Many people asked me in the video where to get the SCART cable from. Get THIS cable. It allows you to get the stereo audio from the front headphone jack of your Model 1 Genesis/Mega Drive: www.retrogamingcables.com/sega-mega-drive-1-sega-genesis-1-stereo-rgb-av-scart-cable-tv-lead.html

The biggest issue I had while trying to get older consoles to work was that my TV's didn't support the low resolution they output at. Converting their signal to HDMI wasn't an issue, but I didn't even think about upscaling. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. Enjoyed it!

For the record, component is Y (luminance, green cable) Pb (the difference between blue and luma, blue cable) and Pr (difference between red and luma, red cable). Green is not carried but instead is calculated as the difference of what's left over.

Cool mod, but really these retro systems look far better and more authentic on a CRT TV.
@chase7433
@chase7433 10 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more. The aspect ratio alone of a modern 16:9 screen ruins the authentic feel, that stretched picture looks horrible. Furthermore, I think this RGB up-scaler is far too sharp, the pixels here appear blocky and unrounded. Utilising the RGB SCART out of the Mega-Drive/Genesis and plugging that directly into a late 4:3 CRT TV has to be the best option by far.
@kir0nz

Chase 743 I concur.. well you could also get around that problem with 2 ways.. 1) hook up the retro console to your HD tv with an SLG-3000 2) hook up an emulator to your HDTV via VGA and use scanlines Having said that this IS a pretty cool mod and I appreciate that there are people that prefer the naked, sharp pixel look and this mod is pretty cool for those in favour of it :) but personally when I look at retro games in full HD I feel like my eyes are getting raped :p heck even the devs sat in rooms full of crt tvs and monitors back in the day when they were coding and desiging them..

For anyone considering that specific HDMI converter, FYI: That 720p/1080p button doesn't just toggle through those two resolutions. It actually cycles through a number of resolutions, including a couple of oddballs which aren't supported on all HDTVs. I highly recommend plugging it into a PC monitor first, as PC monitors usually support a wider range of resolutions than TVs. Press the button until it says it's displaying your TV's preferred resolution, and then move it to your TV. This converter also introduces a ton of lag. Games that don't require super-fast reflexes are fine, but the lag can make some twitch games nearly unplayable, and, of course, light gun games won't work at all. I'm not a huge fan of emulation either, but personally I'd choose it over this particular RGB-HDMI converter. Of course, the *correct* answer is a CRT TV and an RGB-component converter.
@Faginrs500
@Faginrs500 10 жыл бұрын
To suggest that these units have no lag is simply not true. These units create at least 2 frames of lag, coupled with the lag induced by most TV's at the HDMI input (which is going to be at least another 2 frames in nearly but a few cases) will mean lag is real.

Yeah the part with emulators is so true. I used to own a PS2, it got broke (You know how it is, wired controllers + idiots wanting to walk between your and you system = disaster.) Tried out a PS2 emulator...and it sucks. Audio was god awful, would experience lag... it didn't even live up to a quarter of fun that I had on the original console because it was so bad. And my PC at the time was above average computers, not high end gaming material, but not horrible either. I just prefer consoles because its obviously the best way to play those original games you know?

I'll admit when you said it was just up scaled i wasn't expecting it to look nearly as good, especially seeing you're older footage, due to room i use wii u's virtual console or a modded version of snesx9 with a real controller hooked up via a usb adapter, but that's blew me away Rich, i know myself what youtube does to videos after they're uploaded, you should maybe even upload a picture and link it to the description for the best image possible but thats a great upscaler, it really looks like a good HD emulation, if i had a good look at the raw image i'd probably be happy to say better than the Wii U's virtual console emulation in terms of how it looks. Be sure to show us some SNES footage when you've got that sorted out, i was a Nintendo kid. Thanks for the video, best footage I've ever seen from a genesis/megadrive console.

RF was not the first input method. Anyone remember those analog antenna cables with the "hooks" that you screw on?
@wrestletube1
@wrestletube1 10 жыл бұрын
That is the discription of the US RF I think. It was our UK ones where they just plug in the back with no screwing involved. The UK do use them screw ones for Sky and Cable television hookup cables but not for the Normal TV signal "that is now dead changed to Freeview Digital Normal TV now but we still use it for that signal." or gaming in the UK RF cables which is the same as the TV cables no screw. I think you got confused between different countries RF cables there as US is the one with the hooks so the one he showed with the hook in the video was the US RF cable you were talking about. The normal RF non screw one is the one from the UK region so doesn't count as an American country one. So basiclly in short the one you see there is the one you are in fact speaking of but the veriation which is also availble in th UK but in the UK cable format where you can switch between TV and Game mode and you plug the Male and Female ends up of the Antenna cable into the mating ends of the RF switch as well as the TV and it then routes both your game signal and your stations and you flick the switch to switch modes thats how the UK one worked anyway.
@jcrowley1985
@jcrowley1985 10 жыл бұрын
Daniel Cordell What I referenced predates the cable hookup rf. What I'm talking about has two little metal hooks that you used a phillips head screwdriver to attach to the tv. I think Atari 2600 used it and my Odyssey from 1972 has them. These: saundby.com/atari7800mod/images/xfrmrsmd.jpg

If I remember correctly, the red and blue signals are transferred over component video lines, but they are transferred in such a way that the correct amount of green can be calculated and generated by the TV, rather than having to be generated and sent over a wire by the source hardware. RGB just sends the Red, Green, and Blue signals discretely.

This is truly sad.... yet another supposed "professional" creating a video when they are in fact completely uninformed. I cannot believe you are actually recommending these TERRIBLE Ebay HDMI RGB Upscalers to these poor people that do not know any better! They are absolutely HORRIBLE and have terrible picture quality for an upscaler. The one and only HDMI RGB Upscaler worth buying is the XRGB Mini, period. It can be gotten for 300-350 bucks, which is DIRT cheap compared to most quality HDMI based RGB Upscalers which usually run for more than a grand. Once again, the uninformed is playing the part of the professional, trying to recommend this Ebay garbage to the masses. I thought you of all people would know better...

My friend and I got a SNES when they came out in the UK, he got his pretty much when they came out (me a little later) and he had a scart lead; my bedroom TV didn't even have scart, let alone the one my parents had in the living room. The difference was more than noticeable. It was like playing an Amiga on a proper monitor rather than on a TV. The Megadrive was a phenomenal machine. Great times for games.

The Scart adapter was even more useful than just the RGB throughput. It provided two way Composite and Stereo Audio (which could be used to connect to the VCR in order to record from TV and play recordings on the TV through one cable) as well as one way S-Video and RGB. So whatever output signal your device supported, be it Composite, S-Video or RGB, it could be trasmitted through Scart. You could even send Component video through it provided your TV could handle it.

Great video, and great work, Rich. I just want to point out one thing, though. Something a lot of people don't know is that you CAN display composite video through a TV that has component, without any adapters. Simply plugging in the yellow composite video cord into the green component jack will output composite video. Granted, it'll probably look awful and have a boatload of lag, but it DOES work.

Alot of new TVs still have it. Many manufacturers combined the Composite In with the Component In. Some brands(Like Samsung) will have(I believe the Green component in) double for the Yellow composite video. They do this to save money, also since the audio channels(White and Red) are the same on Composite and Component, they just have one of the video inputs double up.

RCA released some TVs in North America during the 80's with an "EIA Multiport" It's just a rebranded SCART connector, RGB capable. SCART is very similar to HDMI as a concept, combined video formats, included audio, even an auto-change function when a device is switched on. (assuming it's supported).

Talking about SCART: I still use it until this very day. My STB gives out a 1080i RGB-Signal over SCART and it is basically working as an anaolg Version of HDMI. My TV is a Philips 1080i-CRT-TV and it has no disadvantages compared to an LCD-TV (except for the size). Pretty cheap and effective setup

In US the composite (as well as RF of cause) us NTSC color coding. In Europe (except france and russia) we use to use PAL. PAL is more modern and composite with PAL actually look quite good. SCART uses a almost standard RGB output (but only Grey, Red and Green, the blue is calculated as Gray minus red and green), it also in addition have a composite and also a Composite feadback (allowing VCR to record whats on the TV). S-video is a Gray+colorcoding where the color coding is combined in one signal. A intresting thing. RF- everything is comined Composite - Al video, but no audio S-video - Grayscale and color-coding i separated SCART/RGB - Have all 3 different colors in separate cable. Also, SCART is not true RGB, but its really similar.

The difference between Component and SCART is that the sync signal is combined on component, and on SCART it's it own wire.

This box looks nice. I made some scart cables for snes and md with power supply and some resistors. The quality is great an the LCD upscales it perfectly. You can't use old scart with new tv, they will blink and propably damage the tv's scart circuit.

Glad I'm not the only one who remembers using NESticle or Genecyst. Those were among the first emulators I've ever used when I discovered emulation as a 10-11 years old. I even remember when ZSNES couldn't emulate transparency properly in the underwater sections of Burst Man's stage from Mega Man 7. Only way I could progress was to disable background layers. Also, does the name Zophar's Domain ring a bell to anyone?

Good video, you and your dad have a good thing going. I have been working on the same project myself on other systems, I am going to start with a Sega Saturn. I have done an s-video to HDMI Saturn already just for testing like you did here, and I am now waiting on "parts from overseas" like you. Just like back in the RGB to component days, nothing will be perfect though. I am glad you are making these videos to educate the people for when systems like this flood the internet. My personal favorite mod is RGB to VGA because there is no video conversion, just a frequency change. You still lose the light gun I assume, I have never tried it.

Rich please tell me you are going to get the stereo sound from the headphone jack when you do this mod to the genesis/megadrive 1. or can you already pull the stereo straight from the main board ? not all games came with stereo sound but some did. shame the genesis/megadrive 2 did not have stereo, at least not standard.

Gotta say that RGB SCART is fantastic and glad to see that you have a Retro Gaming Cables Limited RGB SCART cable for your Genesis, I may not own a Mega Drive but I own a PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, GameCube and Wii, I own except for the PlayStation 1 Retro Gaming Cables Limited RGB SCART CSYNC Cables for those consoles, before you ask I am looking to get a PlayStation 1 RGB SCART cable, what I like about the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 RGB SCART cables from Retro Gaming Cables is that not only are their cables shielded like all their cables but their PlayStation cables can come with a GunCon port perfect for Light Gun game fans

The Commodore 64 has that same DIN connector on the back, and I had that exact converter cable that you're using DIN to SCART, to connect the C64 to a TV/monitor. Btw, I like your enthusiasm in the video :)

I really love the "this is not about emulating" rant in the middle :) lovely video just to see the genesis (or mega drive as I knew it in europe) Growing up as an 80's/90's kid I have to say all the computer magazines always went on about how much better scart was than RF, as a kid I bought into it but to be honest I didn't notice any real difference back in the day... great to know about these little boxes though, I'm planning on buying all the old consoles and wasn't sure about connecting to a modern TV - my daughter's 8 now, and I really want her to experience gaming as we had it, though of course it would never be the same for her. Thanks for a great video and the memories though!

Ah man this is an awesome and exciting project, I can't wait to see everything in its final form. I might need to pick me up one of these when you start selling them lol, or send you mine to get the HD treatment. Even at this early on in its development I'm already in "Shut up and take my money!" mode.

A RF switch? God damn, Rich. I'm only twenty two and you're making me feel like a fossil over here. I remember I used to use RF switches for my SNES, N64, and other older consoles...while we're on that topic. Who here remembers turning to channel three to play video games?!

A large number of modern tvs still support composite, though they may not have the "yellow" port. Oftentimes you connect yellow to green on the composite in then change a setting on the TV for that input in order for the image to come through in color. Awesome video though.

Man, I'm only 16, but when I was younger(4-5 y-o), I had a TV in my room that only had RF, and the channels were on a turn dial like on a stove top. I remember playing Sonic 2 and Raiden on it. I think that's how I played on the N64 and Gamecube too. A few years ago I bought a composite cable for the Genesis, and thankfully good guy Nintendo made their A / V cables backwards/forwards compatible so I could use composite on the N64 (since the Gamecube came with composite, and I later got a slightly newer TV to play on)

Many modern TVs allow you to insert the yellow composite lead into the green component socket. This is not part of the component video standard but many TVs allow this. It is worth testing on your TV. Not as good as SCART but worth noting
