Revisiting the PlayStation TV 3D Display

About a decade ago I picked up the PlayStation TV 3D and it's stuck around in my regular gaming in some form or another, even today. TECHNICALLY it's called the PlayStation 3D Display, but we'll get to that in the video. For now, just know that Sony put this out way back in 2011 and I just wanted to have some fun showcasing how it holds up today.

@@travisporter357 it's actually pretty cool, obvious more so with some games over others. Simul View is a cool little feature too. Games that supported lets other people put a different pair of the glasses on and see what you're seeing! I was always really huge into 3 d and holograms and stuff, but I will say I've seen a lot of folks pay wayyy too much for it. Especially the ones that just wanted to "try" it. Definitely check it out if you see it for a good deal though 🫡

It's funny, your story for how you found one and why you bought it and how you used it it's pretty much exactly what happened with me. I ended up buying this as a monitor for my Xbox 360 on a sale at Best buy for around $100, it might have even been 75 it was very very discounted and on top of it being small and portable it had 3D which would allow me to watch the 3D movies that I had in my collection, but the main feature that is kept me from selling this display and kept me using it either as a game or PC monitor for over a decade is just how light and portable it is. I have taken that monitor to friend's houses, on family vacations, to college, and pretty much anywhere I went that I thought I might want to play a game. Just last week my wife was looking at and she was like why don't you sell that thing and I realize it was because of how reliable and portable it has been more than anything else that and it still looks good to play 1080p games on today.

Dude YES! I constantly take this and my Series S on-the-go if I'm headed to a friend's house for Call of Duty or something. That way I can leave my Series X hooked up at home and have a nice little 'away' setup! Glad you're still getting use out of it too :D

This is something that has been on my want list forever but never found one locally at a decent price! Yes I know it's technically old tech but I want to test 3D gaming and movies (since I've never experienced it) and it would also be a great monitor to play PSP with the component cable! They’re pretty good. I still use mine. I bought it back in 2011 but didn’t really use it much back then. Started using it a lot more from 2018 when my laptop screen stopped working and I used vga to use the monitor whenever I wanted to use my laptop. I’ve been using it a lot more now. I have my 360 s and my ps3 set up to it. Never got much use out of the glasses before they stopped working. Good little monitor though. Small enough to take with me if I was staying away from home.

Pick this up on a Black Friday deal at Best buy Way back then for 100 bucks. Still runs crispy and is now my dedicated switch and PS3 monitor. My only issue is the super glare other than that looks super crispy especially with the lights off at night.

I've had a refurbished one for about 6 years now. It's a good display. Any Sony remote will work with it and the 3d is a great bonus. But beware the 3d glasses it comes with tend to lose battery life and have to be replaced.

I still have the original one I bought back in 2011. I’m using it now. Held up pretty well. I will have to buy new 3D glasses on eBay because my original ones stopped working after many years of not being charged and used.

I don't know why but there's something really nice about the image quality on these things. I bought one new 11 years ago and it has barely been used. Hooked it up today out of curiosity and was blown away by the picture.

Just wanna give people some knowledge on the issue if they had or may have later, recently fixed my cech zed1u 3d display with new matching rating low esr capacitors and it been working great 2hrs use and no random blackouts per 40mins or full shutoff I use to experience 😞

I just picked up one on ebay for $150 with free shipping. They seem to be selling for around $250 consistently. (Check ebay sold listings). Anyway, I'm trying to see if I can use Nvidia's 3D glasses and a PC to play 3D games. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Not a bad deal! As for Nvidia I think you can use any Active Shutter 3D glasses but I'm not 100% on that

I have the PlayStation 3D TV as well but the battery in my 3D glasses is dead so I need to replace it; or somehow mod the 3D glasses to use CR2032 batteries instead of lithium so can easily replace the batteries as needed.

@@metal-videogamezex112 The 240hz works on 720p or lower. In 3D mode, this provides 120hz for each eye. 1080p is 120hz.

I have one of these... actually if you use a Sony Remote from a TV it works! Mine unfortunately the glass started separating from the bezel (I think the glue they used is just too old... but... I used it for 3 years of heavy use as my 2nd monitor. Worked great!

were you ever able to get anything higher than 60hz on pc for it. i know the dysplay is suppose to be 120hz with facked 240hz. but never heard of anyone getting over 60hz

@@YourPlayer2 honestly dont know. Its kind of stupid to begin with. The ps3 was barely able to get over 30 anyway. But what i remember at the time from owning it, is that the high refresh rate was for the 3 d only. For the split screen option. The regular viewing was still 60hz.

Well it's subjective I suppose. I think this is more of a collection novelty than a technical monster that can go toe-to-toe with modern TVs in a similar size. You won't get HDR or anything but as a lightweight desktop monitor for crips 1080P gaming I think it does quite well!

But from experience, using pc monitors with ps3 resulted in more blurry soft image quality similar to pc games at non native resolution, compared to good quality televisions from Samsung and especially Sony, where 720p from the ps3 look very clean and sharp.

I still use this on my desktop... well i play switch (splatoon 3) on it more using the pc nowadays. one thing you didnt mention (i think?) is that it has decent speakers (for a monitor or tv) and a built in subwoofer. i never felt the need to use headphones or separate speakers with this. i have used this display for gamecube and wii(u) in the past and it did a fine job too

The mirror surface of the screen makes the reflection super distracting, and I'm finding out some movies just "do 3D" better than others. Dredd 3D looked amazing, whereas Wrath of the Titans 3D is completely underwhelming. It's a solid experience if you can get the right movie and the right amount of light so the reflections don't ruin anything.

I still have this monitor, I have been tempted to hook it back up to play Cyberpunk 2077 on it. I did, when I first got it, play Skyrim, Elder Scrolls, and Dishonored on it. I was pretty hyped over the 3D, but then I got a VR headset, and never thought about the 3D on a TV again. I WOULD love to get one of the IMAX Parallax Barrier 3D screens that they used to demo True vision 3D outside of IMAX theaters, that didn't require glasses...but was told, the manufacture required they be returned by IMAX, and never made a version for public release.

Always wanted this TV I finally got one a couple years ago I ordered a pair of glasses to play Batman 3D but the glasses aren't working correctly I think I never got to experience the 3D But it's pretty cool I also have the sound bar that has PlayStation on it anyways I love this thing for what it is. The reliability issues are present on these, a lot of them were sent back to be refurbished. If you did buy one refurbished the chances of it dying are less. Fixing the issue is also pretty nuance and kinda' difficult-- so I do expect these go up in value (for working units that is). Then again it might follow in suite with the pricing of the Ps3 back-compat units since they are ticking time bombs.

@@YourPlayer2 This monitor really shines when dealing with analog signals or interlaced content. Hooking up an old system with Component gives a clean picture-- and I've tried many screens in the past. PS3 HDMI + DVD playback looks fantastic on this, and so does anime in general. It's my go to screen for PSTV games too. I think it's the way the screen is made (3d) that "cleans up" a lot of noise and artifacts, or at least makes it significantly less noticeable. If you have an older GTX card (pre 1000 series I think) and the associated legacy drivers that support NVIDIA's 3d, this monitor can take advantage of that; which opens up a huge amount of possibilities.

I had this tv for quite some time. What he say is all true. Does anyone played ps4 using this monitor? I have issues when it play certain games the image will be distorted when it reaches certain high frame rate. Im playing god of war 3 though on ps4

@@shortroundChris The PS5 looks amazing on this monitor. Better than my 60" Sony Bravia 3D tv. They both use the same motionflow 240hz technology but all my non-tech friends that visit me believe the 24" monitor to be 4k 120hz because how smooth it looks.

Not true ! I own 2 of theses monitor on each of my pc's. The image is INSANE !!!! Still today in 2022 ! It can go up to HDQ+ resolution 3590p with Amd cards. You just need to know how to arrange the settings in the monitor to bright out the crazy WOW image. If anybody needs my display settings let me know

Glad it's still serving you well! I only use it occasionally as a computer monitor nowadays but use it frequently for console lan parties and as a video production monitor :)

Not going to mention the nail in the coffin for it, the black screen issue where it goes black randomly for a second or two every 30 to 40 mins or so? I bought two and they both do this, LOADS of reddit threads on it dating back to release that they never fixed. Many units got returned because of it then it was discontinued. I still mine as secondary monitors because I can live with the black screen thing if im not gaming on it. But beware if you pick this up as a cheap primary display this will be a deal breaker at any price point. Maybe you'll get lucky and yours wont have this bug, but Im 2 for 2 with it so odds may not be in your favor Also the volume up button is the only with a bymp you can feel to know which button your touching without looking on this play, not the power button. Just slight correction there. You can see the bump on it in the video

Oh weird? I hadn't heard of that but never experienced it myself. Even since this video I use it daily as a monitor for filming videos and still kicking thankfully so fingers crossed it stays that way! Oops, good catch!

Dude. It was one of the few Sony TVs with the patented PSPZoom feature that, sadly, came out towards the end of the PSPs life. It looks really great, but pissed me off so much that we had wanted something like that at the inception of the PSP instead if that forced, shrinked aspect ratio you had to play psp games in with the component and composite cables forever. It’s better than all that hyperkin crap.

Those buttons at the is hard to access but if you have an android phone with an IR functionality, any Samsung remote control app should work 🤓

Update: on PC you can overclock this thing to 66Hz. I was able to with no problems.

Just buy something with a good game mode and high refresh rate. It was kinda small 24" for such high resolution. 1080p. It will work with og Xbox HD box.

@@YourPlayer2 after using one since 2012, I can say although it has issues, the color and clarity are nice. What I would do is press the input button on the PS3 remote to cycle back to whichever one I was on. It usually takes the green static out. But if the weather is cool, sometimes the mode would switch in the middle of playing. Annoying but tolerable all these years. I looked up the eeprom chip years ago and decided not to bother because something else would eventually malfunction but so far it's doing about the same. PS4 gives more static than PS3.

I bought this display on sale at Best buy years ago because it was discounted so cheap and as primarily an Xbox fan I have chuckled many times that I've been using it for over a decade and it's never connected to any type of PlayStation console. Xbox looks just as good on it.
