Glad to see this book spotlighted! Even though I had issues with it, I agree that it's a lot more ambitious and literary than any other horror I've read. I love how Simmons pulls from romanticist novels to create a horror allegory of man vainly trying to conquer 'nature,' complete with its own mystical personification of what nature can do to you if you take it lightly (the whale in Moby Dick, the monster in Frankenstein, the Tuunbaq in Terror). I was SO immersed in the survival elements, especially the meticulous detailing of survival--and every time you get a punctuation of pure action like the New Years scene, it's so awesome! I just felt the really belabored exposition at the end, a few of the slowest parts, and the weird stuff with Crozier's mind kinda hurt it for me. Anyway, great review! :D

Very well said! There were elements that could have tightened up the pacing, overall, but the cosmic Man’s Hubris vs. Nature’s Fury themes really worked for me.
