I wonder why the orchard couldn't be fenced off, or paddocks made for the horses, rather than destroying it completely. It pained me to see the beautiful old apple trees cut down, also as this is low lying land trees will help in keeping the land less waterlogged. Did it occur to anyone else that the orchard would have also provided an income as the apples could have been sold as they are or pressed for cider or apple juice? As money was so tight it seemed odd to me that this potential income stream was missed. I also felt a bit sad that no trace of the original building made the cut and the lovely old red bricks were rendered over & ended up looking a bit like a Benidorm timeshare.

Sad to see the apple orchard come down. With as many acres as they have, it seems like it couldn't all be orhard an they could have made some plan that didn't involve their entire removal. It seemed odd that the original barns needed to come down, as well. I hope they're able to start the livelry stable. It seems to me that was their aim all along. You don't build a stable for 10 or twelve horses when you only have two and that's your entire plan. kind of an odd way of going about it.

Clearly the lady was a grafter and deserved her dream but I think her decisions were blinkered (pun intended). Why destroy an ancient orchard and several useful outbuildings, both of which add value and potential income for the sake of a couple of horses? Fence them off! The plot unravels when the development of Buckingham palace for two horses appear. It was never about a couple of horses or respecting ancient agricultural land and the outbuildings but the massive livery business. In planning terms they are exceedingly fortunate if they got away with this. Like I said, she deserved her dream but there is far more suitable land and property available. Not much in this story about renovation more like the losses and there were quite a few. I still wish them well and hope their future decisions are more considered.

Imagine if the original Bramley apple sauce tree was chopped to make way for some sort of renovation and this was the last of the 300 yr old English apples left of that era? Stupid is was stupid does. At the turn of the 19th century there were enough apple variety’s to span 2yrs worth for each days the year, now just a hand full. The original bramley apple tree is still going strong and so important to English heritage that a couple of samples were taken from it to regrow into bigger orchards around the country. So not all is lost..i wonder if George would revisit this home to see how its been lived in 2021

I don't believe that anyone 'deserves' to have their dream come true. I mean, what makes this or that person 'deserve' that? But I don't think this couple deserves to have their dream home. Some people need to stay in the status they were born in. Buying stuff doesn't make you into a custodian of heritage (inheriting does) - and this couple just proves it. They want to live in the countryside, then proceed to buy it up and destroy everything, not replacing it with anything better.

If they had any brains or if they had the instinctive conservative instincts of people who inherit their property rather than buy it, they would have preserved that orchard and turned it into a profitable business. If it was a commercial orchard that was not making money, fine, turn the property into a destination. Have an apple fair: picnic or camp under the trees, have your wedding reception among the apple blossoms - pick your own apples to take home, have a hand at squeezing your own apple juice, participate in cider-making and get a jug of cider in return at Christmas, locals could make pies or preserves and they could be judged and sold at the fair... It could have been quite a fun day out or weekend festival experience for many families, and could have made them money and saved the orchard. People who come from inherited property understand these things and adapt their inheritance to new times, so they preserve the land and enhance local culture. Also just demolishing that barn was stupid. There was plenty of old wood there that could have been recycled into floors or furniture for the house. These people know the price of everything and the value of nothing. He should have got a proper job to support his family. She should have given up the horses and got a job that allowed her to have a normal life - she could always visit horses or volunteer at a stable, cost-free. These people are simply low-class, and building a house with an oversized master bedroom won't buy them culture or sense. Nobody will be sorry if this ends up bankrupting them and forcing them into a council house -where their type fits best.
@brianduffy1338
@brianduffy1338 2 жыл бұрын
Your derisive (even snooty) tone is quite off-putting. Your notion that those that inherit are somehow better and have conservative instincts is quite erroneous and is injected with all the class and entitlement this might imply. Your labelling of "low class" and invocation of all the "shoulds" is offensive. Yes, the orchards could have been preserved. Yes, they were rather naive (not stupid) and were taken for a ride by crooks. Yes, it is likely they had hopes of establishing a livery business at the outset. Yes, their values and dreams and ideas of festivity are different than yours. So what. Your idea of culture, sense and worth and your bad wishes for them are mean-spirited and reflect more about you (in the negative) than this couple any day.
