While I love the Delter press, one issue I have had with it myself is the shower screen popping out of place and struggling to get it back into place. I think the Aeropress was really well designed for convenience and ease of use and that's a bit lacking in the Delter. Although I do still really enjoy the way the Delter produces a coffee and the lack of dripping before you press down which is my one main issue with the Aeropress.

You haven't mentioned that you can brow double to amount without the need of replacing the coffee grind. However, it'll become harder to push when you double the amount. I've done it with 24g medium grind coffee with 400 ml water. Another thing I noticed is that if you brew twice back to back, things will get massy and gasket in the plunger will act weirdly.
@jiuns
@jiuns 5 жыл бұрын
Hi James, I agree that the channelling is a big problem, with slight pressure will cause strong water punching thru the coffee ground hence channeling, but if we push too gently might end up with longer extraction time. Regarding the water volume splitting, you can first pour specific amount of water into chamber then press. after then press then fill another round of water, with this you can get more precise control of water volume per press rather than looking at the marking which is not very accurate .

James - Enjoyed your review. I'm a long time Aeropress user, having used paper filters and most of the metal discs including the Able Disc and Ameuus (both o2 and 01 10k). I figured I'd give the Delter Press a try. I was impressed after my first brew and found it to be very close to a V60 or Kalita Wave pour over in quality. I agree with many of the points you raise in your review - the loose fitting cap, the close but not-quite-the-same-as-Aeropress filter size, the plunger-gasket that sometimes gets twisted, and you can't fully eject the coffee puck for a simple cleanup. The bottom line to me though is that it makes a great cup of travel coffee that is consistently closer in quality to a pour over than I've been able to achieve from my Aeropress.

Enjoyed watching this. Lucky I didn't see it first or I wouldn't have bought the Delter. For people like me the Delter is easier. As a non expert user the Aeropress was much harder for me to consistently get nice tasting coffee from. I would stir too little or too much, or let it steep too long or not long enough. On the Delter those steps are eliminated so I can't get them wrong. I use a kitchen kettle and would tend to pour it too early or too late. On the Delter that is easily recoverable, on the Aeropress it was just another mistake that made the coffee taste bad. Occasionally when I did make a nice cup on the Aeropress it didn't taste so good towards the end because some of the grinds got past the filter. On the Delter that never seems to happen.
@MrDarren690
@MrDarren690 4 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised you say that the Delter is easier. I use my AeroPress almost exactly like the written instructions--a scoop or two of coffee, water up to the 2, stir until smooth (which isn't a lot), press, dilute, punch out the puck. Then again I don't own a Delter so you might have the edge on me in that regard.

I’ve used this for the last few months, nothing else. That black little bit is meant to be the dosing cap, but I’ve never even used it for that. It’s stayed in the box. You can just be careful and use your fingers on the sides to press it down. Also durability wise, I’ve had to replace all the rubber before I used up all the 100 included filter papers so you’ll want to keep an eye on that.

I picked up this pretty soon after it came out. My initial expectation was that it would replace my borrowed Aeropress but it won't do that. It's totally different. It's closer in style to a V60 or some other pourover/filter coffee, but just easier to do. The place it's now sitting in my routine is when I want a filtered coffee but need to save time, or space, or when I just don't feel like going through the whole ritual of a V60. I think as an Australian brand, they tried to shy away from tying it in with filtered coffee cause that's just a naughty word over here. Instead, they talk about things like "reduced agitation" and "control". However I found it was really useful to introduce me to a lot of the concepts, brew time, structure and the like that I now use with my V60. The problems though are mostly what you've mentioned. I don't bother with the cap on top (they sent me two for some reason), I just carefully press down on the fins, live on the edge. The seal on the plunger often gets twisted for me as well and there seems to be a bit of water leaking through. The shower screen (I think they call it the "jet seal") is problematic. As it wears out, coffee sometimes backwashes into the upper chamber, I don't know what impact that has, but I doubt it's intended. It definitely does not distribute water evenly, I think just cause it bows out when pressure is applied to it. If you're not applying enough pressure, it'll only come out of the center few holes, and I'm concerned of what happens when full pressure is applied. If you peel back the paper after you've used it and dissect the puck a little bit, it looks like the coffee just gets blown to the edges and there's very little in the center. Looking at it pouring through a glass mug shows extraction is not even. It's the classic problem that added complexity adds to fragility. Pros, I don't find the cleaning too cumbersome, It looks a million times better than the aeropress, the mechanism is pretty cool, it's the quickest easiest way I can think of to get filtered style coffee with a manual setup. I absolutely love the concept. But for now if I've got the time and capacity, I'll use my V60. If they release a v2 which fixes the problems with both of the seals, I'll be first in line to grab it.

The most tempting feature for me is refilling. I need to make 500ml each morning for my commute and use about 30-35g coffee in Aeropress. It’s a pain with the Aeropress, I let it drip to get the second pour, but it is clearly doable with the Delter.

I brought a Delter via the kick-starter when it was launched. I don't have an Aeropress so this was my first experience with making coffee this way. It took a little while to get used to. Finding the grind size that suited me and working out how long I wanted to brew. My recipe is Fill to the line above the 200mL mark with your water. Raise plunger to 50mL line and slowly plunge and let sit for 30 secs. Pull up plunger to 100mL line and plunge again. Then plunge the remaining water. A downside I did find was that twice now on the second plunge the rubber shower jet has drawn in a tiny bit of coffee grounds from the puck. The water I was about to plunge through the puck was already going brown with the floating grounds - not ideal. Never the less I have kept experimenting and I am mostly happy with the Delter. If I am looking to make a fast brew it is definitely the way to go.

It makes a great coffee and comes with a metal filter so reusable but it's way too fiddly when you're used to the simplicity of the aeropress. I tried using a second filter over the coffee to keep the puck intact but found there was no need

Nice summary. I have a Delter, and I'm a longtime aeropress brewer, so i approached it in the same regard. I echo the frustrations and feelings you have - it's so close to the aero that it's easy to use it just like an aero. Your review has quite rightly pointed out that it's not an aero - I'm going to give the Delter another shot, brew on it with an open mind and treat it as its own thing. We'll see if that improves the result. Thanks for the video.

Just got one to try, and I was impressed by how precise it can be over the aeropress, where its pretty much guess work about how much you're plunging each time. Maybe i've got thicker skin but I lost the cap and still didnt have any trouble plunging with my palm. Gotta disagree with your opinion of the cleanup though as the coffee stays in its own chamber, so the rest of the delterpress doesnt get oily the way my aeropress did. Always love your videos James!

I bought a delta press a few months ago. Aeropress filters work fine in it as long as its positioned properly. I totally share your thoughts on the cleaning, its real pain compared to most other brewers. I keep trying to persevere with it but find it to be quite inconsistent compared to a kalita, v60, chemex etc which could be because of the spray pattern not being even like you mentioned....and those of us that bought the delta after it had left kickstarter didn't get the little black cap for the top at all so its just burnt palms for us 😂

James I really thought your review would be more positive, I agree it’s nothing like an aero press except in shape and compactness. I’ve used aero press filters in it with no issues, it doesn’t let more water through only what you push, when you lift the plunger the water drops into the outer chamber which is wider so the ml measurement are no longer true, only when it’s in the inner chamber as you fill it do the ml markings measure correctly. I use this everyday and you can use the plunger to push out your coffee into the bin but it does take a rinse which I agree is somewhat faffy. I don’t use the rubber cap and have never burnt myself, it doesn’t drop out and it does measure exactly 12g coffee beans, but I prefer the hario scoop for my coffee measuring requirements. Like I said to the other commenter, I use this at work and v60 at home and I’m really happy with it, I found the aero press has too many additional pieces and was a bit too much faff, pour, stir, steep, plunge, inverted - non inverted, and I think it made coffee a little too strong and with some sediment. Anyway, I’m happy to answer any questions on my use, as other than v60 it’s my favourite coffee maker so far, thanks for the video :-)
@natchurldisaster
@natchurldisaster 5 жыл бұрын
The cap/scoop absolutely does not measure out 12g of coffee beans. The weight to bean size ratio varies wildly depending on a vast number of factors so it's not really possible for this to be accurate. You should just take the extra 20 seconds to weigh your beans.
@andylscott
@andylscott 5 жыл бұрын
Christopher Cambell what you say is correct, what I mean was that I weighed the amount of my preferred brand / type of beans that fit into the cap, and it was 12g every time, obviously my scales aren’t the most accurate but it was good enough for at work, when I can’t carry scales with me, but actually what I prefer is one level hario scoop of coffee beans and 350ml water measured by the delter, (obviously it’s not a full 350 after brew). It’s a quick brew at work that’s good enough, not striving for absolute perfection like at home.

Hello James, love your videos but (yay we live in a free country) disagree with you on a few points here. What I don’t understand is that you think it’s so hard to clean? I just push out the puck turn it around rinse the brew chamber under the tap and ready. Most of the time I don’t use the rubber plug, never scalded my hand. The coffee is, as mentioned by others really clean and transparent, love it. Love the Aeropress as well, but haven’t used it in quite a while.

I’ve been waiting for you to cover this forever! Haven’t watched the video, but I have one and love it. I’ve also briefly used the aeropress and I have to say I like the Delter experience better Edit: I normally push some (about half the chamber) air through the puck over the sink to compress and get rid of the water inside, then lift the plunger up about quarter of the way, then unscrew and plunge. The air gets the puck out easily and a quick rinse to get rid of the residual grounds is all that’s left. Also, it takes a bit of practice, but the original didn’t come with the black lid so I do it by gripping the sides and plunging it in stages - one preinfusion and two push throughs. That means I can use it over a collapsible cup! I use aeropress filters for it, and have no problems whatsoever about the slightly bigger size- the cup still comes out clean. I should also mention I got the Delter before I tried the aeropress, and that’s probably why I favour it over the aeropress.

I've used my aeropress sorta like that for a good while now (a column of hot water through a puck of coffee), and I can tell you that the aeropress does it better than that delter. Now seeing the ideas of the delter I would make a couple of similar modifications to the AeroPress piston to make it easier but still its quite straight forward even without. I use just about espresso grind size, low amount of water straight outta boiler, and fairly quick brewtime and I'd say I get 80% of what espresso is, and to me thats f***in awesome from a piece of plastic and rubber.

Hey James, just like coffeeology, I love that you're more relaxed, it's almost soothing to watch you talk about a product, which is kinda weird, but there it is. I think you should consider making your audio mix louder, though. Your balance is good b/w you and the music, and your consistency of speaking volume is great, but in the context of other videos being louder, it means I have to turn up my volume to sufficiently hear you, and then the next video I watch, I go deaf. So you're great, but please consider your overall volume in the context of people also watching other videos. Great stuff, though

The paper gives a better finish for me and apparently, it's healthier as it also captures some type of chemical molecule in coffee that is linked to the build-up of bad cholesterol...well that's what my barista told me anyways. I agree though the metal filter gives an astringent taste.

@@sdfgsdfg9549 For sure, paper filters capture and retain the oils while metal screens let them pass through. I don't have the top cap thing, which means I don't have the annoyance of it falling out, I can still press without burning my hand, just use my fingers on the edges. I found that you shouldn't press too hard, otherwise the o-ring gets jammed.

I have a ton of glass custard cups where I presoak the paper filter disc, and they're the perfect size to rest an Aeropress to cool off. Also good ingredient holders for stuff measured in tablespoons. I think I may have bought the first design of the Aeropress, and the plastic they used for the outer sleeve cracked, rendering it useless. A lot of people reported that the rubber boot of the plunger is the first to fail, but other than the polymer breaking down into rubber and a nasty residue for the same model I had, I've never had the boot fail. I bought another Aeropress, of course. 😁

Just a tip for any aeropress owners wanting to try this full percolation style, you can replicate this using a melodrip to avoid agitating the coffee bed while pouring, which creates a pretty much clean column of water on top of the bed. I tried this today with a bloom before the main pour, just to allow the grounds to degas so they don't float, and the results on my first attempt were excellent. If you've got a melodrip kicking about, give it a whirl.

I find it works very well with a very slow 30-50 ‘bloom’ then 100ml then 50ml with quite a bit of air in the top. Probably the same extraction time as a v60 so quite slow and get best results this way. From memory the idea is to be as gentle as least disruptive as possible to the bed.

I have a Delter and I do not totally agree with you. It's a bit of getting used to but what I like the most is that delter brews an amazing juicy coffee. Really clean cup. What I do now is dose 15 gr of coffee (Tim Wendelboe and Friedhats is what I use most) I pour 200ml just of the boil in the Delter. Place the cap on. Than start the timer en raise the plunger to 50ml,press that really slow, once that's done wait till 60 sec and raise plunger till upper press line. Press that trough, raise plunger for last bit of water and press trough. You should be at the 2 minute mark or less. This gives me an excellent cup and way sweeter, juicier and cleaner than a aeropress brew for a lot of beans. I use the aeropress also, absolutely love that thing together with the V60 but the Delter has won a place in my coffee kitchen. 😉 Cleaning is not a big problem. After getting the grounds out just rinse it under some water and done. Please let me know what you think of this Mr. Hoffman. Kind regards, Bob

@@time1187 to be honest, I only give it about 10 secs. I really should try different infusion times. I went camping the other day and bought a pack of supermarket pre ground coffee. Was a course grind best for French press, but I fulled the whole 'group head? ' , gave it 30secs of pre infusion and had a real nice strong and smooth black coffee. So many variables. Only down side I have found with this unit if it can burn you when doing the initial plunge. I'vehad the seal not work when I go for the first 50ml and the plunger just drops covering my hand in boiling water. Done it 3 times now. I'm super careful after that.

Happy to finally see a complete review of the Delter! I backed them on Kickstarter and loved this brewer since I received it. Honestly, I find Delter to be a much less finicky brewer than Aeropress, I have no loose parts on it or anything btw. And yes, the longevity of Delter is questionable, cleaning the base might not be as pleasant as in the Aeropress (though you still have to wash the Aeropress after brewing), Delter still makes a great cup of coffee with way less effort in my opinion. I haven't used the Aeropress in about 6 months, after switching to Delter, because after 3 years of playing around with recipes I just got bored and frustrated. Yes, Delter takes away some degree of control you have with an Aeropress, but the result is nothing to complain about. You get a hang of how Delter works very fast, as James explained in this review, you will be just fine with using Aeropress paper filters. Coffee that comes out is delicious and my user experience has been great so far.

Very nice video, and a comprehensive answer to the (slightly clickbaity?) question posed in the title. The Delter is an interesting concept, but it does seem a little fiddly in comparison to the product against which it is so clearly positioning itself. I have owned my Aeropress for close to ten years(!) and I love it to death - it makes a very good long cup with little waiting and barely any effort. It would take a very special product indeed to make me even consider using something else, and sadly the Delter just doesn't seem to be that product.

I Have been using the Delter regularly since it where launched, and i agree with allot of the design related problems. However I think it solves som of the clarity related issues I had with the Aeropress that I used for years prior to getting the Delter. And yes it’s not as versatile as the Aeropress, yes you need to plunge it slowly or you’ll get a muddy brew, yes it’s not nearly as easy to clean, however you can lift the plunger and re plunge it over a bin and it will be a bit more clean than demonstrated. I can personally live with the nitpicking parts because it dos make a very transparent brew that is relatively easy to make.

You don't need to cut the paper. Just put the paper over the opening and press it in with the plunger to shape it and then remove the paper to add the coffee. I stopped using this method of the second paper since I was worried about water finding the easiest path through the edges of the paper and coffee. We need a rubber sealed shower plate that we can push down before adding water.

I've had a Delter since 2018, it has been fantastic for camping. I agree it's more fiddly, to drop the puck I unscrew, remove my filter and then draw the plunger back and depress again, usually onto a tree that needs some nutrients, and it pops out in one hit. Quality, I think they went the wrong way with the plastic, I too have hairline fractures, I'm glad I wear glasses as one day I fear they will become safety glasses. It does make good coffee and when you're freezing from a morning swim it tastes even better. We take this and a moka pot camping and they're often left in the back of the car. If I'm on my own I use the moka, with a group it tends to be the delta as we have one burner, with one kettle and can brew coffees as teas... I honestly bought it because it's different and got hit with targeted advertising. Will it last forever... no. It should, we need to stop making throw away devices full stop. Pay the money, buy quality and buy once. I've got a Rok press, a moka and this. I don't like anything that relies on electricity...

I read a review from someone here in Canada who used the AeroPress but thought they'd give the Delter Press a try. After a few months of use they found the v seal on the plunger stopped working. Normally, as you press down on the plunger, the v seal pushes the water through the coffee puck. But this person said that when the seal stopped working, the water was no longer pressed through the puck. He had to purchase a new v seal because it is not covered under warrantee. It is a part which is expected to wear out. Additionally, parts must be imported to Canada from overseas. This makes the v seal fairly expensive for a part that needs to be replaced every few months. Based on your review, the fact that the Delter Press costs more than the AeroPress and the review from a local Canadian, I think I'll stick with my AeroPress. The one thing I would be interested in is a portable, small, temperature controlled kettle to use with my AeroPress and handle grinder. Then I could put together a little travel kit.

See that rubber/ plastic cap? I never use it. I have also never burnt my hands. Press down on the three lobes. I use aeropress filter papers and have no issues what so ever. I also use the copper/ gold coloured metal aeropress filters. No issues there (it can be a bit harder to press the water through). As for emptying the coffee and filter paper, there is a way that, most times, is clean and easy. First, leave the Delter to sit there so a few drops more water come out. Next, hold the delter upside down and unscrew/ remove the cap and set the cap aside. Then holding the whole unit, the right way up, above the bin raise the plunger in the delter unit. Finally press the plunger down rapidly down. The filter paper and most, if not all, of the coffee is now in the bin and the Delter just needs a quick rinse. I find the Delter easier to use than the Aeropress and I enjoy the coffee I get out of the Delter. I am drinking a lot more coffee now than when I used the Aeropress. This is down to it being quicker and easier to make a coffee with the Delter. At half five in the morning, at the start of my two hour drive to work, I get to enjoy that coffee.

I think to brew the delters easer and less fuss but defantly not as easy to clean, the main point for me is I'm getting a much cleaner sweeter cup with the delter than the aeropress. The aeropress is more robust but for me the delter gives better results

Probably a little late but I agree with all the comments ( not sure if that is good or weird)! I make my coffee in the field at work and 4 w/driving. Aeropress certainly easier and cleaner but both are fun. My main disappointment is the different filter size and that I am not able to fit my grinder in the body for storage.
