As I've gotten older I realize that I felt that way because Nintendo had always catered to me up until that point, and I was annoyed that they stopped doing so that gen. I don't really care much about video games these days but back then it felt like the sky was falling.

There's actually a lot of middle ground, it's just not very obvious because many games look like shovelware if you didn't know any better. Most of the niche, middle-budget PS1 and PS2 developers went over to the Wii due to HD development cost.

But something I wish most folks would do with the original Wii is completely ignore the shovelware that came on the system and just focus on the games that made the original Wii underrated to begin with. Yes, shovelware is huge on Wii, but that doesn't make the system bad if it has some actual great games on it and it does. And I'm not just talking about the Nintendo games on the system, either.

I remember getting my Wii in 2008 on Christmas. Sitting there at the TV with my Mom & Grandma watching me play Smash Bros Brawl & all the times me & my parents would play Wii Bowling & Mario Kart Wii on weekends late at night. The Wii may not be the best thing in the world, but as my 2nd gaming console ever to have, it was the best thing in the world to 5 year old me at the time lol.

the gamestop story kinda reminds me of my own experience with Gamestop and the WiiU. The WiiU was about 6 months old at the time and I thought "Huh...Why don't I go buy a WiiU, some of these games look cool and I can finally put my Wii to bed." I was like...oh I don't even remember how old back then but I do know back then I had to trade in a lot of games I didn't play anymore, and while I could have bought a new WiiU, I bought a used one that was technically never used. I know because the Gamepad wasn't scratched up or have any smudges, it was completely clean, still all wrapped up, everything was neatly in place. The person who bought it prior, bought it for her grandson as a present for doing so well in school, but found out his grades were slipping, so she took it back before he/she had a chance to play on it.. So I ended up getting a practically NEW WiiU at the time for a used price of $50 off. I know the WiiU did fail but back then, that was a pretty sweet deal, you don't get that lucky very often.

The "sensor bar" is just a row of infrared lights. The actual sensor is on the remote. I actually use to put two candles on the side of the tv so that I could navigate to the homebrew channel since my sensor bar broke.

I still have my Wii. When it was new, I played mostly the closest thing to "hardcore" games on the system like Red Steel, No More Heroes, Prince of Persia, etc. But I also had a lot of the casual games. Overall, I liked it but it wasn't my favorite. All these years later, I don't play it much, but every once in a while I really like firing it up for the ultra casual games, especially when I only have a few spare minutes. A few minutes of Mario Kart or Wii Play is so relaxing, there there's just something about the cheery music.

So I know this video is like two years old at this point, but as somebody who bought a Wii at launch I believe that this is not a launch Wii. The wrist straps on the Wii remotes were vastly different for the first couple of months after launch. They were far less durable and had a different fastening system at the end. These were recalled pretty quickly as they would break pretty easily resulting in Wii remotes breaking TVs. Like I kid you not, Christmas of that year, literally a month and 6 days after the launch of the Wii, I got a new Wii remote a a present and it already had the new strap on it. It’s really surprising how quickly that change got made along with a few changes to the remotes and nunchucks themselves.

The Wii sensor bar actually just acted as an infrared light source. The Wiimote picked up the IR light and triangulated its position, then communicated with the console using Bluetooth.

@Deku yea I'm with the other guy. It didn't fail cause of the architect, the 360 used a very similar architect as well. The problem was bad marketing and it released way to late. If it went head to head against the Xbox 360 and PS3 it could have sold phenomenal. But instead it released in November of like 2012 and just barely over a year later the PS4 and xbox1 came out and made the tech look inferior big time

@Deku they didn't have a hard time developing for it because of the architect, certain developers just refused and bitched cause the CPU was to slow and bottle necked the GPU. It had better graphics than the 360 but a slower processor. Developers just didn't want to scale back assets to get everything to run well

I disliked the Wii. I brought one just for Monster Hunter 3 and I regretted it. Monster Hunter 3 was ported to the Nintendo 3DS (a superior system) as Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate a year later too. (Monster Hunter 3 was awesome though!!)

Wii was awesome, original Xenoblade (best one), Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, two Zeldas, Metroid prime 3, Sin and Punishment Star Sucessor, and anyone that says they didn't enjoy Wii Sports at launch is lying!

I never owned a Wii but damn, one of the best systems to modify and the catalogue... with native emulators even, still is one of the best systems to emulate all old school Nintendo games.

I got my first Wii this year from a co-worker. She couldn't get it to work and wanted me to take a look at the Wii. I did, and the batteries in the wiimote were bad and already leaked. I cleaned the controller, and the power button on the console was fine before I even got it. I told them what I found, and they then told me to keep it. I didn't want it, but I thanked them for it and I got a free copy of Mario Galaxy 2 that was left inside it.

I bought my Wii refurbished from Gamestop. I had a lot of good memories playing it.

the wii is still one of my favourite consoles, I modded it at the start of last year so I can play emulators and isos on it so now I play F-Zero GX on my wii using a sd card. I will eventually grab myself a physical copy of F-Zero GX but for now this is the best way to play it for me
