This season the Canes have struggled at the start of games when they come off long breaks. They took a little longer to get going in this one, but the third period looked more like typical Canes hockey.

@@kevinborg7145 I saw no forms of embellishment at all, I did see at least 3 crosschecks ignored on Svech. There were maybe 2-3 missed calls on the Canes, again I didn't see any embellishment the whole game.

​@@squirrelz6117 The penalty that led to the first Canes goal was soft, that slashing call at the end was 100% embellished. I'm not an Isles fan but it was obvious the Canes were flopping all game, looking to sell calls. It's very typical of them, they have a very good power play so it's clear why they do it. When they struggle to score 5v5 it's an easy advantage to get a lead.

Not a fan of the calls but Isles had plenty of opportunities to score, just couldn’t capitalize. Andersen was a brick wall.

Andersen being as fresh as he is, with a low workload, during the season, after missing 50 games, is like him only playing a month and a half. This is going to be huggge, as long as he stays healthy. The ' Canes will ride him as far as they can go. The Isles will slow down Carolina, but be unable to win the series. However, with that being said, Patrick Roy was the right coach for them, and they will be tough for many years.

@@dldavis1212 oh, your talking about everything the isles do or other teams that play the canes is a penalty!? What matters is 3 penalties called against isles and only 1 delay of game was legit! The other 2 were obvious dives, even the announcers said it and they scored on 1,the diff in the game! Not to mention, there's an entire video dedicated to all the BS penalties called against the isles in last year's series against the canes! Plus there were many commenting that this is what the canes do to everyone and get away with it! Not to mention, it's not coincidence as was pointed out that the canes are 14-0-0 with the ref who called the game!! So tell me another 1!🙄

The hits in this game is why i mentioned grabbing the hurricanes hits from the post season form last year, they hit alot more in the playoffs vs the like 7 a game in the regular season

Isles looked way better than they looked last year. Lots of positives to take for the Islanders, and Anders Lee was a beast in the 2nd. The real story of the game though is that Varlomov was perfectly good, and Anderson was borderline unbeatable

This is going to be interesting going forward. Anderson was virtually unstoppable, but the Canes had a lot of sloppy passes where they lost control of the puck. If they can tighten that up going forward, then I could see them beating the Islanders in 5

anderson made the saves but he looked shaky to me in my opinion. The puck that almost squeaked through. The 2 posts islanders hit, and shots that were from a decent distant he allowed rebounds that could be easily picked off. Amazing save on dobson after he hit the post and palmieri missed a wide open net. Not saying he did his job and didn't get the win, but if it wasn't for the islanders being absolutely shitty and unlucky I can see anderson getting beat easily

@@NYSeaNile he looked shaky in the beginning and seemed somewhat unorthodox throughout but was effective. Canes had maybe 2 or 3 really good chances and scored them, islanders had at least half a dozen and only took one. sometimes thats the way the cookie crumbles, but if the isles play with the same intensity they did throughout the game (especially in the second) they will win games and this will be a close series.

most fans don't watch much of the Canes during the regular season, so as someone who watched every game: this was not "Canes hockey" and they still pulled out a solid win. the 4th line + outstanding work in goal from Anderson won the game. when they do get to "Canes hockey", and if they can sustain it for multiple games in a row, watch out.

This was a pretty evenly matched game, the only difference is that the Canes have better special teams. The Isles got the better of the Canes in shots, as they were very good at blocking them. That first Canes goal was rough because it was on a very soft call, but the Isles did a good job at staying in it. This series is pretty much going like I expected, just very low scoring and defensive

Anderson shaky…Brindy said their effort wasn’t there and Isles have played that way for a month. Canes had two good shifts at start of third, Isles buckled and 4th line scores. Not sure Isles can play better but Canes can play better.

I was at the game as a Canes fan. I thought the Islanders somewhat deserved to win tonight. Carolina was quite rusty from the layoff, and it affected their passing and overall game. Especially the second period, Carolina was playing the Islanders game instead of their own. To be honest, even though they outplayed us tonight in my view, I think the Islanders should be worried because of how solid a punch they delivered tonight without getting a victory. I guarantee that the Canes will have a better game 2, and if the Islanders can't win with a performance like they had tonight, when will they?

Isles got goalied, canes got the one bounce to get ahead of them this game and we’re the benefit of refs not calling dives. Sucks but there’s not much to look into. This series will be played evenly. If the isles don’t start putting pucks in the special teams will be the death of the isles.

The playoffs are a great amplifier of a team's shortcomings. The Islanders played well structurally and Varlamov was solid, why did they lose? They lack forwards who can consistently finish, opportunities were plentiful and Brind'Amour was not happy with his team's performance. Unfortunately for the Islanders there isn't another gear they can kick into and Carolina can play a lot better than they did today, but for some Islander fans, the team made the postseason, so mission accomplished, mores the pity!

Brind'Amour owns the Isles. Now 9-2 in the playoffs, lifetime. Andsrsen being super fresh, due to missing 50 games, because of blood clots, gives the 'Canes a goalie who has not been overworked. This is a rare advantage, Carolina will exploit.

My thoughts on Game 1 Bruins vs Leafs. This was a more enjoyable game to watch than the Canes-Islanders game. I just like how both teams play cycling the puck. The game is fast paced which is what I like. The Bruins dominated the Leafs in scoring. The Leafs are very good in puck cycling but somehow they need guys at the front of the Bruins net, to tap pucks in. I am now questioning whether I should be putting tne Bruins higher in my ranking of teams as Stanley Cup contenders.

Canes are glued to the boards again, this is our playoff game. It kind of stinks. I then watch a little bit of Boston, and they always have a center feed available to keep the pressure off the boards. It's absolutely incredible how good Carolina can be at times, but it kind of blows that they play so strange in the O-Zone for so many games in a row. I mean, they had hit a bit of a stride once they picked up Guentzel and Kuznetsov, but then a few weeks later they looked dead in the water. Every line looks like a checking line now, seriously.

Isles played a tight game and made Carolina look slow. This wasn’t because Carolina played bad. It’s just what happens when teams start to try all the time. There’s just different gears teams play with when in the playoffs. Ik the rod the bod is a big preacher of always playing to that gear throughout the season which explains the dominance in the regular season and shortcomings come playoffs

The first PP was a bit soft, I say that as a Canes fan, I'll also say that the Zebras must have recognized that because they did their damnedest to not call anything they absolutely didn't have to (like the delay of game) the rest of the game. Isles were definitely the better team for 2 periods and Freddie carried us. Canes came out in the 3rd Period and looked like they ought to. Someone else mentioned it here but Carolina is absolutely god awful this year anytime they are coming out of a break and it can take them a game or two to get back into the swing of things. I dont know if thats a player issue or a coaching issue but it's been noticeable.

Canes played the first 2 periods like crap and still managed to keep the score 1-1. When they finally woke up in the third the pace of the game changed. I do not want to get overconfident, but if the Isles couldn't win this game, the Canes take this series.

I see a lot of people saying Andersen was a wall and he was unstoppable but even as a canes fan I think we was decent but made saves when it counted. Besides those 1 or 2 saves from the ground, I’d give him a B rating. Solid performance and of course a win resulting from it, but as far as rebound control and staying on his feet he played “good” not “amazing”… again this is my opinion and some may disagree but I’m just saying Freddy can be better, but no complaints with a win! Isles had plenty of opportunities (more than the canes would like) but it seemed puck luck did not fall in the isles favor tonight. Easily could have been 4-3 canes

Canes fan here and to be fair while I va’r speak for every crowd, the Canes crowd is really loud about it. The change has becomes a tradition at the games and it’s just louder in the playoffs. I was there and the crowd was rocking today.

That penalty that led to the first goal was such bs. Embellishment is getting more and more obvious, but referees basically refuse to call it. I have been saying this about the canes for years because I think they have some players who like to sell it, but it's a growing problem in the NHL.

The calls in the first were bad, but it evened out in the end when the refs didn’t call some penalties on the Islanders when they should’ve. End of the day, the refs can’t be blamed for the Isles not capitalizing and Andersen being a brick wall. That the Isles squandered a great chance at a road win is unfortunate, since I think the Canes will tighten the ship for Game 2 and look a lot better. Regardless, a very fun game to open the playoffs.

Believe me, they were trying! That's like saying they weren't trying during the season when the isles went 2-1-1 against them! No team is gonna risk losing especially a playoff game which if not for the isles being called on 2 dives that the canes scored on 1,the game is 1-1 going to OT! Believe me, they said the same last year when they won the series 4-2! 2 games where the canes were better 5-1,5-2 and 4 games decides by a goal which could have gone either way! The isles could have played the rags, the best team in hockey by pts and it would be the same! This is a mediocre league which is what Bettman wanted! It was also proved by Florida going to the finals, 8th seed last game and started beating an historic Boston Presidents trophy team! Not to mention, I'm 57 and watching hockey since 1972! I've seen many times where teams think they are superior and are shown the door! Isles did it to the Penguins not all that long ago as they were 2 time defending champs and were shown the door! So yeah, on paper, canes are better, but doesn't necessarily mean anything and your not gonna tell me you weren't wearing this game!
