It seems like this company, Coturn, at least wants to continue to improve their product, and is taking proactive steps at continuing to squish any issues you may have had. Hell, the Sound Burger competition may speed up their efforts too.

Kudos for them to keep the 18650 cells on sockets. That's great for repairability, given batteries WILL at one point degrade, and a standard size like that, not soldered even, is just the best option bar none. Sure... A separate door for that alone would be better but only marginally, considering it opens up with screws only and then you also access the belt, another thing easy to access and replace. And yes the headphone jack is very welcome as well.

This video is a perfect demonstration of why spring loaded tonearms are not used on better quality turntables; you usually find them combined with inexpensive ceramic cartridges with sapphire styli. Even if the tracking force on a spring balanced arm was right on the money at the correct height, the problem is that many records are not perfectly flat, and a radial warp would cause the tracking force to vary from too high to too low throughout the rotation of the record.
@BG101UK

Those were my thoughts as well. Also, I'd expect this to be even worse with record changers! The old BSR ones usually had spring-loaded tonearms.

Yeah but it does mean you can play the record on an uneven surface, which is much more likely to be the case with a portable player. My Ion IPT-01 can play a record while fully vertical because of the sprung arm. These are not "better quality" turntables and are not intended to be

As a child of the 1980s I really enjoy the content of your videos. You talk about the things that I lusted after in my youth and you show how they work, take them apart and repair them...all the stuff that makes my audio geek eyes light up. But you're also up-to-speed on modern technologies so you're able to straddle the worlds of the 1980s and 90s and the world of today, which is perfect for devices like the Coturn CT-01 and the Sound Burger. Keep up the fantastic work!

That’s good of you to revise your video. I have nothing against Coturn and I’m sure 4g tracking force won’t chew up your records. With that in mind, a 450gbp turntable should track within the cartridge specs. Coturn needs to have a quality standard or they’ll never survive.

Another important difference between the Soundburger and Coturn is that while the first has adopted the normal overhang, the latter is underhung which makes me wonder how does it behave in terms of distortion...
@bryede
@bryede Жыл бұрын
Yes, I noticed the apparent lack of overhang and cartridge offset angle which means the tracking error is going to be very high on the Coturn.
@roflo77

You can hear it in the sound comparison. Illustrates how important that factor is, considering they use the same cartridge (even with tracking force differences)
@donmoore7785
@donmoore7785 Жыл бұрын
With some research, it became obvious that the force generally needs to be measured at the exact height of record suface. I thought that your scale might be designed to mimic the thickness of a record, and you are supposed to use it right on the platter. But the platter of the CT-01 is quite small. It does look like the force still is too high based on your testing. Kudos on the quick edit and reupload. Hopefully COTURN will be back to comment.
@theol1044

What immediately kills this thing for me, disregarding the price, is that straight tonearm without any offset for the cartridge. It's sad to see that the fundamentals of turntable desing seem do get increasingly forgotten (for the looks?). Just look at the AT for comparison.
@johni1842
@johni1842 Жыл бұрын
If you look closely, the cartridge is mounted on a slight angle to the tonearm. So there was some thought and design considered here...
@theol1044
@theol1044 Жыл бұрын
@@johni1842 That's what I had been asking myself, and for that reason I now had another look at the company's home page. It was there that it dawned on me: Not only *is* the cartridge dead-straight on the photos there, this is also an underhung tonearm (effective lenght of the arm shorter than pivot-spindle distance), as can clearly be seen in the video from 10:42. An underhung tonearm is a fundamentally flawed design in itself, and only good for 'turntablism'.

229 Euros for the Soundburger? Cripes, I should buy some and sell them online. They're selling for NTD$5800 in Taiwan, which is only 179 Euros. I bought my "portable" record player (Numark PT-01 Scratch) for it's compactness and use in a tiny apartment, not to carry around. Those two look good, but somehow don't look as sturdy.

I have and use the new Sound Burger since two months now and I LOVE IT ! I can't tell if the speed changed over time as I don't have what you got for testing, but my ears are happy... :) Looking at the Coturn, it looks awesome too, but I'm a bit concerned about the arm over time. Like you demonstrated it, but also the push/release/push/closing mechanism that I'm a bit afraid over the usage and years to come... I might be totally wrong tho. I really like that there's a competitor tho! I'm wondering if AudioTechnica will improve the 2022 SB version (probably eh?). PS: Let the notifications on as I almost missed this video ;)

Great video as usual, despite the microphone clickety. Given the non-1982-ness we find ourselves in... what is the use case for these things? As a piece of design it is pretty awesome, and the specs seem surprisingly good. But I am trying to picture a person with this and some records under their arm on their way to... where? It's not just the tech that has changed, but our whole relationship with recorded music and each other.

it's nice this cheaper player has the ability to swap an AT cart - .. those spring loaded arm players are ancient tech..they work well in most cases but you'll never get the same tracking force from one to another.. it's a bit random due to the nature of the spring they used and the physical nature of it. The spring arms also have a tendency to fly off the record with high amplitude cut recordings - like a disco or hip hop 12". at least in my experience.. i always have to put a penny on the head.

This has been a very welcome video as I'm considering adding a budget record player to my home office (I have a larger audio rig, but no space for it at my HO). The Coturn is definitely more stylish and sophisticated in design than the SB, but can't bring myself to plunk almost 500€ (plus import) for such a thing. As long as my records don't get destroyed anything is ok with me (I'm used to tracking forces of 2.5g or less)... I think I'd rather go find some used thing on eBay. xD

Based on the price difference alone, I would gladly take the *Sound Burger* over the *Coturn CT-01,* as well. But as it currently stands, I play/listen to my very modest collection of vinyl on the *Anabas Gp-n3r.* And speaking of said portable record player, because I purchased it directly from a shop in Japan & because of that it is my understanding the adaptor it came with it (100V ~ 50/60HZ 8W) can not be used here in Canada, might any of you know which adaptor I could use in it’s place? Instead of having to play it like I do now, by using 6 D cell battery’s. Thanks in advance to those of you who may be able to help me out, as well.

I'm guessing the adapter output is 9v. The output specification should be listed on the adapter along with a diagram of the polarity of the connector (which part is positive and which is negative). A locally purchased multi-adapter is likely to suffice (check it matches or exceeds the output amperage of the original), but make sure the voltage and polarity are correct before plugging it in. I hope this helps.
@HalNeinThousand
@HalNeinThousand Жыл бұрын
Well, judging by Techmoan's video on it, the power adapter is an 8V 350mA power supply with a center positive lead. As long as you find an adapter that phisically fits (same outer and inner dimensions) and is also 8V center positive, with at least 350mA output, you're good. The current (A) can be much higher with no damage to the unit.

@@HalNeinThousand - First off, I truly do appreciate your kindness in answering my question. And yes, you are correct, the back of the adaptor does read : *100V ~ 50/60Hz 8W* *8V-350mA* So taking what you have advised, off I will go out into the wilderness to try and find an adaptor most suitable for my player. Wish me luck. Cheers!!!

You all might already know this but the wow and flutter can often be made better by simply making sure your record is on the table 100% centered. My point is that the center peg might not be exact, or maybe a bit wobbly, the record center hole might be a bit off. So carefully put your needle on the record and watch it, if it go back and forth / side to side you will have more wow, so you have to tap the record on the edge gently until you have no more side to side swing.

Isn't the wow and flutter a function of the concentricity of the grooves to the spindle. Most vinyl grooves are not concentric to the center hole and you can see that by watching the tonearm sway back and forth. Would that show up on both those players as an incorrect measurement? You can get full size turntables like an Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB for less than €400. Compared to that, the Coturn is a bit of a "hipster toy" only really excelling if you absolutely, positively need to take a turntable often between different locations. It's not as if you're ever going to use ANY turntable like a sort of boombox anyway, so it seems like a niche product.

If weight is more the stylus won't be able to more freely so you have to compromise on the higher notes.. I believe that is the reason..so spring loaded is not good.

At half the price the sound burger was better in terms of sound, I could feel spatiality in the sound and also high freqs were better defined with it compared to the Coturn. While the Coturn has a case and better design wich also helps with the portability I feel paying double for worse sound is not worth it. Also forgot about the tracking force issue wich is a deal breaker for those who want to preserve their records, 3.5g would be the maximum I would ever apply to a record (and I wouldn't be really comfortable doing that)

Still the sound burger seems a much better choice to me. Spring loaded tonearms as already mentioned in the comments is not a good design let alone for a turntable with a minimal platter like these, and also as you demonstrate a very slight difference in height makes a big difference in tracking force so wobbly records will have various pressure values throughout their surface so it is a no for me. Cheers from Greece.

I dont get why you were charged duty on a resend- didnt they collect the sales vat (which is what duty is equal to, so for items entering uk, 20%) on the first one they sent you?

That cartridge's specs want the tracking force between 3.5g and 5g......... so a little higher, but normal still.

I'm sure I saw a USB port on the coturn when you took the bottom off, I wonder what it would be used for seeing you can't actually access it without removing the base?

i must say the sound quality on either device is surprisingly good. Warm rich sounds from such small devices. Nice video, dispite the mic issues!

To be honest, you could have been playing the same exact audio sample and just switching the phono shown in the video-they sounded that close. But I guess that's not entirely unexpected with the same cart.

I was wondering what happened, the original got pulled down while I was still watching it haha. I was luckily at the roundup so I didn't miss much, but I figured some new information must have come to light after uploading it.

love the massive irony of CDs being relegated to propping up a tool for checking stylus force...

it looks beautiful, but the sound burger is a cheaper and overall better option still. you're paying double for a slim design.and you can get a headphone amplifier that'll turn that line out into a headphone out for like $20.

Is it just me, or is the Coturn outputting a monaural signal? Either that or the stereo separation is just not as wide as it is on the Audio-Technica. I was definitely noticing more of a stereo field coming from the Sound Burger than I heard coming from the CT-01.

I don't care about vinyl records the slightest, but I do really appreciate Techmoan's videos where he in detail goes through tech gadgets like in this video :)

If you want to reduce the tracking force a little you could trim off plastic from the stylus mount and remove the stylus guard.

How can a turntable designed in the 2020's possibly be off speed by more than the accuracy of the micro controller crystal?

The rest of the components have design tolerances of their own. The timing signal had to be converted into the input of the motor, which has its own design tolerance, and then the control loop which monitors the motor speed and adjusts the speed has its own tolerances. You could allways make it more accurate, but it would be in turn be more expensive.

Both are beautiful pieces of engineering. Practicality though? How is their usage envisioned? I couldn't imagine ever putting my vinyl on anything so, well, tippy.

So if it's a spring loading issue, doesn't that allow for an easier fix?

In this day and age of digital portable music, if I was going to go to the expense of a portable vinyl player, then I'd pay the extra and go for the Coturn, especially since it has the headphone jack

In this day and age of digital portable music, I would not be buying a portable vinyl player. For that price you could buy one hell of an mp3 player.
