God I miss Pete Steele. Type O spoke to me in a time when I was going through some shit & felt like Noone was listening.I really could feel Pete's pain. I love the humor and sarcasm he injected into his pain. Got to see them once on the October Rust tour, my personal favorite album, they were amazing. Thanks for doing this review.

October Rust is without question one of my all time favourite Albums so it makes me very happy to hear you both praising it. Honestly I enjoy all of Type O Negative but October Rust is just something special. My one regret is I never got to see them live. Their last UK performance was when I was on Holiday in Japan. I wish Peter Steele was still with us. But overall great stuff.

Been a fan since the very beginning. These days I'm more into black and death metal but there will never be another band like Type O. It's just within the last year or two that I've come to realize the utter brilliance of their last album. The way the songs all run together toward the end of the album makes it feel like their Abbey Road medley. Type O Negative is my favorite band of all time. I was introduced to them in the early 2000s when a friend of mine handed me The Least Worst Of… and my mind was blown. Life is Killing Me came out shortly thereafter so that gives you an idea where I started with their discography. For me it almost depends on the time of year or the season to determine what is my favorite album. Like October Rust has an appropriate title since it really works for autumn. Life is Killing Me is my go to when driving into a summer sunset turning to night. World Coming Down I bust out during the dead of winter. And the other albums fit certain moods quite well like blasting Slow Deep and Hard/Origin (their basically the same album hahaha) when I’m pissed off. And Bloody Kisses has possibly my favorite my song of theirs with “We Hate Everyone” which you can thank “Der Untermensch” for its creation but the middle of that song is the most chill way to say “fuck you” I’ve ever heard. If I’m pressed to pick a favorite I’d say Life Is Killing Me but it’s extremely close. I would say that Dead Again has a nice mix of early and late career and gave me the feeling their best album was yet to come but we all know what happened. It’s also quite interesting that almost every album is a peek into what was going on in Pete’s life at the time. And I can dig that “warts and all” approach to songwriting. Not to mention they’re all great musicians. And like y’all discussed there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to the lyrics and I love learning what led to certain songs.

Slow, Deep and Hard. Got it on an unlabeled tape in 1991 and had no idea what the group was called until their commercial breakthrough with Bloody Kisses a few years later. Still think it's a brilliant record.

I 100% agree that Suspended In Dusk should have been on Bloody Kisses. That song being left off the album is their version of Strawberry Fields / Penny Lane being left off Sgt Peppers

Great discussion! Maybe slightly too long, i've listened it in some parts :) Some new facts about authors of one of my most beloved album in metal history - Bloody Kisses! Generally I agree with your views on ToN discography, with one slightly amendment - Bloody Kisses 5/5, October Rust 4.5/5, rest are on the same level for me, a little bit below those two absolute masterpieces.

I just started geting into type o. I haven't heard every album yet but i have enjoyed everything i have heard so far. Gothic metal realy isn't my thing but type o negative is realy the only exeption. And i realy love Peters previous band carnivore. I perticularly love their second album retaliation, that might honestly be the greatest crossover-thrash album of all time.

The digipack version of Bloody Kisses is the best. That was my introduction and love the song order and Suspended in Dusk way more than my vinyl version which I don't enjoy. I always thought Christian Woman started the album and Black #1 ends it. What's better than that and the girls are really kissing on the cover. Bonus points.

The year Peter died he had addressed the Nazi/white supremacist accusations. He admitted that he was young and ignorant when he wrote those lyrics in Carnivore and Slow Deep and Hard. Those last interviews Peter gave are super interesting because they presented a very different Peter. I remember him saying that he was tired of playing Black Number 1 and writing songs about ghosts and witches. Hey Pete is a really good song. Bloody Kisses is perfect to me. So is October Rust World Coming Down not perfect but nearly and Dead Again a very good album.

On the track 'der untermensch' I know there's references to immigration at the end of the song but for the most part it talks about opportunists that don't care about other people. I get that it sounds abrasive. But I don't think this makes Pete a racist any more than the rest of the album makes him a misogynist. Dark humor is a big part of that insecure giants way of coping with the world. It doesn't always land and understanding it entails understanding who Peter was.

As much as I adore S,D,&H, I think a 4 is a fair score. I find it to be the most pure and a lot better than their last few albums. They were healthy, honest, and focused. However, you clearly don't understand 80s NYHC and are clearly not from our generation. Der Untermensch is a powerful song and one of their best. Sorry the lyrics make you squirm. Your self loathing PC outlook would make them equally squirm. Life is complicated and Pete grew up in a rough time in a rough area. Like SOD had it's humor, but not really how you perceive it. And SOD became MOD and ramped up their non-PC social comments to 11.

What’s with the word “Rust” being in some of my favorite albums of all time: Rust in Peace and October Rust. I’ll say this imo….. Peter Steele was an edgelord and did or said edgy stuff. Not trying to excuse what he maybe said that was offensive but I think he did it for the edge.
