At home, I use the XL (less brewing more coffee) the clear and glass /aluminum one. I agree with you, not a major diff between clear and glass versions. I like using the glass with my Prismo and paper filters cuz it holds a little more water than clear, I think clean up easy and outcome is delicious. I lucked out and was able to place my preorder for premium on top of aeropress having a Black Friday / holiday sale and got it for about $130 with shipping, so looking out their many deals that aeropress has is definately the way to go. The Aeropress is such an elegant coffee maker; I love the simplicity of popping out the coffee puck, how little paper it uses, and how forgiving it is in making a decent cup without much skill. I’ve had my Aeropress for over 5 years and while it’s going strong it won’t last a lifetime. A full on glass and metal version will so it’s a completely fair price. BUT, I think a full stainless steel version would have been better. It can be completely made of thin plate steel like the metal v60 and use laser markings on the inside. Doesn’t even need to be dual wall, just include a neoprene sleeve or something for the heat. Here’s hoping they actually make one.
@PaelorianАй бұрын
AeroPress says the Premium is handwash-only "due to it's handmade nature". But stainless steel and glass are the most dishwasher-friendly of materials. So what's up with that? I'd just disassemble it and put the glass and steel parts in the dishwasher. I'd handwash the aluminum and silicone parts, although the right dishwasher and detergent could handle them. I don't think a regular dishwasher puts hard wear on glass or steel as robust as these parts are. The glass isn't especially thin or uneven, and the steel looks like a thick piece of stainless steel. I wouldn't put a plastic brewer in the dishwasher, so using a dishwasher with the glass and steel model is an appealing benefit for me. Great review. I feel like I know what I'm getting if I buy one now. Looks like one of the best plastic-free brewers. A French press is the cheapest way to go to avoid plastic. Every drip brewer I've ever seen has plastic touch the water, though some more than others. Moka pots are made of metal, traditionally aluminum which can react to the acidity of coffee but there are stainless and partially-glass mokas. Espresso is easy to make without plastic, it's usually just water passing through the coffee in a stainless steel portafilter. I like how in the AeroPress premium it looks like the water only ever touches glass and stainless steel (and optionally a paper filter), perhaps a silicone o-ring between the glass and steel. They didn't ruin it by having some plastic part soaking in the coffee, so this is a good option to avoid plastic leaching or microplastics. Easy to brew, as shown, and I like manual machines. The AeroPress is among the easiest of the manual machines for groggy coffee makers looking for simplicity, although some people will only ever use electric drip-coffee machines for the reason that they're the easiest to use.

For those worried about prolonged hot water contact with plastic leaching with the regular Aeropress, theres a fantastic solution I've been using with stellar results with an alternate brewing method using the original Aeropress. So simple and it's actually way more efficient than the regular way using a lot less grounds to get the same strength coffee. So simple, just boil enough water as if you were brewing to the 1.5 or 2.5 mark in the Aeropress but instead of putting it in the aeropress, just add about 1/2 to 3/4 scoop of grounds to a glass or stainless cup or 12-20 oz milk frothing pitcher and add the boiling water to the same vessel. What you're doing is brewing outside of the Aeropress in a non plastic container. The beauty of this method is you can leave the coffee brewing as long as you like and let it cool down to room temperature and get maximum extraction without bad flavors. Then after it has cooled, pour it into the Aeropress and press the cooled coffee. What you've made is a cooled down strong espresso type shot that had only a few seconds of contact time with the plastic. Now you just boil some water to add creamer to or steam some milk to dilute and bring the coffee back up to hot drinking temp. Seems to taste just as good as Brewing the regular way to me, if not better. The verdict is still out on that and I need to do more trials with various types of coffee. You can also use this method to Brew several batches in advance and store in the fridge for coffee concentrate always ready to use.

You should know that BPA free is just a marketing term, they use BPS of other BPx that is just as bad but the FDA doesn't have as many studies to say it's bad, in a few years when they have enough the manufacturers will simply move to the next BPx that's slightly different and the cycle goes on.

The original inventor is a true engineer. He did his own independent testing. He found the original Aeropress did not leak harmful chemicals. Temperatures just weren't high enough (up to 212F). BPA is very poorly soluable in water. The dangers of BPA are much higher for example, for people who regularly heat plastic food containers with oily foods so hot it melts the container (400+F). Even then. On top of all of this. Aeropress then switched to a BPA free plastic. If you really think this isn't being safe enough. You need to get off this Earth. The Earth is messy. Everything is a relative risk. BPA in the Aeropress, if you use it as directed, is lower risk than the highly addictive drug you're trying to consume in your coffee.
@KevinJDildonik3 ай бұрын
For anyone who needs help: One meaaure of toxicity of a chemical is called LD50. It's basically how much you'd need in a single dose to cause harm. BPA has an LD50 of 4 grams per kg of body weight (from mouse studies, which often do not translate to people). The world average male is somewhere around 80kg. So a man would have to eat 320grams of lab quality BPA in one sitting. Meaning ten whole heaping scoop of coffee beans would have to be directly converted to BPA, and eaten like breakfast cereal with fatty milk-because BPA is poorly soluble in water. And only then would you be at acute risk. The amount you get from your Aeropress isn't measured in grams or even milligrams. Assuming you just use Aeropress according to the manual and don't put it in the dishwasher (heating coils can get very hot). Your exposure from your Aeropress is measured in single atoms. You have more risk from the potassium in your bones, because the body naturally stores a form of potassium which is weakly radioactive. (edited because I did the math in reverse, BPA is much safer than even my original silly estimate.)
@Gengh133 ай бұрын
@@KevinJDildonik it's not about the lethal dose, it's about the hormonal effects, unfortunately not much is needed to affect the estrogen balance in males because its normally a very low concentration and the body uses it to determine the amount of testosterone it needs to produce. LD50 of lead can be around 4665 mg/kg but with much smaller doses you will get a lot of symptoms due to the effects in the nervous system. Biology is very complex and unfortunately things like LD50 and RDAs are just extremes that don't have any concept of health.

@@Gengh13 I think we still know too little about the long-term effects of exposure to plastics, which are everywhere. There are some concerns, for example the question why male fertility is on the decline, for example. I see two kinds of issues here: Toxins that may already be present in plastic, and toxins that plastic can accumulate over time. The latter is a concern with plastic junk in the ocean, for example, it is so full of toxins that it cannot be recycled anymore. As far as "BPA-free plastic" is concerned, I find it about as convincing as "asbestos-free cigarettes". -- I didn't make the last part up, the Kent brand did contain asbestos at one point.

I have a glass water bottle like this I've dropped many times without breaking. The outer covering has holes so you can see the water level and also makes it easier to touch. I woukd also keep using plastic for the plunger since that does not touch the beverage. The cap is great to keep as stainless but I think the flange could be made with plastic too. This would serve the purpose of keeping the beverage out of contact with plastic and keep weight down, make the brewer travel friendly and the price more reasonable, I'd love to see a glass body version for about $60-70 tops without the whole "premium" thing along with it.

I use an alternate brewing method with the original plastic Aeropress that has minimal contact time with the plastic that totally negates the need for this expensive glass one. See my other comment here that explains it in more detail, but you simply just brew the coffee OUTSIDE of the Aeropress in a separate vessel, let it cool down to room temp, and then quickly press it through the Aeropress. The coffee will then only have a few seconds of contact time with the plastic at a very cool temperature, not enough to have any significant plastic leaching. The beauty of this method is you can leave the coffee to brew as long as you like before pressing it and you get way better extraction. Only downside is if you want to make coffee quicker. You do have to get in the habit of planning ahead making your coffee. But you can still do it this way and let the coffee cool down for as little as 5-10 minutes before pouring into and pressing through the Aeropress and still have reasonably fast coffee with minimal plastic contact time.

I don’t mind the look or functionality of the original aeropress I have, but I want to cut down on plastic items especially when they are used with heat. For that price though, bring back the funnel. Also it seems like if you put the cold metal stirring stick in your hot coffee you might absorb some of the head? maybe not not noticeable.
@DellaStreet1233 ай бұрын
I switched to a steel French press and a steel pour-over set. I boil the water in a glass kettle. I'm aware that this microplastic shit is everywhere, but if you use a plastic kettle to boil your water, you dramatically increase the amount of microplastic in your water compared to freshly-drawn. I'm in favor of consciously enjoying coffee, and that works better if you aren't constantly thinking about plastic.

I am clumsy. The point of an aeropress as my brewer was its durability. It bounces and rolls nicely. So as pretty as glass looks its a no. Also I use the inverted method. Double no.

is there an aftermarket for sleeves or protection for this glass aeropress? seems like a naked iphone needing a simple bumper case or something. there are plenty of glass coffee brewing devices like french presses that have simple protective sparse sleeves or at least lip protection. if it is double walled then you could put foam, rubber, or even plastic on the exterior since it would not heat up and mitigate any microplastic contamination. inside the cylinder where the hot liquid will contact the wall is where it matters most. seems like they could just sell an accessory to protect it...

🤔🤔 I think I might buy this for traveling because taking my chemex it’s too big plus I’ve been looking at a press style French press or aero press but I didn’t like the original aero press I don’t want to buy anything made of plastic especially for my coffee, like what he’s saying about micro plastics I try to buy mostly glass for 95% of my drinks . Plus why should we support the companies to continue to use plastic for everything, I personally just made that choice when I had a glass bottle coke it brought back memories from when I was a kid then I started noticing my coffee ,water, soda ect was tasting a lot better in glass vs plastic I’m glad there are companies continue to offer glass options

Why not make it out of Stainless instead of glass? Also not sure about the aluminum
@peetiegonzalez18453 ай бұрын
I prefer my pressed coffee with a good dusting of microglass. Honestly, I fail to see any advantage over a simple French Press, Very nice stainless steel and/or copper versions of which can be had for about twenty bucks. Zero plastic, zero waste washable mesh filter. Heck, as a student I had a single-cup version that was way smaller than this thing, and thus more portable. Thanks for the review!
@highnrising3 ай бұрын
It has advantages over a French press. With the Aeropress, you force the water through the coffee grounds at high pressure, so you extract the flavor by force. A French press, extracts the flavor through immersion and takes several minutes. The pressing doesn't reall do very much.

Having recently watched a long and sad discussion about micro and nano plastics, I am really considering other ways of brewing coffee. Aeropress I have is not one of the early ones, but still... that´s two or three caps a day that probably hurt me... a bit but over the years it accumulates. The price of this one is steep, but I don´t buy every toy that comes to market.

Aeropress fanboy, love the look, not a fan of aluminum. If they had used stainless for the plunger and support collar I would have bought it even at double the price. But that would have made this even a more limited market then it is. 😢

The plunger on my Aeropress is wearing out after 3 years of daily use. It's started leaking in the most dangerous way, by spraying up in the air, at my face, if I don't press directly (and perfectly) straight down. If that's going to happen to the new Glass and metal one, then $150 really doesn't make sense. I really really want this to work as who isn't trying to reduce the plastic in their lives rn? But am I the only one who's had issues with the plunger?
@royyeldo54233 ай бұрын
You can buy replacement rubber pieces for your plunger direct from aeropress for like $10.

I'm excited for this Aeropress. I have never owned one because using plastic for anything heat related is a shitty idea. Not only can I taste it, I know the chemicals are leaching into the coffee. So if I end up getting one, I'll just be really careful.
@hammyjammies3 ай бұрын
I think it's really pricing itself out of the market. People who like the aeropress for travel and that will stick with the plastic ones, anyone who wants to reduce the amount of plastic in their life could get a non-plastic V60, metal pouring kettle and decent grinder just for the cost of the premium. Part of me thinks this is for enthusiasts only just based on it not really making sense even though I do see your point about reducing microplastics and waste, but I'd be going elsewhere if that was a concern.

@@DaddyGotCoffeeyes, and that’s why you should probably avoid regular usage of paper cups or aluminium/steel cans. also, it’s not the microplastics, as mentioned in the video, it’s the additives, stabilizers, oligomers and degradation products in your polypropylene that when in contact with hot liquids are considered endocrine disruptors. for more info (studies) search for ‘plastics endocrine disruptors’. p.s. there’s currently no scientific consensus about microplastics. technically, they should be inert. we’ll see…

I've been seeing the Aeropress premium popping up in my feed every now and then, and must say that I have reservations about owning this piece. To me an Areopress is meant to a be an affordable, versatile brewer that makes great coffee. Nothing more nothing less. In fact, I have a normal Go version and as someone who mainly brews for themselves, I'm happier with the smaller size of the Aeropress GO. It can take 200ml of water in with the inverted method, which in my opinion is plenty for one batch. Also, the plastic cup make me feel assured when flipping and pressing the thing. So given my aversion to the regular sized original Aeropress, this seems like an even worst offering. I get it, it's well made and ditches the plastic. But honestly, given it's fragility (if it breaks, that's it, no replacement glass chamber), the lack of usefulness (my Aeropress is my go-to travel brewer), and the high price, I just can't see why anyone would get one other than as a showpiece for their collection. At this point, instead of buying a boujee Aeropress one might as well get the Weber Workshops 'The Bird'.
@DaddyGotCoffee2 ай бұрын
I also have a bird and can say it gets a lot more use than the AP premium. It’s also significantly more expensive. But I hear you

Doesn't the flow control cap basically just catch the under extracted initial drippings inside of itself? So they are still there? Forgive my ignorance and laziness (I haven't gone to look yet) on this. I love the AeroPress and I have the XL model for my wife and I, but I never looked at the flow control cap. I do wonder if you can use the mesh filter screens for this.
@coreycannon45113 ай бұрын
No flow control cap for the XL, unfortunately. Fellow made the first flow control cap for the original Aeropress (I have one) called the Prismo. But unfortunately, no one seems interested in making a cap for the XL. Shame. It’s the only thing keeping me from buying the XL.
@JimJimmington-e8i3 ай бұрын
@@coreycannon4511 I guess that explains why I don't know much about the flow control cap. I went and read about it and to be honest, I will just stick with the inverted method to stop the dripping during the start of the brew. Having the capacity of the XL has been good for 2-3 people. It really does make some good coffee, though. I was shocked when I first got it because looking at it you would never guess it does as well as it does.
@coreycannon45113 ай бұрын
@@JimJimmington-e8i I really like the Prismo. I get the benefits of the inverted method without inverting, which means I can use my Aeropress to its full capacity. If Fellow or Aeropress ever build an XL sized version of the Prismo/Flow Control, I will definitely get an XL.
