This box set is really fantastic and listening to those 6 versions of Rock bottom in a row is an incredible experience! Michael put all of his genius into those solos, I've always thought that the one on the classic version album was the ultimate Rock bottom showcase, but I've pleasantly discovered that the solo from the Kenosha show is even more jaw droppingly performed !! Long live Meister Schenker and UFO! 🤘🤘

Was waiting for you to do this Pete! Quite simply the greatest live album of all time. Nothing even comes close in my opinion. Mine arrived here in the U.K. as soon as it was released and I’d no hesitation in listening to each concert in turn. Some subtle differences from each show and nice to hear On with the Action. Amazing to think they played six nights in a row. Them guys worked damm hard. Would have been nice if they’d included a dvd documentary with band interviews.

You never forget your first. AC/DC opening for UFO was my first concert. Both bands on tour supporting live albums. “If You Want Blood...” and “Strangers in The Night” . Standing in line for general admission seating with a bunch of long hairs. I remember that experience as much as the music. AC/DC opened with Riff Raff. It was LOUD! UFO - Phil Mogg getting mad at the crowd for a beachball incident and Paul Chapman playing all over the stage...

Hi Pete and Butch. Got this on release in November ( I'm in the UK). Also got the original in January 1979 on the day of release. Difficult to say with any accuracy but I reckon I may have listened to this album more than any other in my life ( it's certainly up there). The original is probably the definitive version although the Kenosha show is my favourite of the others, they are absolutely on fire on that in my opinion. Lots of repetition obviously (my wife thinks I'm crazy to listen to basically the same songs!). You either get it or you don't I guess. Another great show guys 😎

Hey Pete and Butch - great review - I got this back in October cus I had pre-ordered it from amazon. Also ordered an awesome clear vinyl release of the album proper. What a monster of a release - so cool. So after I got mine I decided I was going to get one for a friend of mine for Christmas and, lo and behold, just like you said it was 'out of print', selling for a hundred bucks on Ebay. Crazy. But this kind of thing has been going on all year with vinyl releases and historical box sets and the like. From what I've read on number of websites, this is not only due to releases being limited, but also due to the pandemic. Apparently a lot of the manufacturers of these sorts of things are short on resources and short on staff... all leading to more limited runs than usual of stuff, and an inability to fill re-orders when stock sells out fast. This is why we've seen this scenario play out all year long... release comes out, sells out, prices skyrocket on the after-market, then the item shows back up for regular price again a little later. Added to that everyone is home and jonesing for stuff to watch and listen to, creating even more demand. So blame it on the gosh darn COVID pandemic, and hopefully fans won't panic-buy so quickly and give their money to the Ebay pirates! Crazy times we're in. But back to the important point... UFO ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!! PS: If anyone missed it, there was a great reissue of Phenomenon last year on CD and vinyl. Also awesome, amazing, and worth every penny if you can still get it!! PSS: based on the awesome Phenomenon and Strangers reissues, I am praying for Force It, No Heavy Petting, Lights Out and Obsession!!

I concur on the hope for anniversary/deluxe versions of the other classic UFO albums. I don't have the Phenomenon 50th anniversary release but hope to find it somewhere. It looks like a winner. There is a plug for it on UFO's homepage but it's from a company that I've never heard of.

Michael’s playing during this time was at such a high level it’s almost without equal in the annals of live rock music. I saw UFO on this tour at the Tower theater in Philadelphia sandwiched between REO Speedwagon and Molly Hatchet. As a guitarist myself I spent the whole set focused on Michael with binoculars. What I took away was not speed (he was not into playing fast that night) but taste, restraint, melody and above all god like vibrato. Today he has adopted a more legato shred like approach to soloing which is fine but my go to Michael is the blues scale based Strangers in the Night Schenker. Will be ordering this box set thanks for the review and for sparking my great memories of that night long ago at the Tower theater.

I got this on vinyl when it came out early 1979, 42 years ago. Always been one of my faves. About a decade on I bought the first CD which copied the original tracklist. Then, much later, the remastered CD with 2 extra tracks and the altered tracklist. It took some getting used to hearing Hot 'n' Ready instead of Natural Thing after the opening announcement of "Hello Chicago...". And end November 2020, just before the shops had to close because of lockdown, I was able to grab this box of the shelves of my local record store. They had stocked just one and it had arrived the day before. This album in all its different guises was awesome, still is and most likely always will be. Top three together with Purple's Made in Japan and Allman Bros. at Fillmore East.

Great review of the greatest live hard rock album of all time. I had ordered my copy of this fantastic box set on Nov. 21st from a retailer through Amazon UK because it was the only place I could find it. $49 plus shipping and NY sales tax... all in it was $64. I got an email on Nov.23rd it had shipped and should arrive between Dec. 4th to 25th. I waited till January 9th to contact seller and they claimed it had definitely shipped on 11/23.They ended up refunding my money and I happened to find it through a shop in Kentucky on ebay that day. I ordered it and got it about a week later. I was going to reorder a copy a few days later as a gift for my brother and it was sold out. I've been watching many of your shows for the last year and really enjoy most of the content and discussions. I really like the Hudson Valley Squares shows as well. I'm about the same age as you guys and have very similar stories about discovering all the great music back in the day. Keep up the great discussions... Oh, and Butch is right about the slide intro part being edited in on I'm a Loser on the original release. And to my ears it also sounds like Phil may have overdubbed some vocals as well. Anyway thanks! Peace!

Glad to see you covered this release, Pete. Like you, it took me awhile to get a copy of this but I'm sure glad that I did! I enjoyed both your comments on the release and totally agree that even though it's essentially the same set-list played over and over (with some variations), it is nonetheless a worthwhile experience for any UFO fan. I reviewed this on a seller's site and said basically the same thing...it's fun to listen to each track and figure out which one made it onto the "Strangers In the Night" double album. I likened it to playing hard-rock, "Where's Waldo!" Nevison totally added a few bits and pieces as you guys also noticed: the slide intro to I'm A Loser was totally thrown in there as were additional keyboard fills on Love to Love (to simulate the strings section). For the life of me I can't understand why Mother Mary and This Kid's were added in later as studio tracks with live audience fills. I loved those songs on the original and was a bit saddened to learn that all these years, what I thought were great live tracks, were in fact, studio tracks recorded after the tour. Having heard the various concerts that went into SITN, I have to wonder why Hot 'n' Ready and On With the Action weren't on the original release; I think those tracks sound pretty good each night! Bottom line: this proves that UFO could bring it every night especially in their so-called "heyday." They certainly deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame more than most groups that are in there. No hits but HIGHLY influential + longevity.

UFO played a lot of shows at the now long gone Chicago Amphitheater. I think they wore that place out. You said they included a photo of Paul Chapman in the box set. I don't understand the "meh" reaction to Pack It Up and Go. It's one of my favorite UFO songs, and it's smoking on these live versions too (although some are better than others). The Cleveland show has kind of a slower grinding vibe to it, which is cool. And the Chicago version is just fantastic -- Phil is killing it on that take!

Having watched this video - which I was hoping for for a while and it's great, thanks SoT and co-host - I took out the box again and gave the Louisville Gardens CD a spin. I don't believe this has come up in the comments yet, but I believe a substantial chunk of the tracks of the original album came from Louisville. We know that Nevison used the crowd noise from Chicago and that the liner notes say that the tracks for the original vinyl double album were recorded in Chicago and Louisville. Personally I couldn't immediately identify any of the Chicago tracks as definitely having been used on he original album. So...were only songs from Louisville used on the original album? The Louisville CD sure sounds very familiar. Ideas anyone?

I had the 8-Track and then the album? Whoa....I'm kinda old. But I still Rock....in my rocking chair, mostly. Aahhh. UFO. Saw em' in 75 and 95 w/Schenker and 84 w/Tonka...twice that year. The second time Phil was depressed or hungover and couldn't remember the words to Lights Out. Magic and comic tragedy. Just inches away from mega stardom and....but we've got our memories. Amen.

Not to get TOO off the UFO subject here, but I have to say, if you like the sound of Michael's playing, John Norum ( also a HUGE Schenker fan! ) is the only guitarist I can think of that plays with that similar style/feel of Michael Schenker and Randy Rhoads with that seamless blend of Rock/Classical/Blues tastiness and a lot of heart.

A live version of On With The Action was released here in the UK as the B side of the Doctor Doctor single drawn from Strangers In The Night. Strangers is my favourite live album, the whole band, Schenker in particular is "on fire". Sorry, can't agree with you guys about Cherry. Great song to my ears well performed and it does add dynamics to the set. UFO was always about light and shade.

I've just listened to the Louisville version of "Love to Love" and I dare to say that the final guitar solo (one of my all time favorite) is included in the original double live album although the song as a whole wasn't. What do you think? By the way, thanks for the show; "Strangers in the Night" is my favorite live album ever. 👌👌👍👍😉😉 Edit. The guitar solo of "Love to Love" in the Wisconsin show is almost as amazing as in the original live album, which I think was extracted from the Louisville show. Is slightly different but furious and full of emotion. Listen to it, is blistering 😃😃🤘🤘

@@agr7879 Chrysalis records had a lot to do with them not being bigger IMO. They didn't promote the band enough (or at all), their pre-Lights out records were not well produced, and it sounds like they had distribution problems as well. If you go to a record store looking for a specific album and it isn't there, you just buy something else. Judging by the availability of this box set, it seems not much has changed at that company.

@@mmk7340 True, that was my understanding as well. Though poor management and Schenker leaving also played there part. Not only did they deliver outstanding albums but they also worked their butts off in the late 70’s early 80s, constantly touring especially in America. It’s the biggest travesty in rock and roll in my opinion.

I picked up the new vinyl release and right before Lights Out on side 3 there is a thumping sound with each rotation that sounds like a pressing error (only for the first few seconds of side 3). HEY DUDES! I found this in an interview compilation that included the producer's comments.....It says which live recordings arent on the original album "However, certain ‘fixes’ were made. In order to accommodate four sides of vinyl, Nevison was forced to rearrange the running order of the set as it had been played. Two of the songs that appear on the album - Mother Mary and This Kid’s - were also re-recorded in the studio afterwards and overdubbed with crowd noise from the tour". “Some people will say: ‘Oh, then it’s not a real live album,’” says Andy Parker. “But we set up the gear like we’d have done at a gig and played the damned songs. It really was as live as you could get.”

Damn it , I'll have to see if I can get hold of this - have streamed it and have the official bootleg box set with the Cleveland show on it but now after your review, I think - no I know - I need the physical copy. Dont know why there have been calls for Cherry not to have been on the album though, as it wasnt on the original but is on the remastered expanded edition along with Hot and Ready - though I'd have preferred Pack it up and Go rather than Cherry to be honest, and it took a long time to get used to the 'proper' running order on that expanded CD. I also had the Doctor Doctor single with On with the Action on the B side which was the main reason I bought and that was also included in a compilation called 'Time to Rock - best of singles a's and b's.
