My father was a tool and die maker, graduating from college in 1932. I was born when he was 43 and grew up with modifications on everything around the garage. I still have many of his custom tools and cherish them as you do your fathers.

Thanks for the idea! I think I will make an aluminum extension handle that slides over the end of the Chuck key. I will round both of the ends and drill out the ends two different sizes for different chuck keys. Got me motivated for today!

Filling in the whole story of this tool’s history and every little modification, and by whom, adds an immense value to it. Who ever buys this will be doing so because of knowing its history, and association with the Peterson family. I love the story, its not just a survivor tool, it IS a story with such a human connection.

Golly, Mr. Pete! I even got emotional watching that! I had the opportunity 4 years ago to dismantle my great-uncle’s basement shop in Lombard. It had not been disturbed since 1982. It's so nice to see people who have a history that they can keep track of. I spent my life moving around the country so history is lost for me for the most part. I have to live it through others sharing, so thanks for that. It reminds me of my days in machine shop class in high school. I finally got my first lathe a couple years ago when I drove from WI to Rockford to pick it up. You remind us all that we are care takers of these pieces of history. My cousin Dave Hall has a drafting firm in Ottawa. I'm overdue for a trip to Streator & Ottawa to see the family. But the RV needs some attention before I can make the trip.

Glad to see your enjoyment. Tom and I had told Matt that we were friends and this was your dad's lathe. Told Matt the story of how Dad and I met you and carried the lathe out of your basement shop. As you know, a guy just can't keep everything. As much as I liked the lathe as I told you we got a ten inch SB with quick change gears. Remember the Trucut saws will fit on the SB undercutting. Good seeing the video. Hope to see you at an auction soon. Merry Christmas.

It's nice that you can follow your family's (former) property as it travels around the county. I received a legal library from my father. I remember his law books open on his desk while he was working, and I can still smell the tobacco residue from his nearby pipe smoking on them, and I can still see his margin notes written in pencil on the pages so that I also have reminders of his thinking. I know that waves of nostalgia can wash over a person through these material reminders of the past.

My "basket case" South Bend 9a is a floor standing model just like your Dad's. It too has plates mounted to the bottom of the legs and pedestal. If I ever get his one running, I might have to make some of the brackets that your dad devised for his lathe. Won't need the ones for the chip pan, because this one has the original SB chip pan mounted between the floor standing legs and the lathe. MJ
