Reviewing All 38 Pokémon e-Reader Minigames - Rose-Tinted: Pokemon eCard Games (Game Boy Advance)
When I was a kid, I was completely obsessed with Pokemon, my GBA and my e-Reader. While I had many Pokemon cards from the e-Card era, I only successfully played a few of the minigames. When I got into emulation during high school, I was able to explore a lot of GBA games I had missed out on previously, but due to the nature of it being an accessory, I assumed exploring the e-Reader further would be a pipe dream
I was wrong.
Sometime around September of 2020, I discovered that the e-Reader was emulatable in mGBA and 99% of all existing e-Reader dot codes had been dumped online. The fact this is a reality is simply amazing to me. Please join me on this in-depth look at the 28 Pokemon minigames exclusive to the e-Reader, and the cards required to access them.
Covering this topic fulfills a personal dream for me, so I appreciate anyone that watches this video. Hopefully, I answered questions for a lot of others too.

I always wanted the ereader because my friend that had it lied and said that he got all the mythical and rare pokemon in ruby and sapphire with it but he just had a gameshark lol its funny to think that he was trying to lure me into buying a nintendo product for no reason, maybe he was disappointed

I had no idea that some of the e-card Pokemon cards had exclusive attacks or Poke-Powers tied to them. I wonder if these are the reason why the e-cards are typically seen as a bit underpowered compared to sets that came before or after, since everything isn't printed on all of the cards. It'd be cool to have a way to play the e-cards with their e-card additions in a client or something.

I think when I bought mine it was on discount and that was pretty much the only reason I got it. I think we picked it up for like 30 bucks and I just wanted it cuz I wanted the Pokemon cards inside

I am currently multiple years into my vertical dot code e-reader card collection and I refuse to give this video a watch until I finally catch 'em all. I'm very excited to see this once I get all the cards tho! I'm currently around halfway there.

Amazing Video! 💯 I felt like the only kid that had an e-reader growing up so its cool to see others who had a similar experience. I personally really loved this thing. Ever since I played that first Machop minigame, I was hooked. I had a good amount of cards that unlocked the various construction modes and 1 of the animations, but it was literally heartbreaking as a kid not having the full sets for the minigames. Even as a kid who got way more pokemon cards than the average person at the time, I think requiring 6 or 7 specific cards was a huge ask. One thing that really killed this feature was that Expedition, Aquapolis and Skyridge are some of the lowest printed sets of Pokemon ever. If you missed that window where one of your local stores had it, completing those minigame sets was impossible. I think my fave part of these is the underrated BGMs. Those tunes are engrained in my memory to this day (especially the one at 46:16) Thanks for the amazing watch! subbed! :D

Great video covering a topic I'm all too fond of this day and age! I loved using the battle E-cards with my Copies of Ruby and Sapphire, and still have a blast using the art cards for my copy of Pokemon Channel on the Gamecube to this day! Thanks for posting this!

Wow! Thank you so much, I've been taking a deep dive into e-Reader a fond accessory I had in my past. When I was young, I had one, the only games I remember having were Golf and Air Hockey. Then I used mine a bunch with pokemon. The only game I ever I played was the one it came with with with Machop. How the heck was I to ever figure out what other cards I needed let alone trade or track them down. I don't want to emulate it, I want to play on my Gamecube Gameboy Player, through my component cables into my PVM CRT. Really great set up for Mario Party E! So given that, I am considering looking into what it would take to print my own reproduction's of the 3 sets with games as well as the 6 sets of Ruby/Sapphire cards. There is a pretty good tutorial on how to do it here on KZbin, you just need a printer that can do photo paper. Or thanks to you I can cherry pick the ones I want to try to re-print! I like: Flower Power, Dream Eater, Mighty Tyranitar, Sneak and Snatch, Ditton LeapFrog, and Night Flight. Also where is the link to your other channel? You should have that in your description :))

Nothing E Reader was sold in Europe what so ever so any content locked to them was lost though games like Dragon Quest 9 on DS had whole Extra Dungeons with bosses from older games in the series. But they made them like Event pokemon eg MEW so you had to be in a place on a certain date to get them or share them though the map sharing service which you left the game on in standby in your DS and it picked up data off other players doing the same so like the street pass function on 3DS but just for one game. Youc ould just gameshark the unlock uncontent since it was all on the cart itself. Konami tried making a E Reader like device for Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Duel Transer on Wii in 2010 but the reader was only sold in japan and scraped for the western version. But they is no footage of it begin used anywhere and it just used regular cards but not any Holo ones so seemed kinda useless. Though the Yu-Gi-Oh! Tag Force games on PSP had a simlar feature. In the game menus they is a option that works like the Monster Rancher games where you remove the UMD insert another one then Put games UMD in and it generates 3 copies of a certain card. You had to use ealier copys of Tag Force games to get the God cards playable in them.

@@PSPMan Australia is counted as Europe and UK for video games so the Pal region. so any game bought there will work on UK and Europe consoles. Starfy DS and wario Ware Twisted on GBA are two Nintendo developed games that was sold in Australia but never in Europe or UK though.

I feel like this would've been far more successful if it had done something in game for the pokemon games, even though the Ereader needed to be in the gameslot to work and all, but they could've had quite a hit back in the day if it worked that way. I mean Pokemon Stadium was a fantastic hit since it had features that tied to the pokemon games, like being able to actually play a pokemon game on the TV. I remember loving that feature so much, seeing it on the TV and not on a dimly lit gameboy color was the best. It'd be awesome if they could bring that back with a new system or whatever, perhaps try to fit the amiibo reader onto cards to be able to use the scan feature.

@@PSPMan thx, i found it. They are named with numbers so its hard to found what I want (I did a lot of trial and error with the emulator) for now doesn't work because the ink slip on the paper (I'm using the 10x15 standard glossy one) but I will find a way

just use mgba and load the raw code data in. its an option in the emulator. its what i did for this video i would never print these out and try and do it physically

When Pokémon made the Celadon Game Corner unplayable in Let's Go because of the age rating and simulated gambling, they should have replaced the gambling machines with arcades where you could play some of the Pokémon e-Reader games. Specifically the ones without Gen 2 Pokémon.

This is a really great video and I'm very happy that someone is covering this topic. As a current collector for the e-readers, I found this very helpful with its information. But there was one thing I couldn't help but notice. At the 1:20 Mark when explaining the ex team magma versus team aqua set your correction wasn't completely needed I could be wrong but there is a Squirtle in this set that has the dot code making the set have 9 dot code cards.

Yes, but thats not the same as the e-Reader. No$GBA has been around for a long time, and I remember back when I looked in high school it was the only one that had the capability I believe. The e-Reader emulation with card scanning support is still fairly new.

Can you please make a Tutorial how e reader works on mgba, please. For some Reason the connect between two GBAs don't work for me. In Super Mario Advance 4 i can't choose Acces Sava although i connect this Game with e reader in two Screens.

The WiiU Virtual Console release as well as Switch Online's GBA lineup contains the e-Reader Levels for SMA4. I'd suggest looking there. That being said, I don't actually know how the e-reader multiplayer stuff works. I didn't use it for this video.
