Reviewing GE's New 2 in 1 Washer & Dryer

I have this model but with the Smart Dispense feature. I don't do anything but throw the clothes in and push start. I put a full load in the machine and it only fills up the tub half way. Clothes are done in about 90 minutes but what's great about the machine is that they come out completely wrinkle free and soft. You can tell it's extremely gentle on the fabric. It doesn't use high heat to dry the clothes. It continuously recycles the air through a condensor coil that removes the moisture from the air which makes the clothes dry so it won't shrink your clothes or melt the logos off your sportswear. When you pull the clothes out, they're full of steam which makes them feel soft and keeps them from wrinkling up during the dry cycle- you don't get those lines pressed into the legs of your jeans. After the steam releases from the clothes, they feel nice and dry and very soft like they've been fluffed. It's a very luxurious result compared to a regular washer and dryer. Now you have to be prepared to respect this machine to keep it working properly. I did a lot of research before I bought it and there are quite a few videos about its idiosyncrasies. The filter and the filter housing are not optimized to keep lint and dust from getting into the condensor coil. If your coils gets clogged with dust and lint, it will not be able to condense the air properly so your clothes will not be able to dry. There are some good hacks on the lint filter to optimize it, particularly by filling up an odd void in the back of the housing which allows a lot of lint and dust to get past the filter as well as by adding some weather stripping around the edge. Apparently the ADA made GE add this strange void in the filter housing to make the filter more easily removable. I attached a chunk of foam to the end of the filter to fill that void up. I also added some weather stripping around the edge of the filter and so far not a single piece of lint has been caught on the condenser coil. The machine needs to be maintained almost like an HVAC heat pump furnace. Periodically, you can flush the coil with a sprayer to clean the dust off (I've seen the youtube videos of this) and you also have to clean out the drain filter periodically according to the manual. The benefit in my mind is that all my delicate sportswear with vinyl logos will stay looking new without the logos peeling off and I can wash my jeans without ruining them. Plus, I don't have to keep washing the same load over and over again because I forget to the put the wash in the dryer and end up with a smelly, moldy pile of moist clothes (this is really why I bought the machine). Plus it has wifi and cycles that will keep your clothes moving in the dryer until you get home to pull them out so you're not tied down at home doing laundry. You can do laundry while you're running errands and come home to dry clothes being fluffed in the dryer ready to take out.

I've heard there's a detergent smart dispense section in some of these new builds in that top tray.

Sorry buddy but this combo is a complete fail. After three months it started taking 6 hours then 8 then 12 hours per load. Lowes will not stand behind it, GE is no longer GE (Heiar or some other crap brand) and they just keep trying to fix it. The techs are worthless ex government employees who have never held a screwdriver in their lives and just read from from a screen prompt. The warranty is a lie. This combo washer is the worst purchase I have ever made and no one should ever purchase this nor have any confidence that GE is an American company with any interest in the American market.

@@sunflowerdreams3 Please stay away from this abomination. This tech has been around since the 1960's and no one can seem to get it right and GE is useless.

Well the machine was actually designed by GE in the USA even though it's manufactured by a Chinese appliance company which owns the GE name for appliances. Read my post above. I have this new model. If you still have the machine, rather than junk it I would see if the tech would open the housing around the condensor coil and either flush it out with a sprayer or with an air compressor. Then modify the filter as I mention in my post and as shown in other youtube videos. It's kind of sad you have to modify the filter to keep the machine working at optimum and I hope GE does something about that. I really don't think they have a clue what's happening inside that condenser coil and are instead replacing parts that don't need to be replaced and won't fix the issue.
