Oh, my childhood. I always used to build totally mad rollercoasters that no sane person would go on. Pretty sure if you named characters Michael Schumacher they would always win go-karts, and if you named them David Coulthard they would always come in 3rd. Crazy that this game was coded by one guy.
@houndofculann1793 Жыл бұрын
Not merely "coded by one guy" but the guy also did it in assembly, which is incredibly hard and tedious as I understand it but also makes the game incredibly well performing for the amount of stuff that's in there. I watched a video about it, "RollerCoaster Tycoon: The Most Impressive Game Ever Developed" by Native Resolution

My equivalent childhold strategy cornerstone was the original SimCity on my old Amiga 500. Funnily enough my parents have just jettisoned the computer, still in it's box, to my house. It'll need a little tinkering to get it up and running again. I play on an emulator from time to time, but you can't beat the hit of the buzz and click of the Amiga floppy drive (perhaps only matched by the screech of audio tape games loading on the BBC Micro)...right, time for this aged Irish gamer to don his cloak of nostalgia and leave the building....

The original RCT was the game that really brought me into gaming, ~20 years ago. Because it and RCT 2 were made in assembly, they still work pretty well on modern machines. I actually played the first for a bit this summer, and was surprised at how well a lot of the game holds up by modern standards. Of course, a fan passion project that's been in development for years is going to have fixed a lot of problems or shortfalls. I guess that means I need to check it out at some point then. Thanks for the video, always love seeing people breaking out the nostalgia game.

the nostalgia is strong - i remember some of the strategy and its definitely not charging nothing for rides and placing kiosks not at the entrance!
@MrGhosta5 Жыл бұрын
You want to charge for both rides and entrance so that the free rides, half price entry, and free entry ads are fully effective. if the park entry fee or ride price is too low then those ads generate 1/4 of the guest they normally wood. In RCT2 because you have the cash machine pay per ride parks make much more money. You can use the built in cheat menu to add the cash machine to RCT1 parks.
@countluke2334 Жыл бұрын
Also guests will always generate and will always pay the entry if they have the money. Entry fee has nothing to do with how many guests spawn.

Unless they fixed it in Open RCT2, I always liked the fact that any ride could be a transport ride if it had multiple stations. Station launch coasters like the Station Circuit make great ones because they go really fast to get people deep in the park.
@MrGhosta5 Жыл бұрын
Guest don't actually use transport rides to navigate; the pathing ai isn't smart enough. Transport rides do have a special condition though. If a transport ride is free any guest will ride it. That includes guest trying to leave the park.
@chris999999999999 Жыл бұрын
@@MrGhosta5 So what? The guests still get on the ride and get dumped off deeper in the park. Ergo, a transport ride regardless of the underlying mechanics.
@MrGhosta5 Жыл бұрын
@@chris999999999999 It maters because guest will ignore the intensity rating on free transport rides. Free transport rides are the only rides a guest leaving the park will ride. That means a guest trying to find the exit can get trapped in the park if they keep getting on transport rides that take them back in. In the scenario twin rocks guest will ride the vertical drop coaster and then get stuck on the second rock because when they want to leave they'll refuse to ride the vertical drop coaster to take them back to the first rock.

So awesome to see this game revisited by such an amazing streamer! Thanks for the trip down memory lane and also showing how things can be designed properly (:
@dacokc Жыл бұрын
i always liked making paths 2x or 3x wide... that way people aren't complaining about stuff being too crowded all the time.
In RCT2, pay per entry is much worse than pay per ride. You can make insane amounts of money from pay per ride, especially since guests will pay surprisingly a lot. You can always make more money from pay per ride from pay per entry. Pay per entry requires constant growth to make money, where as pay per ride gets you money for as long as the guests are there, which is the main reason pay per entry parks are way harder than pay per ride parks. In addition, if you charge per entry, then guests will be willing to pay much less per ride. There are a lot of mechanics relating to guest generation that would take longer than to explain than what is feasible in a KZbin comment (Although there are great guides out there), but there is no reason to not squeeze out as much money as possible out of your guests. As long as you don't overcharge you are fine, and money is incredibly important as building more rides and advertising are the best way to get more guests. Also guests will pay the max 20.00 for umbrellas as long as its raining, so jack up those prices.
@Jack_Rakan Жыл бұрын
Don't guests ALWAYS pay the entry price if they were spawned in and can afford it? Meaning your park may just have a ride with a 20c entry price (to be available for advertising campaigns) and a food/drink stall, and with advertising you can generate a ton of guests that will all pay like 50$ so long as that's the minimum they can spawn with on said map?

For those unfamiliar with the series: this is the love child of chris sawyer. He spent years developing this game. He hardprogrammed everything. It was never meant to be a hard game but a game you learned by playing and making things look good. Openrct2 is the community’s upkeep to the game. They added a lot of new tools and coasters and things. They are also trying to make the code a bit more standardized. This game is really good and some of the things people build is absolutely bonkers realistic.

As a small tip guests will always pay the entrance fee (if they have the money) but if the fee is too high then they won't think it's a 'good value' and it will negatively impact some other aspects. (I think guest generation rate and maybe guest happiness?) So yeah no worries about a guest turning away at the gate.

Kinda random but can anyone remember the name of a game that came out around the same time of RCT2 (late 90's/ early 00's), it was a medival town-builder where you had to too go from setting up a grain field too feed a sheep pasture, which would enable your tanner to make hides. Too get your blacksmith going you also had too feed into different recources first, stuff like that. Bit of a cartoony visual style, atleast more like RTC in style then Age of Empires, for example. Been thinking off it for months now and its doing my head in ;P
