imo ri thank you! I will get some new ones out soon...I’m in the middle of a major remodel (different type of CAD!) and have been out of pocket. Stay tuned, and thank you for your kind words.

Your tutorial is PRECIOUS.. I have just started with zbrush and I mainly want to design ornamental objects rather than creature or anatomy..I was looking for a clean beginner tutorial about ornamental designing in Zbrush but most of the tutorials are about character design no matter free or premium. Your tutorial was totally and exactly what I was looking for without anything extra.your small tips throughout the video were the key and your clean accent helped a lot to understand slowly. Thank you for the help.. Today is Christmas 2020 and it is like a gift for me.. MERRY CHRISTMAS DEAR..❤️❤️

Scott Comber, thanks so much! I’ve started to redo some of these videos, but KZbin won’t let you replace them with updates...you have to put up a whole new video. I also have a new way of doing scrolls. I’m putting out a Christmas/holiday project maybe tomorrow...stay tuned!

Thanks again for these tutorials! I commented on a different video. My question on this one is an issue with the symmetry in sculpting. I followed this tutorial and everything was working perfectly. THen I ran into a problem with the sculpting. So for example if I am using the clay buildup brush, it will build up on the side that I have the cursor and then other opposite side it will detract. The same with damien standard. Wherever the main cursor is, the brush will act properly and then on the opposite side, where it should mirror, it actually produces the opposite effect for that particular brush. Any Help?? If you need to see pics I can send along. Thanks!!!

Thanks, Jedi! That made my day. I used to be a tech trainer at Apple, and did the Toolbar videos for SketchUp. I love CAD, and ZBrush has changed the way I design jewelry...so much fun. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKrNnZSdZpqDgqc

Kat Adair I just ordered a 3D dlp printer and have been watching your videos to learn ZBrush, seems like a jewelry design method accessible to general public now with printers coming down in price

Jedi, you made the right choice! What kind did you get? DLP printers have awesome resolution and are a little faster than the SLA types. The build platforms are a little smaller than SLA, but if you’re mostly doing jewelry that’s not a problem. Are you casting the pieces yourself? There are some things to know about the burnout if you are...it’s a longer burnout, similar to burnouts for organic material or hard wax like Kate Wolf’s carving waxes. Also important to have good airflow in your kiln...residual ash seems to be the biggest problem. Also, using an investment designed for resin (R&R Plasticast works well), and not burning out too hot (not enough oxygen at high temperatures, I use 1350° F for about 3-1/2 hours with the button facing down). I will occasionally print with castable resin, smooth it with fine sanding sticks if any areas are not perfectly smooth, then make an RTV mold from it to shoot waxes which will cast more quickly. I have also started adding the sprues in ZBrush, and adding the supports manually so I have control over the contact points. The main reason for failed prints or flakes in the tank is that there are unsupported areas of the model. I have another video here about creating the support structure using ZSpheres, but it probably needs to be updated. Also, going into the process assuming that I would get “perfection” was a mistake. I’ve learned not to be afraid of sanding the models a little (a four-way buffing nail file from a local beauty supply works well), and doing some finishing after casting. I will usually make 3 prints of a model, clean one up before casting and cast all three. I’ll pick the best one, clean it up the rest of the way and make a mold from it, then shoot waxes. Of course, that works well on pieces you’ll be casting more than one. The wax models made from a clean cast make it so much easier to finish. Another project I haven’t done yet but have figured out in ZBrush is to make a hollow silhouette die for a hydraulic press. Modeling a pendant with no undercuts, then printing it hollow (uses less resin), then filling it with cheap resin. And also sandcasting and cuttlefishing casting master models. The possibilities are really endless! What kind of jewelry are you doing, or are you interested in doing? Congratulations on your new printer...that’s very exciting!

I ordered an Anycuic Photon based on the reviews and the level of detail its capable of doing at 500$ pricetag. Ill likely invest in a Form 2 or some type of higher end DLP later down the road. IVe also looked at the Moai it seems really promising and there is one fella on the forum that is getting good results with casting rings in gold and silver. I was reading his feedback and he did mention long 10 hr or even more burn out times! He has been using various types of casting resins like WaxCast and Funtodo Cast and a few others. Seems like alot of different factors are at play when getting a good print (and also a good cast), like exposure times (for DLP), even the ambient air temperatures. Im sure being out here in Hawaii with the Humidity maybe even will affect things so im assuming it will be alot of tinkering before they start coming out clean. I have access to a casting facility here on island but also may get the equipment to vacuum cast since it involves so much adjusting to get the casts to burn out clean. Im planning to create pendants in sterling and setting stones in them. I really like how zbrush allows for such an easy organic flow with its shapes. And that method of using the RTV mold to shoot more traditional casting waxes into it seems like a really good idea. Also I have a tutorial request if you are up for it. Im curious to try making similar shapes in ZBrush that are found in the Maori bone carving necklaces . I live in Hawaii and we have alot of polynesian style art everywhere and I could see doing a similar design, but casting in silver with various stone settings : s3files.core77.com/blog/images/2011/07/0bapfeat01.jpg i.pinimg.com/originals/90/97/c7/9097c7211023f051840376b59f679703.jpg Im assuming its laying out the zspheres in a general shape (like how it weaves over itself and into itself) and then sculpting from that, but curious if you have any suggestions

Jedi, I can see several different ways to accomplish that, and ZSpheres may not be the answer. Although you could get a basic shape from that, starting out with a drawing that’s vector-based from something like Adobe illustrator or even an alpha from Photoshop would work. Do you have access to either of those pieces of software?

Hi Kat, Thank you so much for the video! I have a question, why don't we use the ringmaster plugin to build a ring and then just use the mandrel that come with, instead spending time to smooth and extend the cylinder. also if we use mandrel we can chose the actual ring size. does it leads difference results by using these two methods ? Thank you!

Hey Deniz! It is very close. When COVID hit, my father moved out of his assisted living and into my art/recording studio...it was supposed to be for a couple months but lasted almost a year. We live in Texas...when that freeze hit last week, he moved back to the assisted living because they had power and water, and we didn’t. He decided to stay. 😃 I have two lessons left, and then it’s done! Www.zbrushjewelry.com.
