One thing I find really cool with this collection is how Party House and Pilot Quest (among others, but those two stand out the most in this regard to me) definitely seem to take influence from contemporary gaming trends, but they're framed in a way that makes them feel like they were innovative retro cult classics that went on to inspire future devs in a hypothetical alternate timeline where these games really were released in the era they're a homage to. That retro experimentation is a major appeal of this whole collection to me, a lot of these feel like a combination of that and some game jam entries I've seen. Also, shoutout to that Warp Tank music, chiptune swing hits so good

Onion delivery actually reminds me a bit of paper boy, which is absolutely a game you are meant to be horrible at and slowly get better and everyone will think "oh this kid just sucks" watching you go boss mode and then try it and then realize they didnt know how strong you were. IDK maybe thats not a thing but thats my story with Paperboy lol. Given what I've read of the game's development, it was all done in GameMaker Studio. It might be easier and overall better for Mossmouth to just make public the various hard and soft limitations they imposed on themselves during development, and any related info like color palettes. A virtual LX-III would be pretty sick, though. I'm thinking Pico-8 or SmileBASIC but with more standardized controls and game-adjacent elements like pausing and the Terminal. I'm at 18 hours on it and I still feel the thrill of shaving off a second on a stage. I haven't even found all the stages yet but I did beat the big tank. I'm honestly looking to start making diagrams of all the levels and planning out every possible move. Recording my gameplay and going over it frame by frame. I would buy mortol 2 as its own video game 100% (and a part of me almost wants to try making something like it just to add more levels/worlds to the concept). Optimizing my run (I first beat it in co-op using 96 lives) will probably be a really fun pursuit as well.

From the looks of things, Mini & Max is probably the closest thing in the collection to that (though you defeat enemies by picking them up Mario 2 style).

@@thealexfish4480 yeah no traditional left to right platformer! Mooncat is the closest to this but with the non traditional controls it doesn’t fit 1 to 1.

@@XanaGear okey I’ll try that first then. Thanks for the clarification!

Most of the games are more modern style games, just framed in a very old school artstyle

It's going for a mixture of MSX/microcomputer games and classic arcade games, rather than anything developed with console as the lead platform. Those platforms were much more heavily weighted towards either short form action and puzzle games and some slower paced, strategically focused games than anything like Mario or Sonic. You're also going to have a hard time making something as elaborate as those games in a compilation, as they're designed to be played over a longer period until you can master them.

As a strategy gamer born after the 80s I was skeptical about the whole thing - ended up sinking in 10 hours into just 3 games of the collection and very glad I did! Equally glad for this review honestly, as someone who probably has the opposite taste in games to yours in terms of what I'd enjoy, and thoroughly play! As an aside, at 10:53, you mentioned Avianos has only 3 story difficulties, which it technically true, but once you beat the hardest level, you unlock 5 more trials each of increasing difficulty, if you want to keep pushing your single-player prowess. Level 4 and 5 in particular are truly insane, as they randomize all the abilities of all 'ancestors' making runs dramatically different from each other - the modern roguelike sensibilities run strong throughout this 'old-fashioned' piece~

i think combatants might be intentionally frustrating since lore-wise it's the game when the company was going downhill and the producer made this one as his first ever game.

Interesting collection, hope it comes to consoles soon. If you like moody synth sounds you should check out the genre skweee. It's mostly instrumental, charming, slow and kind of odd.
