Are you looking for the best 308 round? We did Part 1 a few months ago ( • The Best 308 Ammo [10... ) and had such a great response, we wanted to do another accuracy test for 100 yard groups with a few other 308 rounds. So what is the best 308 ammo off the shelf?
We took 5 new rounds of 308 ammo to see what kind of 100 yard groupings we could get. You can fast forward to the time stamps below if you're interested in seeing a particular 308 round.
Start: 00:00
Remington Core-Lokt: 0:47
Federal Fusion: 2:15
Fiocchi Field Dynamics: 3:17
Hornady American Whitetail: 4:19
Norma Soft Point: 5:16
Summary: 6:30
Obviously which round you choose depends on which 308 ammo your gun likes and shoots best and what your shooting purpose is. A match round is different than a hunting round, and the best hunting round depends on how the bullet reacts when it hits the target, but hopefully this will help some.

Finally someone actually testing THEIR hunting rifle not some 2k loaner with another 2k loaner scope and to top it all off Actually shooting different loads to find the one their rifle likes. I have been preaching this for decades. Thanks for the best review video I’ve seen in a while

True, but, in a weird twist, I found that Hornady American Whitetail Interlock 250 gr. and Norma Dedicated Hunting, 150 gr. are eerily similar when it comes to point of impact.

I purchased a 308 Cascade. Clean and polished the Barrel without firing a shot. Bought a Badland muzzle break / blast deflector. Purchased a Arken scope and Arken low profile rings. I then had a FFL guy dial scope in. He shot 8 times total 1 shot on paper 1 adjustment 7 shots in 3 shot groups. 1 for good measure. Grouping dimes at 100 yards. All with Norma white 150 grains. Thanks for your vidz. Your the reason I chose CVA.

My middle son said to me when we were loading up outside the truck, "dad, this was all they (gun shop) had left, so I got um, I don't know if they're any good or not" I had the feeling he was hoping to get my approval. Anyway, he bought .270 Win. Federal Fusion 130gr.. I'm impressed.. he has gotten 5 whitetails between 75 yards and 175 yards with that one box. Enjoyed the video. I've shot the Remington Corloks , Federal Fusion and Hornady American Whitetail in my own rifle and found my own results to be similar to your own. For a mid priced cartridge it would have been of interest to have seen how Winchesters Deer Season XP compared to this group of cartridges. However, during the ammo shortages which have taken place I fully understand the need to purchase what you can find.

Just came back from my hunting trip. I shot the Remington 180 grain. We had at least 40mph wind and my shots were quite off. First shot was always too low and second adjustment wast too high. It happened twice at 400 yards and one at 200 yards. I didn’t have a clue what grains are all about until researching and watching your part 1. My M700 was zeroed in with the blue federals at 200 yards. Thank you for the content. I will try the Norma soft points.

I've enjoyed you videos comparing the different rounds. I shoot a 40 year old Tikka Model 55 deluxe and it loves the Core Lokt 180's. I've shot sub MOA with this round. It does really well with all heavier rounds, hates 150's. On the other hand, I've also got a Savage Axis XP II that loves the Federal Fusion 150's. Not as accurate as my Tikka, but it's a Stainless Steel rifle I take out when the weather's nasty. Again really great reviews and it's all trial and error when it comes to different rounds

Something that a friend of mine who shoots 1000 yards plus told me. Targets like you are using are use those as well. But by the fault if your gun was a laser you would have a 1 inch margin of error because the red dot is about an inch. He prefers to choose a small part on the target such as the left corner of that square around the red dot. I tried that in my groups did tighten up.

Back before I started hand loading. Every time I bought a new rifle. I would get as many different kinds of ammo as I could find and test them on the bench. Some guns liked Federal, some liked Winchester or Hornady. But I never owned a gun that didn’t shoot the poorest with REM factory ammo. And I love Remington rifles. The reason I had to start reloading was when a friend and I bought 300 Rem Ultra mags when they first came out. Nobody but Remington was making ammo for it. I bought it to be a 300-400 yard gun. And nothing REM made would do better than 21/2 or 3 inches at 100 yards in either gun. I started hand loading and worked up a couple loads that would do 2 inches at 300 yard consistently

You need a one good spot weld. Install or put a Bradley cheek Risker on that rifle. The two separate in the dead center target is because your spot weld had shifted give you two nice separate group. Once you get a cheek rise and a good alignment with your scope and your eye you well definitely give one spot weld. And one tiny little group. Try it you'll like it.

I can answer this question hands down. Corelokt Soft Point 180gr. Not the pointed one, the round one. Everything is in the woods and under 100yds anyway. The blunt bullet gives a way bigger shock and I've never had a deer go more than 20yds. About half have dropped where they stood. Between my dad and I, dozens of deer and never had a fail. Father in law shoots a 270 with with 150 Corelokt, again round nose and he has had the same experience and with his son as well. His son switched to a pointed 150gr in 270 and had them go a long way. It's any gun that you cam shoot with a blunt bullet does absolutely amazing in white tail. Now if we were shooting 300yds plus it probably wouldn't be. But for the mountains of western PA a slower blunt tip bullet is great for elk, bear. And deer. For bear I'd stick with 180gr or more. PA has 2 or 3 of the largest 5 black bear taken in The world and Siberia has the spots. I know 875lbs ish, 850ish, and several in the 700s. A guy got one 700 by me and it is just massive. It's not uncommon to see 550+ taken. Mixture of a lot of food and not being allowed to use dogs or bait to hunt has allowed them to grow like crazy. They go through cornfields and gorge themselves.

Sad to see Remington is not any more accurate than it used to be. The bullet performance great. The difference between accuracy and bullet performance or two different things. So I’ll look for something that does both. And for those who don’t know the American white tail is Hornady‘s version of the corrlockt. It’s a locked cup and core as well.
@ReviewThisThing

It may have just been that it was heavier?

@@ReviewThisThing hard to say. When I first started hunting I shot for accuracy and most everything shot better than fcorelockt. With federal owning Remington ammo now I was hoping it would get better. And it may have. 180s have never shot as good as 150/165 for me. I’d try the 150s next just to see if you can find them. After terrine results with deer season xp 150 I started researching bullet construction. That shot amazing but expanded so violently I never had a pass through. So I stay with locked and bonded bullets now. I may try copper this year. Out of what you shot today is hit with the Hornady or the fusion.

I’d like to see what Hornady Superformance 150 grain SST does with your rifle. I’m willing to bet that that would be your choice with the one shot one kill with your rifle. I was planning on the Norma but after seeing what the Hornady does out of my rifle and the damage, I’ll spend a little more for less tracking of downed deer.

I am a proponent of 165 grains as a real bakance point weight in .30-06. I do like 150 grain, but not at full speed I like that weight operating at or around 2700 FPS muzzle velocity to somewhat reduce the excess expansion and excess carcass damage that just goes up with more speed.
