One thing I find really cool with this collection is how Party House and Pilot Quest (among others, but those two stand out the most in this regard to me) definitely seem to take influence from contemporary gaming trends, but they're framed in a way that makes them feel like they were innovative retro cult classics that went on to inspire future devs in a hypothetical alternate timeline where these games really were released in the era they're a homage to. That retro experimentation is a major appeal of this whole collection to me, a lot of these feel like a combination of that and some game jam entries I've seen. Also, shoutout to that Warp Tank music, chiptune swing hits so good

What's funny is when I played mooncat I got the strongest game jam vibes from it only to find out it actually WAS a game jam game. The original was titled "... And the mooncats" and I think I must've seen it before because as soon as I started up mooncat I got this strong sense that I've seen the guy before

Mooncat is so interesting thematically, it's like you're a newborn creature learning to walk for the first time so the controls are equally odd to give the player that feeling of relearning simple movement.

Onion delivery actually reminds me a bit of paper boy, which is absolutely a game you are meant to be horrible at and slowly get better and everyone will think "oh this kid just sucks" watching you go boss mode and then try it and then realize they didnt know how strong you were. IDK maybe thats not a thing but thats my story with Paperboy lol. Like you watch and and you're thinking "dude just put the papers where they go?", and then you're playing it and then you're not playing it because you lost, and you aren't telling anyone what to do anymore because you are busy turning red.

Fun fact for Rock On! Putting fires on both sides of your chicken cooks them in one turn. You can also place fires, chickens, and cavemen DURING the wave. So I place chickens during the wave and then when the wave is over they pop as cooked and BAM I’m rich.

Given what I've read of the game's development, it was all done in GameMaker Studio. It might be easier and overall better for Mossmouth to just make public the various hard and soft limitations they imposed on themselves during development, and any related info like color palettes. A virtual LX-III would be pretty sick, though. I'm thinking Pico-8 or SmileBASIC but with more standardized controls and game-adjacent elements like pausing and the Terminal. You could even have custom Gardens or Garden-like achievement-showcase features.

Ok first off, I feel you on the Caramel Caramel game. I'm not getting it yet either, but that's because Warptank has taken over my life. Warptank is thee best game I've played since Tetris. I do see what you mean about the screen movement but it never bothered me. I can't stop coming back and optimizing every move. I'm at 18 hours on it and I still feel the thrill of shaving off a second on a stage. I haven't even found all the stages yet but I did beat the big tank. I'm honestly looking to start making diagrams of all the levels and planning out every possible move. Recording my gameplay and going over it frame by frame. I feel like I'm taking this as serious as speed runners take NES Super Mario. 10/10 Can't believe that Warptank came with 49 other amazing games.

I put like 6 hours into beating mortol 2 and it was both incredibly frustrating and also incredibly addictive and compelling. I'd love if this game had another map you could play after beating the first one, there would be tons of staying power for me, just in terms of the game mechanics. Really dang solid. I would buy mortol 2 as its own video game 100% (and a part of me almost wants to try making something like it just to add more levels/worlds to the concept). Optimizing my run (I first beat it in co-op using 96 lives) will probably be a really fun pursuit as well.

All jokes aside, I played it for like... I'll say 1 or 2 hours. Just straight up losing with no directions until something inside me clicked. My third eye opened and I heard a voice "I get it" It had been a while since I enjoyed trying to figure out a game so much. I finished all 6 scenarios. I haven't gotten the cherry Disk. 5 wins in a row is way more difficult than it looks.

Do these games have save states or some save function or are they just as old school in that area as in their difficulty?
@Arras01

The longer games save, but a lot of them do just kick you back to the title screen. I think 20 out of 50 have some sort of save system.

I feel like I'm the only person who hated Golfaria. I get the that you're meant to figure out the games as you play them, but I really just did not like being penalized to start all over with Golfaria just because I'm exploring the map via trial & error; a third of my shots sending me downhill into a water hazard. Had zero patience for it.

this video is awesome and thanks a bunch for the timestamps (im avoiding spoilers) just a minor nitpick: party house is much more a poolbuilding game, a mechanic borrowed from board games. i only say this because it feels very much like when Slay The Spire brought deckbuilding from board games to videogames.

This looks awesome! Picking it up tomorrow. I’m a little perplexed that there isn’t an action platformer like Mario, though. They were very common in the 8-bit era. There’s lots of games like that already, but I feel like it’s missing something like that

From the looks of things, Mini & Max is probably the closest thing in the collection to that (though you defeat enemies by picking them up Mario 2 style).

It's going for a mixture of MSX/microcomputer games and classic arcade games, rather than anything developed with console as the lead platform. Those platforms were much more heavily weighted towards either short form action and puzzle games and some slower paced, strategically focused games than anything like Mario or Sonic. You're also going to have a hard time making something as elaborate as those games in a compilation, as they're designed to be played over a longer period until you can master them.

As a strategy gamer born after the 80s I was skeptical about the whole thing - ended up sinking in 10 hours into just 3 games of the collection and very glad I did! Equally glad for this review honestly, as someone who probably has the opposite taste in games to yours in terms of what I'd enjoy, and thoroughly play! As an aside, at 10:53, you mentioned Avianos has only 3 story difficulties, which it technically true, but once you beat the hardest level, you unlock 5 more trials each of increasing difficulty, if you want to keep pushing your single-player prowess. Level 4 and 5 in particular are truly insane, as they randomize all the abilities of all 'ancestors' making runs dramatically different from each other - the modern roguelike sensibilities run strong throughout this 'old-fashioned' piece~
