So apparently I forgot to actually put the timestamp to skip to in the spoiler warning, so look for the "chapter" title for the skip (24:34) Sorry for the short hiatus, but personal life issues I mentioned before in a community post, plus this video taking forever to edit (my fault) led to this vid getting delayed. I'm working on Deus Ex right now but I'm thinking of doing a different type of video next week, I need to recharge my creative batteries. Reviews can get pretty monotonous especially when nothing new is coming out. Blame the AAA industry for thinking nobody buys games in summer.

Hey Mr. Synthetic Man, love the videos. As a tip for video quality, KZbin has been screwing with the video rendering process for a lot of smaller channels. Starting at 0:31 at the bottom of the screen you can see a ton of compression and pixelation in your video. This is because when you upload a video at certain resolutions/framerates (in this case, 1080p 60fps), KZbin will heavily compress your video. This doesn't happen for larger channels, something to do with a subscriber/viewership ratio or something. For smaller channels, we have to upload at either 1440p 60fps, 4k 30 fps, or 4k 60fps to get KZbins "special" compression. Right now, Anything 1080p 60fps or 1440p 30fps or lower gets this shittier, completely different codec. Bitrate does not matter, it has to be recognized at one of KZbin's desired resolution/framerate ratios. And again, larger channels apparently don't deal with this and they get the "premium" compression anyway. The good news is that while this sucks for streaming, you can simply tell premiere or whatever editing software you're using to render at the desired framerate (I usually render at 4k 60 or 1440p 60 lately). Just thought I'd throw it out there, creator to creator, because it might be driving you nuts like it did for me but I could never figure this shit out until very recently.

@@TheTechnicalMiracle Wow, youtube never ceases to amaze me. Thanks for the tip, I guess I'll go for 1440p 60fps for the future.
@TheTechnicalMiracle

@@SyntheticMan Yeah, it's annoying. On that note, they keep upping the requirement. At one point, 1440p 30fps and I think 1080p 60fps we're fine but they've obviously changed it. It's totally ridiculous that a backlog of my videos look like ass when there's a lot of motion going on (like in any game) when they could've been totally fine if KZbin had been transparent to begin with. Love the channel. Great work fam. Excited for your Deus ex video if it comes out. I made a video on it a few months back for the anniversary, that game is a fucking trip. So good.

Hey man, i know it may be late, but Stealth in this game has very quirky rules that probably are the result of attempting to make it realistic: 1.-The MP5SD is only completely silent IF you shot singles, otherwise the enemy can "hear" the bullets ricocheting/flying 2.-The machete CAN be used for stealth takedowns but only if the enemy is away from other enemies as they'll hear them scream 3.-Take this with a grain of salt, but i think enemies have a harder time spotting you at night, now i'm not so sure if this is true but the only two missions i've ever completed stealthly i did them at night 4.-Again on weapons, you'll get detected with the MP5SD/Makarov if you shoot an enemy in any other area than the head, but SOMETIMES loud weapons won't raise the alarm if they are far enough from other enemies 5.- The only two weapons that i'm aware are OHK/ don't attract too mcuh attention are the dart gun and the silenced shotgun 6.-Explosions can distract them and won't give away your position except on the cease fire area

Getting to and from objectives was a challenge in itself, one where the challenge forced me to explore and experiment. Some rivers were quicker and safer to traverse than roads or vice versa, some hidden pathways made for convenient exits later, and there were even a few spots where a target could be destroyed from incredible distances. Tactics became more dynamic too, IEDs or fire to distract groups of enemies, ambushes, evasion, and most importantly; turning off headlights when driving at night to slip through checkpoints before they have time to give chase.

Far Cry 2 is immersive. It's not an "immersive sim", but almost all of the game is built to immerse you in the world, immerse you in the setting and themes. All built to immerse you with a certain atmosphere. That can actually said about many older Ubisoft titles. Take something like Splinter Cell Chaos Theory for example. It's not an immersive sim, but immerses you to the spy espionage.

A small but important detail you might have missed. The Jackel has terminal brain cancer. If you pay attention a few of the faction bosses talk about it, and the jackel himself said that you and him are “terminal cases.” Referring to his cancer and your advanced stage of malaria. You can check on your malaria stage in your journal. In fact if you take enough malaria pills you can essentially knock your malaria into a benign state. But during the last mission, regardless of how many pills you have it jumps to an advanced state and your player comments that he knows he will die So the jackel is ok with you taking the diamonds because your a dead man either way, the pistol is just a quicker less miserable way out. “Your a terminal case, same as me, at least this way we can do something about it.”

A lot of people never learned how to properly play this game and hated it. At it's heart, this game is an ambush simulator. You should never just cruise on roads from camp to camp and paint the map. That's not how these things work. The roads are hostile because they are supposed to be. You are supposed to off-road, bushwhack your way through the jungle or sneak down a river in a puttering motorboat. Fighting should always be a risk that is best avoided, and if you must, make sure you take every advantage. Plan ambushes and raids, pepper a convoy with a machine gun from the bushes before retreating and circling to another flank where you can detonate the explosives you planted by your initial ambush point. Everything about the gameplay, the maps, the weapons, everything is about fighting like a guerilla. You arent Rambo from Rambo 3, you are Rambo from First Blood. I love this game, and ambushing trucks for new weapons never got old.

Far Cry 2 is the best surprisingly-improved sequel ever made to a game, keeping the basic foundation of the original, but reworking everything to make things far more fun and (IMO) balanced. No wall-hacking Trigens this time. Just you, the struggle to maintain your weaponry, malaria medicine and some of the smartest enemies in video game history. Plus, going standalone for the narrative was the best move.

This games uncompromising commitment to its theme was really awesome to see. Weapon degradation, vehicles breaking down in the wilderness, brutal healing animations, the unique currency, malaria... I have very vivid memories of this game, especially the mission I did right after I first bought the stealth suit. I swam into a complex in the middle of the night and cut about a dozen people down with a machete in the dark. The approaches you could craft in the sandbox, combined with the fairly detailed sim-lite elements created experiences that I never had in a game before I played it. It's a real shame how watered down it became, I would have vastly preferred them to double down on the sim aspects instead of trimming most of them away.

Fully agreed. The game went all-in with its vision, even though that meant annoying a lot of the more casual players. There's an official Far Cry 2 guide that demystifies all of the mechanics, particularly stealth. Enemies have hidden comfort stats which dictate their detection radius and willingness to hunt you down. I don't understand why games don't have more small stats and states that effect a wide variety of things of games mechanics. It seems like a good way to implement AI. Nowadays they seem too simple and it is boring. I believe stats and states help make the enemies feel more alive and more dynamic too like you wouldnt feel fighting the same people.

Infamous is the only level to play this game on. Get the malaria tablets, taken regularly your stamina improves so you can run longer. Checkpoints and vehicle patrols get you off the roads to travel cross country (on foot) where most of the diamonds sites are. You can rarely (if ever) kill everything at an outpost with sniping, there's always some close combat. Long story short, you're just one more evil effer destroying the country and creating misery, with a chance of fleeting redemption in the final act. There are no 'good guys' in this game, no tribals, and no cheesy magic, it's firmly grounded in the real world. And I love it. Still one of my favourite FPSs.

I definitely like the not being a hero aspect, you the player are as much a victim as you are the perpetrator of the misery you see in the place the game takes place in, same as the Jackal, and from the get go he sees you for what you really are, it's a really neat element of this game's narrative that often gets overlooked in favour of more surface level elements like the gunplay, stealth and quests, that nobody has really tried doing since, very rarely do you get to play a game where you're not the chosen hero.

You are stuck in a country full of instability and anarchy so much that the currency is total worthless and you are forced to use diamonds to make purchases. As someone that played this game back when it came out in 2008, when I was only 11. This game blew my mind, it was (and basically remains) such an incredibly unique, weird and experimental game by FPS standards. Everything from the setting, the atmosphere, the pacing, the tone, etc. makes Far Cry 2 stand out. The idea of cynically taking part in a brutal civil war in an African country just to earn literal blood diamonds is pretty original and bold. I have so much respect for how daring this game was, especially for a "mainstream" AAA FPS.

It's basically the mix of both stealth and loud when the enemies know that they are under attack, but cannot locate you. You simply take out your SVD, take couple of shots at enemies or gas tanks to start the fire and relocate before they aproach your position. Movies and their effect on video games is also to blame as it's not that bad but looks really cool when it happens in game. A lot of these older games might have seen footage from Bosnia and the Russian invasion of the middle east. Production of the RPG at the time wasn't amazing and kind sped up to meet the ever expanding quota. Even the American LAW wasn't amazingly accurate either from similar reasons. It's what pushed the advancement of the Javelin and Kornet or any guided munitions we see now

Stealth in Far Cry 2 is pretty representative of what the game is all about. Stealth is essentially a direct road to failure. And that's ultimately the point. No matter what plan you make and no matter how hard you try to execute it properly, shit will go sideways very quickly. Far Cry 2's gameplay is about improvising in the face of uncontrollable chaos. I guess that's why it's a niche title. It's hilariously resistant to giving the player full control of any situation. And you know gamers. We like our power fantasies and FC2 is most certainly not one of those. Still, it's a flawed masterpiece and one of the most interesting games you can play, even in 2021. And yes, it IS the best Far Cry game.

You CAN hide in tall grass. But the effectiveness is very affected by light. But they'll definitely have a harder time spotting you crawling through grass than out in the open. It's quite possible to be stealthy in this game, it's just very hard in a way few other stealth games are. To be clear about the games mechanics: the only guaranteed silent kill is a single silenced headshot. The makarov is your bread and butter for a ghost playstyle, but you gotta nail those shots and as you've noticed, the body can't be seen either.

The best thing about this game is it didn't give a damn about you. You weren't a hero. You weren't super. You weren't even significant. You were just some Merc in some random town doing some random task for some random warlord. The environment didn't care about you, it'd kill you in a heartbeat. The enemies didn't care about you, you weren't impressive or super, you were another flesh and blood nobody. The only one who cared about your struggle for survival was you and your buddies you made in the game. And the game wasn't shy about letting you know they were expendable too. FarCry 2 would put two in the back of your skull and leave you for the vultures without a passing care in the world. And we loved it for that.
@doltBmB

The thing about driving around is... you're playing the game wrong. You're playing it like a linear game where you drive from mission to mission, point to point. Instead of the way it's designed, which is for every journey to be an adventure. Sure you'll want to end up at the mission, but it's not such a hard goal. If you're willing to go off the beaten path, plot your journey, take detours, explore, traversal is much more enjoyable. It's a mindset thing. If you goal-optimize like "I have to get to the mission now nothing else matters", then just like the malaria and gun jams, you will be annoyed that there are so many obstacles. But if you decide to go with the flow, then getting there is as much fun as arriving there.

Malaria in Far Cry 2 was met with much criticism from players, as the random attacks frequently interrupted gameplay at bad times (such as during combat), and players felt forced to do the Underground side missions.. as the medicine prevents the character from passing out. You can actually hide in the bushes to get closer to your enemies. And sometimes they can actually lose you, if you manage to get away after being spotted - had a couple of occasions when mercs would shoot my last cover position and then check if I was there. The main issue I have with stealth is that you have to get a headshot on an enemy, because even if you shoot him faster than he screams, other mercs will get alarmed. As for the 21:40 (SPOILERS) - you're not given the location of the Jackal, what you're doing in that village is bribing another faction member to unite with the opposite one. The Jackal simply camps there for the courier who will bring the money, and this courier happens to be you.

What I love about this game is, it teaches you the basics in controls, gives you a gun, then basically commands you to go find and kill the Jackal. It didn't hold the players' hand, like most modern games like to. Especially with how smart the enemy A.I. is; I feel like I have to use my head to survive, which I don't find in many other games. I don't do much stealth, but I like to get the drop on enemies. Often times, doing batshit crazy stuff, like jumping out of a Jeep, launching it into some enemies, then some explosive barrels. By the way, canonically, the Jackal is still alive.

Far Cry 2 really just felt like Far Cry. Being almost on your own, lost in a big merciless jungle and desert. Everything feels dangerous. The feel of being watched, hunted down. Low ammo, watching your weapons, because they can break. Everything just felt so fragile anf risky somehow. Getting a new weapon felt so good and rewarding. Holding that Rocket Launcher or sniping on a Hill down on Enemies. From Far Cry 3 on this almost vanished. The newer games are more like One Man Army just like Just Cause. No real character to it.

i dunno how i put this together but i eventually figured out the map is not mock topographic it is functional topographic and if you know a little about using terrain features to give yourself an advantage in a battle you can exploit this to really wipe out alot of enemies especially if you use the fire propagation to manipulate enemy squad movement. for example: setting up a killing zone outside an enemy camp by picking a machine gun spot where enemies will be funneled into a narrow corridor. then luring them into the funnel and using fire to block off flanking routes.

I didn't feel like I as a character was progressing at all, the game certainly wasn't & the characters spoke so fast I couldn't keep track of the details of the story. That's when it dawned on me. Synthetic Man: Far Cry 2 is the best Far Cry game. Me, a zoomer: yes. Also, I think the reason why weapon accuracy is so screwed up for anything other than snipers is because of them being left out in extreme conditions for years. Old AKs used by militias in some Middle East counfries are notorious for being incredibly inaccurate because they've been left there since the 1970s and 80s. I guess snipers are the exception, maybe, idk.

I was impressed with this game but later fed up and hurridely finished it... Driving is really boring, sense of speed is Shit ,u r speedometer shows 100 but it feels 40 or something. Mountains covering the maps are also real pain.

Stealth and "Stealth" are my favorite things about the far cry games.. But I love it the most in them because it isn't forced or scripted. If you get caught, there's other ways out. That dynamic and unexpected change in combat keeps everything fresh and fun. This game, however, is brutal when it comes to stealth and combat. No room for errors or winging it when a plan fails. The game is good, the atmosphere is great, but the experimental nature of it kept me from enjoying it as much as 3, 4, and 5.

Yeah, I tried FC2, didn't like it. I'll stick with FC3, if you don't mind.

yeah it felt like a Demo I play from Crysis from person who REALLY likes an Arma hybrid with Stalker and it doesn't "Flow" well, Far Cry 3 is the BEST "flowing" game for me that feels like an actual game and not a tech demo. I do enjoy the mechanic and ADORE them like games like the Metro Trilogy, where those FEEL like video games unlike far cry 2 with it's forever demo feel.

Love this game and I've replayed it more than any other Farcry game...ambushing the convoy with an IED left in the road was hilarious 😂

I can agree with some of the glaring issues like enemy respawning or repetitive missions but then again i always find things like vehicle patrols to be sort of the distractions to the boring driving "problem". And about the outposts, you can find ways to stealth around them without engaging. You'll probably have to get rid of your vehicle and it'll take longer to get around but it can be done. Also, sniper style is OP and the way to go imo.

Far Cry 2 is easily one of my all time favorite games. It is easily the most immersive game I've ever played. I totally understand why you would hate the fast travel, road patrol and outpost mechanics but to me I've always seen them as integral to how oppressive the world of Far Cry 2 is. I always turn the difficulty up to max because I want that oppression of the world and the enemies as it's so important to the immersion for me. The shooting mechanics are decent but nothing special, so if the game is too easy it get's boring very quickly. Having the difficulty be high means that you have to really think about how you approach every encounter. The map isn't THAT big but it can be so tough to get across it that it feels big. The missions are great but honestly I consider getting to the missions an integral part of the experience. I know it could be seen as repetitive but every outpost is just different enough, as well as likely having a slightly different loadout each time you visit one to make it interesting for me. I know I'm biased to a certain extent by childhood nostalgia, but I've gone back to many games I played around the same time and none of them hold up as well as Far Cry 2

This game is wonderful, and love it even more with the Multi Fix Launcher and Realism + Redux. Edit: as for the stealth, I think when it comes to suppressed weapons. IRL those things are still really loud, so either the game devs went for a “realistic” approach to the suppressors or that’s like, a bug.

Far cry 2 is probably one of the very few games where guns actually do jam or break since it's in africa, it's such an amazing and annoying mechanic, i wish more open world games did this The Malaria is annoying yes and yes the exploration sucks as hell, i hated driving in this game But other than that i love the details and healing animations, the story i don't find it too much memorable compared to far cry 1's crazy underrated story but it's still a solid and underrated game. Seeing someone talking about far cry 1 and 2 is like a someone talking about persona 1 and 2. Both fans and the company ignores the 2 first games while the 3 recent games are the most memorable and loved by them. Anyways, good video, earned a sub.
