I recently discovered Nile. Immediately bought a 7-string guitar and tuned it to drop A, just to play Lashed to the slave stick. I have no idea how they can be so good, yet so many people have never heard of them.

Yes, a Nile ranking and review. One of my all time favorites in death metal. I love how their lyrics deal with ancient Egyptian mythology and history and they even incorporate Middle Eastern styles of music in their already amazing style of technical/brutal death metal. Aside from one album (due the production, the musicianship is amazing), I think all their albums are great and I'm looking forward to their new album. Here would be my rating of each album: Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka: 3.75/5 Black Seeds of Vengeance: 4/5 In Their Darkened Shrines: 4.5/5 Annihilation of the Wicked: 5/5 Ithyphallic: 4.75/5 Those Whom the Gods Detest: 4.5/5 At the Gate of Sethu: 2/5 What Should Not Be Unearthed: 4/5 Vile Nilotic Rites: 4.25/5

Those Whom is their magnum opus imo. I think their songwriting chops peaked there. They are my favorite dm band in general though and i can respect all kinds of opinions on them as long as it is recognized that they are a pretty amazing and unique band. i often get the feeling that a lot of the dislike they garner from dm fans is just caused by them not being a late 80s/early 90s band and having folk influences.

Annihilation was my introduction to the band and I think is still my favourite. Followed closely by For those whome the gods detest and in their darkened shrines. Saw them on the Amongst the Catacombs album tour in '98...In Their Darkened Shrines is still my overall fav...Tony Laureano displays perhaps one of the best drum-fill outings on record...666%BEAST...but the 1st 3 or 4 are still the best...very unique in '98 and certainy helped bring extreme Death Metal back to the forefront(and then some) along with Cryptopsy and Dying Fetus, etc.), after several years of a Black Metal surge, not to mention many DM bands changing and weakening significantly from '93 on...still look forward to what they will put out...haven't been as excited with the past 3, but still a powerhouse, especially Karl and George 🤘

Nile has made incredible albums and yeah, there are some flaws. But Ithyphallic (my favorite), Annihilation of the Wicked, and In their darkened shrines have so many catchy riffs, it's not just wanky guitar work, it's tech death that makes me go into a whole new world
@postlex3 ай бұрын
In my opinion Vile Nilotic Rites was a true return to prime form since Annihilation. The interceding albums were never great. Apart from some banger tracks, I felt the dissonant, thrashy sound was taking over and I didn’t really care for that (let alone the sub-par production). Dallas’ departure, and Kingsland’s arrival seem to have allowed for the return of melody and harmonics; intricately composed death metal, really. Dallas’ own band (Narcotic Wasteland), which is very much about the dissonant, thrasy death metal sound, is actually pretty great, so it appears to me that at least musically the split makes sense for all involved. The two new tracks sound great, and I am very excited to hear the new record.

Black Seeds of Vengeance is way Heavier than Among the Catacombs of Nephen Ka. To Dream of Ur just is . Unas Slayer of Gods, and Sarcophagus from Among Their Darkened Shrines is also Heavier than anything else in their catalog. Annihilation of the Wicked tried to capture the evil ambience and creepy Brutality of the first 3 albums, but winds up sounding Commercial. Nile after AOTW is just feeble. When Mr Sanders decided to write songs about eating dog crap and Howling like a wolf to get in touch with the spirit world just doesn't accomplish the goal in mind.

At The Gate of Sethu is one of the worst death metal albums I've heard. Awful production, thin as fuck guitars, TERRIBLE vocal job. I fell in love with Nile with the first 3 albums, and sadly nothing they've done since Sethu is any good. Their new one could take the cake for another unmemorable run-off-the-mill work.
