In which I head back out to Parting of the Ways in Sweetwater County, Wyoming on a cool Saturday morning to take care of some unfinished business. The video which alerted me to the fallen-over state of the marker: • Oregon Trail

As long as there's one person who cares, these spots will be remembered....🇺🇸🕊️

I really appreciate that you took the time to fix the marker. Very honorable of you.

I’ve seen your work, and I appreciate you taking the time to sit at historical marker back up. Was there after you in August.

For anyone who is serious about following the trail the NPS has a terrific series of books that follows the trail all the way from Independence.

Back in the early 90s I flew out to Colorado to visit my sister and we we rode up to Casper Wyoming. From there we followed the emigrant trail all the way to Independence rock. It was freaking awesome ❤

Nice job on shoring up that marker. That's very cool that you took the time to do that!

Thanks for fixing that , the cattle will use it for a scratching post. Thanks

I won't swear to it but I think your "artifact" was an old Colman Fuel can from the 40's or 50's, after being used for target practice with a shotgun. Nice job on touching up some of our history, thanks.

I cannot imagine what it must have been like traversing this terrain in a Conestoga wagon.

I'm guessing it was alot of dying of dysentery.

They used regular farm wagons not Conestoga wagons. Conestoga wagons were to big and heavy. 😉👍

There are a lot of antelope and jackrabbits in Wyo. It was probably antelope you saw. A Jackalope is a little joke Wyoming folks like to play on people. A jackrabbit with antelope antlers.😉I love the history of the Oregon trail.

My brain has a strange tendency to forget nouns 😅 Been here in beautiful Wyoming about four years this month. I have a jackalope that sits on top of my dresser at home 😅 I love Oregon Trail history too!

@@MissingTrails I found out you can follow large parts of the Oregon Trail on Google earth. Fascinating! The trail is still there, all of these years later.

They have them as souvenirs everywhere you go in Wyoming. They're really cute ❤

Ezra Meeker didn't put that marker up. The Sublette Cutoff crosses Little and Big Sandy rivers, and then enters the desert, 40 miles to the Green River.

If the cattle can reach it with their necks, they will eventually knock it over from scratching. The key might be to have more rocks spread out in a wider diameter around the stone. The cattle don't like to stand on loose uneven rocks. It might keep them away for a while.

I am currently living in Alabama, but my wife (currently fiance) and I might be able to go check on the marker next year (2025). In the meantime I might do a search on KZbin, see if anybody has recorded out there recently.

The cattle are knocking the marker over. Using it as a scratching post.

It's probably the cattle that knock it over. They like to rub on things.

I remember when there was just a single stone marking the Parting of the Way on South Pass.
@NESig4 ай бұрын
Cows rubbing on it may be why it falls over too.
@michellewarmath781110 ай бұрын
Mr. Meeker would be pleased. Maybe the critters knocked the marker over by scratching on it. It sure is lonely out there.

Where's the Hwy? I couldn't figure out where the wagon tracks were when I stopped/Aug.will be 3 years ago/Aug 2023.seems like one marker I saw was 1959?But on the edge of the Hwy.

There is a "Parting of the ways" marker on side of route 28. They determined that it is in the wrong spot, this is the real one. It's 6-10 miles west of the marker on 28.
@kenuber4014 Жыл бұрын
I don't believe it's not so much the elements, as it is the cows rubbing on it.

I just realised how much more worn the ruts are on the "safer" route to the left compared to the right. But I bet that's just a coincidence brought about by local cattle ranchers and modern vehicles.
