I just came upon this video.... 2 yrs late....Thank you for showing this in such a basic informative manor... no sweeps, no pivots.... just sight aim shoot... I have tried CTE in the past, could never get past the pivot.... But i will try this and practice it.... it just makes too much sense.... Thanks again... Vince

It is never too late. I also used to use the pivot or sweep but for some reason it never felt right. The moving after you align the body to the shot didn’t make any sense. Thanks for showing that CTE is a perceptive method and the ghost ball system is also based in perception.....all previous teachers of CTE failed to be able to fully explain this complicated method. After each shot you must make all these detailed mental measurements and then stroke the cue ball which ends up as a poke, not a stroke, which is the MOST important part of making the object ball. The best players adapt and develop the ghost ball technique and perfect their stroke and are thinking about perfect stroking. They practice sighting with a ghost ball and practice, practice............

Great explanation of CTE accept for the fact that for a left cut the A should be on the inside ABC (L) and for right cuts A should be to the side (R) CBA that you are cutting the ball.

In CTE that I've learned is always ABC with the cut direction defined. Also, the term edge is the edge of the cue ball to the center of a line in the OB. This video is fractional aimin, not CTE as first described by Hal Houle. I'm not knocking the video at all. I'm just saying there are diffrent concepts out there.

I like you took the pivot out of the system. Going to work on your modified system. I like both views and the lines as you did (you asked which we liked better). Would be nice if you did a video where you just shot a bunch of shots, all 15 balls on table, using the system. Never manually moving the cue ball. Each shot telling us what aim point you used (perception). I would assume you are adjusting your bridge length a bit depending on how far the cue ball and object ball are apart?

For most shots I try to stay center CB but if I need to spin the CB, I will still line up as if it was a center CB. My CTE focus on alignment to the shot and for 3/4 and 1/4 cut shot, I will aim and focus on the contact point as my target on the OB. For 1/2, I aim and focus at the edge of the OB. If you're unsure of it's A B C hit, what helps train your mind when in the moment?

With my version of CTE, you have to have to do the benchmark shot I was showed on the first CTE video. There is really no short cut in pool unfortunately. Once you practice the benchmark shots, you will start recognizing the cut angles. Remember with my version of CTE, I still use the contact points. Memorize the benchmarks, SVB said it best, “shoot the shot until you can’t miss it not shoot the shot till you can make it”. Hope this helps.

@@playpool12fyao I meant as an objective reference to CTE because perception can change but not your sight of where ferrule is aimed. I just use the 2 lines to visualize path of pocket to OB, OB to CB and get down center to center of them and pivot according to ferrule edge

I'm still having problems trying to determine if a shot is 1/4 ball or 1/2 ball hit regardless of the distance. I'm not sure what I am to be looking at to make that determination.

I would start with bench mark shots to actually see what a 1/2 and 1/4 ball shot is and where the contract point is, it will be easier to determine the difference. Also memorize the triangle the shot makes. Place the benchmark shots and now memorize the triangle it makes. One line from the CB to the OB, another line OB to the Center of the pocket, and the last line CB to the Pocket. With this benchmark, you will notice the triangle is very different. Once memorized, the triangle, no matter where the OB and CB is you will see the triangle and this can help you determine what cut it is. Also if you understand trigonometry and geometry, no matter the size of the triangle and the angle are the same, that is will always be the cut shot for a 1/2 or 1/4 cut. Not always. For instance if the cut shot is edge to edge, the center of the cue ball will be on the ‘ghost ball’ center. My version of CTE is a perception of two imaginary line to help get body alignment to the shot. Also when cutting a 1/4 cut shot, the edge of the cue ball will be on ‘A’ or ‘C’ depending on if you are shooting the object ball to the left or right pocket, the cue ball center will be also at ghost ball center. Seems simple enough; however, can you explain that when hitting a half ball hit, you aim the right edge of the cue ball to “B” of the object ball and the center of the cute ball to the left edge of the object ball But when you hit a 3/4 ball, you aim the right edge of the cue ball to the “C” of the object ball but you still aim the center of the cue ball to the left edge of the object ball (like a half ball hit?). So you’re saying the for both a half ball hit and a 3/4 ball hit, the center of the cue ball will be aimed at the edge of the object ball? Please explain. Thank you

You are correct. I line up the CB edge to A, B or C and line up the center CB to the edge of OB for 1/2 and 3/4 ball cut. Just remember these are visual and body alignment. I still use contact points for aiming. CTE just give me the best alignments and it makes me focus on only 5 cuts. Hope this helps and please share.

What happens if the angle is a 36.5 degree shot vs 30 degrees? Does the half ball hit still apply? There's an almost infinite fractions of lines to hit on the object ball.

Regardless of what the cut angle is, every cut shot had a contact point. CTE is a perception for me to line up to a shot. Yes there is an infinity of shots to perform when playing pool. You might have all the time in the world to memorize the cut shot for every single angle possible in pool. I started playing pool late and I needed a system for me to make more balls. Also pockets on a pool table are not a one to one ratio, meaning the OB is 2 1/4 and the pocket size is 2 1/4, there is room for error. Some pool table you can hit a diamond off and still make the shots. That just mean you can aim for a 1/2 ball but the cut angle is really 36.5 or 36.6 and so on. If the OB is close enough to the pocket, a 3/4 cut shot for hitting the back side of the pocket might be able to make with a 1/4 cut. The OB might hit the rail and the faces of the pocket but it still fell in. I don’t worry about what if it’s 36.5, 36.4, or 36.6. Where is the contact point and how am I going to line up for the shot. For your question if the cut angle is 36.5, I will always check where is the contact point then line my body alignment to see if I need to line up for a half ball or 1/4 hit. My eyes will always stay focused on the contact point and if it looks like a 1/4 hit my body will line up for a 1/4 ball hit. Again regardless if it’s a 1/2 or 1/4, I always look for the contact point. Hope this helps.

The best example of different cut shot angles explained is from Dr. Dave’s website. If you look at his examples on different degrees of cut angles, you will notice my 5 cut shot angles (fraction of the cue ball covering the object ball). For a 70 and 90 degree cut, from Dr. Dave’s website, it is very close to an edge to edge and is an edge to edge cut shot. I would line up for a edge to edge cut shot. I use my CTE as a perception where 2 imaginary lines are “going to the CB”. Why mess with so many cut angles when most looks the same. Also the pocket are not 1 to 1 ratio meaning the pocket are 4.25 to 4.5 inch big and the OB is 2.25 inch big. Some table you can hit the first diamond and the OB will still go in. I preach to only practice 5 different cut angles and just use them. Hope this helps, please subscribe if haven’t already and please share. I was just pointing out that ghost ball is the final answer, and all systems are just looking for a "cheat" to the ghost ball or some more accurate thing to aim at or visualize... FOR ME though, that "system" aimers point to ghost ball in their visualizations and explanations, reinforces my original aiming method as valid, direct ghost ball. Since I need no "method" and have the answer already visualized, I watch "system" videos for entertainment or to find some possible reason to switch to enhance my game or learn something new... But I never do, I just feel more validated in directly visualizing ghost ball and requiring no "system." It's a fun topic for me. Another fun one for me is seeing how some people choose to use backhand english, which I see you do not use.

I totally agree. I use the ghost to get the contact point. I use the my CTE to set my body alignment. I use to use back hand English but I rarely use use it because I been shooting with a carbon shaft where the pivot point for BHE is too long. I still use BHE if I power up just because it just feel natural to me. Thank you again for commenting.

I think it’s different. I was an instructor before teaching young Solider to become aircraft electricians and I had no degree in teaching. I think teachers are book smart but a technical instructor is someone with experience in that field. Nothing against teacher, my younger sister has a Masters in teaching, they just love what they do regardless if they have hands on experience. Hope this helps and please share.

Many of pros don’t use an aiming system for some reason. I know Shane (SVB) has his own, Darren Appleton was using a system and from what I heard, Tyler Styer uses CTE. I just use my version of “CTE” to cut the learning curve. I have been playing since 2009 and I said to myself there has to be a faster way to put balls in the pocket not just by hitting over a million shots to be good.
