I'm pairing this amp (Hong Kong version) with the Harbeth SHL5+ 40th and I couldn't be happier. This amp replaced the Rogue Sphinx V1 which was not bad at all, no complaints, but probably because the Kinki is a sort of dual mono design with twice the power, everything just sounds effortless and more detailed. Even ”corrected” the LR balance issue which I previously thought was caused by the room. I can't say the mids are any weaker or thinner than before, not in my set up at least.

Yes, and no. The manual directly mentions not using Tube base directly coupled pre-amps. Be cautious on this. Some versions have a speaker protection circuit to ensure you don't damage your speakers from a tube pre-amp engaged with the Kinki.
@richarddewar51685 жыл бұрын
I had the Kinki, it had so many problems: audible hum from the amp (not speakers) at a couple of meters away, way too high gain (even with low gain setting) for 87db speakers (i.e. on louder mastered CDs at night, when I listen more quietly, I wanted to lower the volume even when it was on Vol.1 so not possible). Volume Tracking when turning the volume knob was not linear - it would sometimes click down a volume notch when turning it up! Basically, if you're thinking of Kinki definitely don't buy it blind like I did. Vinshine refused to accept that any of these issues were a fault, but thankfully I managed to swap it for another brand of amp with the UK importer which works perfectly!

Sean, nice review. BTW, I had a chance to spend quite a bit of time with the Yamaha A-S2100 integrated amp. It is really an interesting unit. Music from it has the same black background and extraction of detail you describe in this review. It is also wonderfully smooth and easy to listen to, which I attribute to its MOSFET output stage. It is also beautifully built with polished wood side panels and VU meters on the front. However, in my system it had one glaring flaw that for me was a deal-killer. It is just under-powered. It offers only 90W per channel and I don't know how much current. The result was that music, while sounding qualitatively excellent (tone, detail, warmth, musicality, etc.), quantitatively was just a little lifeless. It sounded really good with Diana Krall, but when I put on Heart it was relatively staid. Not enough punch and dynamics. In short, it lacks balls. Too bad. I liked so much else about it.

Currently evaluating the EX-M7 which is the power amp version of the M1+. I think what you may be calling a “fuller” sounding midrange is the chesty, overly weighted midrange. The type you can feel vibrate your seat cushion like when the Fairfield Four performs “These Bones”. I dont like a “chesty” midrange. Its unreal. You’ll never experience that “fullness” with a real baritone seven feet away. I’m actually impressed that the EX-M7 presents vocals in a similar fashion to some high-end lower power amps while retaining power and authority in the low end. If anything, people who are used to the large number of brute amps available on the market may be surprised by its low end presentation. It will take some getting used to. I like it. I’m still under 25 hours of break-in but my initial impression is that its tone is indeed very pleasant. It sounds smooth and sweet, really nice on the ears. It playback triangles spectacularly. Cowbells come through with more detail than Im used to. Compared to a First Wart F8 that ir was swapped for, its got less micro detail which is the F8’s strength, and conversely, seems to be the M7s personality. Transient handling is promising. Its not boomy, and youre right its very accurate. It wont add weight (low frequencies) to recordings but deliver full control bass when its there. It may be a bit unforgiving. Im getting a bit of upper midrange glare on some stuff. And sibilance in one particular live recording. These seem to be from tracks. I’ll try to reposition my speakers a bit to address that, but thats really more nit picking than a real draw back. Ive got two more weeks of break-in to go before I get the 300 hours its says in the manual. After which, I’ll sit down seriously to listen to it.
@veniceog2 жыл бұрын
After two weeks, the amp let loose. This is definitely an amp that benefits for break-in. Your absolutely right on your review. It is very transparent while slightly subdued in the highs. The bass handling is exceptional, strong, without being overbearing. Its greatest traits are the transient handling, the way instruments jump out and surprises you. The imaging is also exceptional. It presents sound in a startling way, creating a sense of space that Ive never experienced in the same way. The trait is seductive. Lastly, the tonality of the midrange is very sweet. It will float passages in the air that is absolutely engaging. Cant get enough of it. Highly recommended.

Great review. I have the 1st version and was one of the first, stateside, to buy one. This beast measures ruler flat from 8Hz-26Khz and the designer is fan of Swiss amp design: 10-150khz (+/-3db). Never had such a full and wide soundstage that's every bit as powerful at the edges as the middle. Depth and layering is excellent. Dynamics are off the scale as well. Yes, the knobs aren't to my liking when it comes to feel but I don't ever really touch them: I use the remote. As for the midrange, I think that different speakers and/or cabling will have that midrange you're looking for. I have this paired with JBL 4319 monitors and use Cabledyne Virtuoso speaker cables (no longer in business, alas!) and I have all the midrange I need as it's just so natural. If anything, this is a most neutral measuring and sounding integrated.

Ok, I'll spare the jokes in this one. Seriously though, this appears to be a nice piece. While I am not that crazy about the looks, there is still an appeal to it for me. The build is what I like about this unit, super solid! Sean, I'm glad you did a compare between the Parasound Hint 6 and the Kinki EX-EM1+. I was hoping you would! I agree with what you said about their strengths and weaknesses comparatively. I was thinking that while watching the review of the Kinki. I do think thought that Parasound would still dominate slightly if the comparison was the P6/A23+ or 21+ separates to the Kinki, but then again, that would not have been a fair comparison. I'm glad I am not in the market for an integrated, otherwise judging by sound description I would have maybe had a hard time deciding between the two. Although, while I do like detailed and balanced sound (I want to hear everything in a recording), I would not call myself a purest because I am not afraid of tone controls/EQ, I'd much rather have them than not, even though I rarely ever use them. I also like to have basic features such as an easy way to select source inputs and such rather than click or dial through a knob in a menu. Yeah, ok, I appreciate remotes too.

No Audiolab, arcam, Cambridge, amps are good enough for serious audiophiles like me, who crave, clarity, detail resolution, and speed from their amplifiers abilities. Not even cyrus or naim either. I live in the UK too, and I value clarity, speed, and detail resolution, and none of those brands can match my two biamped 1995 avi s2000mi integrated amplifiers for that such very reason. I have listened to every single one of our UK brands amplifiers. Not even any of the new uk amps also, can compete. My two avi s2000mi integrated amplifiers biamped, can power atc scm150's no problem. One amp for mid and treble, and the second amp for the bass. These amps were designed also using the atc scm100 and scm150 3 way monitors as the reference loudspeakers. So you get my view I hope, from this perspective. My two amplifiers biamped together, have a total of 350 Watts into 4 ohms, and can output 750 Watts into 2 ohms between the two of them. Not even the mighty naim nap 300 and 500 can compete either. If you Look up the prices of those two particular naim amplifiers, they are pretty expensive bits of kit, and no way in my book are they worth their respective prices. As regards clarity, detail resolution, and speed, my two amps biamped, show those two naim amps a clean pair of heels and show them the door.

Thanks! In a power-efficient circuit, you don't necessarily need a huge reservoir of filter caps in order to achieve good dynamic range. Small caps tend to be a bit more efficient than their beer-can sized counterparts. That said, there is something awesome about big ole' caps.

Your thoughts on the ex-m1+ paired to Dynaudio 20i's?
@rokodrago4 жыл бұрын
Great Review, i have the Kinki paired with PMC Twenty5 26 (86db) which suggests 50-300 watt amplification, although i like it very much, sometimes i wish a fuller/meatier sound and thinking on to upgrade the Kinki, in one part Kinki has just released the EX-M1 & Ex-M1 with some interesting upgrades, this is From KINKI: "The new EX-M1 sounds calmer due to the quieter background. Also has more drive due to the higher power (400va vs 300va) encapsulated transformers and 50% more of the capacitors reservoir. There is also improvement to the amp circuitry, preamp and input selector boards"...in the other hand some people on the PMC facebook forum gave me some suggestions where NAIM Supernait 3 (80w), Hegel H390 (250w), Hint 6 (160w) showed up among others, i wish you can share your thoughts on this...also how good is the Parasound JC 5 & JC PB ? Regards

Hi Miguel, I also have the PMC Twenty5.26, since 1 month and I'm currently paring them with a Naim 5si with (official) 2 x 60 watts at 8 ohms. OK, that seems (too) little, but the results are very good (and pretty darn loud) up to the 10 o' clock mark on the amp, and at the 11 o' clock mark you'll hear it run out of steam. So very good, but for party volume-levels: no. I also tried my PMC's at home with a Musical Fidelity M6Si integrated amp (which belongs to a friend of mine), which seems to pair extremely good with the PMC's plus then you can feed the power the speakers realy deserve. Very natural sounding, 'full' and very powerful/in control of the speakers (woofer!). Certainly a recommendation, no doubt! So I understand the Kinki EX-M1 is not a perfect match with the PMC's? Have you tried other amps in the meantime? I certainly would like to hear from you... Thanks!

@@maxvdl1262 Actually i like the pairing of the PMC with the Kinki, both the 25 26 and Kinki are fast and transparent and with some recording it can get too much sometimes, with good recordings the sound is amazing, i sold my Kinki and im waiting for the NEW KINKI M7 amp + Denafrips Athena Preamp, which should sound even better, deeper, fuller and bigger...well see...i will let you know, what is your email ?

@@HoomanR17 The result of Athena + Kinki M7 is much better that with the M1, M7 has the same attributes of the M1 but much much higher, Hi, mid and low freq are more extended and controlled and less fatiguing and Athena is kinda of in the warm side but also very detailed and musical so the combo get the best of both worlds, sound is bold image is big, noise is super low, you need to give each of these devices time, i would say 300hr, i used to had a Hegel P20 +H20 combo that retails for more than 8k and this Athena+M7 combo is way better, i hope this helps

In the nearfield environment, I like the pairing very much. In a more traditional 2-channel setting, I prefer the sound of a warmer, more intimate sounding amp with Harbeth. Having said that, I have no idea how it would pair to the Compact 7's. If he wants the sound to be cleaner and tighter - then this will get the job done in spades!

Get some atc scm 3 way loudspeaker monitors, at minimum atc scm40, upwards, with two kinki integrated amps. One amp for mid and treble duties and the second amp for bass duties. In other words biamping, and would not run out power and current capacity, and retains the clarity, speed, detail and resolution of the amplifiers capabilities. Those boenicke loudspeakers are terrible performers for their price, and ridiculous in price for what you get in sound quality in return for their price. I have no idea why you would like such a terrible loudspeaker, when there is far better loudspeaker performance for their price, out there in loudspeaker land.

Those atoll heatsinks on the inside of the amplifier, are only just large enough for say an amplifier that would be operated at only a very low few watts just in a class A input stage alone, if it was an input stage on a normal class A operated amplifier, and that's not even taking into account large heatsinks needed for an output stage.. I definitely would not be happy with an integrated amplifier with heatsinks that small for a so called 120 watt amplifier. Those inside heatsinks are a bit of joke for a 120 watt amplifier, especially with the size of those transformers on the inside, the heatsinks are a pure joke. You should not have skipped on your amplifier just because of a headphone output, you should have bought a seperate headphone amplifier for the headphone job, and a proper amplifier for powering loudspeakers. That intoll IN200 should be called the zero fidelity amplifier, HAHA. Probably its just good enough for some headphones, but transformers that large for a headphone out, is a hum magnet for a headphone output in my book, they should be shielded for a start, and the amp needs to be shielded from mains pollution for a delicate dedicated headphone amp. Look at the size of the the heatsinks of an atc p1 150 watt class ab power amplifier, and then tell me everything is alright with the atoll IN200 as an amplifier to properly power good decent loudspeakers. Why do people buy loudspeakers and other products, just because of some reviews, I will never understand, because the buchardt loudspeakers are very poor in sound quality, and if you think they sound good and real, then you haven't heard some proper loudspeakers I'm afraid. Good music is falling on deaf ears, with most people buying because of some overated review related product, just like the kef ls50, which is another bad and overated loudspeaker also, reviewers say they are the best thing since sliced bread, they are most certainly and definitely not the best sounding loudspeakers since sliced bread at all, no where near at all, not even for a standmount loudspeaker full stop.
