That is bloody outrageous that they’ve gone in for this kind of revisionism with regards Mick Taylor. It’s as if none of them can accept the simple truth that their best albums were made with him in the group. That is really poor show.
@flyingburritobro684 жыл бұрын
Patrick Crowther ? What revisionism? He’s played with them a lot on recent tours as a guest. There is a photo of him in the GHS reissue -if that’s what you are talking about. He’s played with Keith on some solo stuff, he’s played with Ronnie on solo stuff. He was inducted in the hall of fame with them. What else does he need for being in a band for 5 1/2 years out of the bands 57 year career? Very important member and great guitarist during my favorite period of the Stones but he is not overlooked at all
@patrickcrowther91954 жыл бұрын
flyingburritobro68 I don’t think a few appearances on stage with them really redress what he’s owed enough. One photo of him in the booklet (which is insulting, given his huge contribution to that album). Also the band were apparently very mean with him after he left the band and didn’t really give him any financial help when he was living in pretty dire conditions. With all their millions it would have been good of them to recognise his contribution in some way financially. Maybe they have in recent years, but I remember reading a piece on Mick Taylor years ago which pointed out quite clearly that he was living a life a million miles away from that of a glamorous rock star. I think the problem is that it would be quite insulting to Ronnie Wood if they were honest and admitted in public that Mick Taylor was the best musician ever to play with the band and helped shape all their greatest music in the ‘album’ era (post Brian Jones).
@flyingburritobro684 жыл бұрын
Patrick Crowther Your opinion cool. I love his work in the Stones and those are my favorite albums currently. It changes as I’ve been a fan of theirs for coming coming close to 50 years. For some reason Taylor and Jones fans think those two are shortchanged. Taylor quit in the midst of heroin addiction at the time. Jones was fired and bought out. The band carried on both times. What else can they do for him. BTW the Sticky Fingers reissue has an additional 7 photos of Taylor vs the initial release 😎

My favourite Stones album, as weird as that may be. I own the 1994 Virgin Remaster and the one from the 14-disc Remasters boxed set of their 1971-2005 albums (which I luckily got for crazy cheap.) Don't know about all of the reissues, but the one thing that bothers me (and not many people seem to talk about this) is that the '94 Virgin remaster is the only one, to my knowledge, to feature Star Star in its full explicit glory. In other reissues, there was some silly effect used to try and hide certain lyrics in parts of the song ("I bet you keep your p***y clean", and another featuring a reference to actor John Wayne.) Not ready to buy this, at least not right now, but I do wonder if this 2020 remix gives us Star Star the way it was meant to be heard (barring the fact that it's remixed.)

As a long time Stones I rank Goats Head Soup among their best work. I also think that you made a valid point about there being a certain 'musicality' to the music speaking of musicality It's a shame that the booklet doesn't illustrate Mick Taylor's presence at the sessions more or at all (he also was invisible on song writing credits all too often..hmmm . I have heard that they didn't invite him to the big exhibition they had a few years ago (he wasn't too happy about that) and on the subject of Taylor it was during this period that he became disenchanted, unhappy and creatively stifled with being a Rolling Stone and quit a few years later (and for the music released after - the law of diminishing returns and although I liked a few things here and there nothing compares to the Taylor (or Jones) years at all. I like the mixture of styles and moods on this album- Dancing with Mr. D is a decadent and spooky opener. Angie is just a great song and one of their best ballads. Coming Down Again sounds heartfelt and mournful, Winter just weaves beautified but jaded soundscape that is unique and one of two songs that Keith actually sings well (You Got the Silver being the other). Can You Hear the Music although continually underrated is one of the true gems of this collection and recalls a Brian Jones in Joujoka /magical feel... the last song Star** just brilliant and the cherry on top and perhaps a gesture or counter point statement simular to the dreamy Moonlight Mile put at the end of Sticky Fingers? Also I have to say I wasn't really impressed with the Scarlet song in general and perhaps I expected something fantastic because of Page's brilliant musicianship and aura. JMO.

Have to say I love the remix. Giles Martin did a fantastic job. For me the original mix always sounded dull, which took away the polish of the songs. Not only that, some of Mick Taylor’s best work too. Love the sound of the 12 string guitar on Angie. It just jumps out at you in the remix!

Thanks for the review! The very first time I bought this album I absolutely hated it. I wondered why did they make this kind of record after the good time rockin' Exile On Main Street. But now I think this album represents the Rolling Stones at their most mature. Overall it's quite mellow with lots of funk/groove style coupled with soul ballads and boogie/blues kind of stuff. But as Pete says musicality is incredible. Songs like 100 Years Ago, Silver Train, Hide your Love, Winter and Star Star will always be in my top 20! The live disc Brussels Affair also for me is the proof that the Stones are one of the the top live blues-rock acts of the early 70's along with Allman Brothers Band, Humble Pie, Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac and Rory Gallagher.

Not a big fan of this remix, Giles Martin cleaned the vocal bits, but that dirt was part of the fascination. @rookmaster75024 жыл бұрын
Unless there are serious problems with the original mix, I'm not a big fan of remixes. Especially if the intent is to make a classic album to sound more "modern". It would be like painting over a Picasso artwork to give it more detail and pop, or rewriting "Moby Dick" to incorporate modern language and phrasing.
@djhrecordhound43914 жыл бұрын
@@rookmaster7502 Oh you mean those 1990s remixes? I agree, overall they suck. Some labels made only those mixes available at the time. The first "Best Of Free" CD by Island, the Aerosmith "Sweet Emotion" remix that a local rock station beat to death, or Warner Bros with ZZ Top's entire catalogue. Big drums, compression out the wazoo, and too many bad effects on everything else at once.
@rookmaster75024 жыл бұрын
@@djhrecordhound4391 I mean remixes in general. If the original artist wants to do a special Dance Remix version (such as Bowie did a few times), then fine. But otherwise, the remix is only some engineer's interpretation of what he/she thinks the mix should sound like. I prefer to listen to the original mix - warts and all. Besides, I find that many of the recent remixes I've listened to have way to much exaggerated high end, resulting in harsh sibilance in the vocals and overpowering hi-hats.

I'm not big on those remixed albums stuff. it's almost as if there's something missing from the original mix. it's hard to explain. the feel of it is not the same.

The Sticky Fingers reissue isn’t remixed.

The last Stones album I bought. It's Only Rock And Roll album was ok. As a huge Stones fan, I think Goat's Head Soup was their last great album.

Love the Stones, but this was the album, I couldn’t really get on with so I sold it.

GHS was the beginning of their artistic decline.

@@mutant_blues lol, thier artistic decline? thats your opinion you know. Some Girls is their best selling album, ever heard Tatoo You....wow

@@PolPotsPieHole I'm not talking about sales, charts or popularity, but about music. Is Some Girls Really Compared to Sticky Fingers or Let it Bleed ??? As for Tattoo You, it's a good collection of older songs and outtakes, some of ... 1972!

Some Girls is a big album...After banquet-bleed-fingers &exile i think this is the best. .

Disagree with some of you here. I really like Goats Head Soup and the next one, Its Only Rock and Roll (But I Like It). I went off the Stones with Black and Blue, Some Girls, Tattoo You etc so I agree with the rest of what was said. I do like the last 2 albums with Mick Taylor though and I think they are underrated. Not quite as good as Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile but still part of their golden period imo.

i luv all stones albums but this ones a bit slow at times and a bit more piano laden probably scrape in my top 12🤘🏻
