Great video! I have locs, 4c low porosity dense hair. For my P - Fractionated coconut oil infused with Amla and Brahmi (I can not use solid coconut oil or babassu oil. As a loose natural those oils were great for me; no Bueno on my locs). I tend to let it sit overnight for maximum penetration or if I don't have the time I sit under a bonnet dryer or steamer cap for 10-15min with a shower cap on). M - Very watered-down Kinky Curly Knot today conditioner or Giovanni Direct Leave-in Conditioner with Rosewater & Aloe Vera juice in a continuous spray bottle. P - Jojoba or Avocado oil in winter months, Grapeseed oil in summer.

@Curly Chemistry First, I would like to say thank you for providing such informative and highly beneficial videos which I have found to be both educational , and gives me the answers I could not find elsewhere. For years I hated my natural hair and hid it away under weaves and relaxers. I now know it was because I didn't understand my hair and how to care for it, or even how special and beautiful it is. My awakening happened in 2014 when I came across an article that explained the dangerous chemicals that relaxers contain, so, when I realised these chemicals actually seep into the skin and their potential, I knew it was my responsibility to act and treat my health with respect. I cut off my relaxed hair and began my natural hair journey which I have found to be both liberating and true to myself. My hair is a mixture of 2A, 2C, and 3C. It is low-porosity, with fine strands and lots of follicles so, when it is out I have lots of hair, and as you can imagine it also tangles quickly. I moisturise every two days, and my PMP routine is centered around coconut and olive oil as a prepoo, TGIN leave-in, sealed with Jojoba oil. Keep up the great work, lots of love from the UK!!

I use amla or coconut oil with rosemary leaves to prepoo, I have a moisture mix I made which has glycerine in it, and I seal with shea butter and two greases. I know it sounds like overloading my hair, but it's not. When I moisturize my hair it's good for two weeks sometimes three depending on the state it was in previously and then I moisturize again after the two or three weeks till my washday, so all in all, my hair only needs moisturizing twice a month.

Gels are considered stylers, however they contain a high amount of water. So they do have an ability to add moisture, however I don’t classify stylers as moisturizers. If you’re finding that your gels are actually moisturizing your hair then view it as the second step. I hope this helps. ☺️

Yes it can be for some people like me. My hair prefers to be moisturised at least every 24 hours. It's is happiest if I do a leave-in conditioning mist in the morning and a lotion-like leave-in and heavier cream in the evening. Also protective styling my hair in twists, flat twist or 2 or 3 french braids helps my hair to retain moisture. I deep condition with a conditioning heat cap for 30 minutes every week. I would say my hair is moisture trained now so I can get lazy once or twice a week and moisturise every 36 hours instead of every 24 hours.

Why are oils like coconut and babassu preferred for the penetration step over avocado oil and argan oil? I thought those could also penetrate the hair shaft?
@coriebarnes8680
@coriebarnes8680 3 жыл бұрын
Because pure, unrefined, cold-pressesd avocado oil (dark green, not yellow which is refined) and authentic argan oil is very expensive! Like, seriously, the real deal for both oils are expensive. The fake or watered down stuff that's cut with cheaper oils is low priced. Most people can't afford these two oils in their top quality form. But, coconut oil is affordable for all. So Natural Hair Hosts try to recommend the affordable products as much as possible. This way everyone can do the methods they suggest.

Avocado oil actually DOES penetrate the hair. Probably why your hair loves it. She just didn't include it in the examples. But, it has been scientifically proven that coconut, olive, and avocado oils penetrate the hair shaft. So, you're good. 😉 Babassu oil is very similar to coconut oil in chemical structure, but less greasy. So it's a great alternative. Murumuru butter is a penetrating butter, but it is expensive so most people don't have it in their regimen.

Its not wether the oil penetrates or not. Its how much of a penetrating oil it is. What I realized was that oil that leaves an oily film on skin penetrate the hair shaft better. Coconut, olive, black. Cstor, avocado, black seed. The light oils that penetrate the skin easily like jojoba, hempseed and stuff coat the hair shaft. I could be wrong, but I have been researching different oils since I'm a newbie. There is a scale of how penetrating the various oils are into harshest. Coconut being top dawg... that we know of!

I'm pretty new to pre-pooing! I've been trying to regrow my hair after most of it fell out due to a heart medication I'd been prescribed. Since then I've been researching hair growth products and methods and to be honest, I am overwhelmed!!There's such a plethora of information and products available that it's hard to know where to start. I don't know how I came across your channel but, I am so glad that I did! I feel like I'm finally starting to understand "Hair" and, more importantly, "My Hair". That being said, I am now trying your PMP method using Ayurvedic products. For my Pre-Poo I've been using Amla oil. To moisturize I use a water based cream product with Amla Powder mixed in. To protect I us a mixture of Almond Mint oil and Mahabhringaraj oil. I'd really like your opinion as to whether I'm on the right track here.

If folks are washing their hair once (maybe a couple of times) a week like most naturals do, if not *less* frequently, what is the likelihood that they could experience hygral fatigue, necessitating prepoo in the first place? From my understanding constantly wet/damp hair and over conditioning (esp on damaged hair to begin with) is the main factor for hygral fatigue and not a weekly/biweekly wash. Also if your M step has protecting oils in the formulation do you need to add more?

I usually wash my hair once a week and struggle badly with the ends of my hair. My hair dries VERY fast, especially the ends. As a result I can never get my ends smooth for a style and they knot up badly. I found this video and gave it a try after having it in a crochet for 4 weeks, starting with a coconut hot oil treatment that I let sit overnight. The difference was night and day--easy to detangle and hardly any fairy knots. I shared with my mom who had also taken out a crochet after 3-4 weeks and washed her hair. In addition to her regular complaints, she said her hair was hard and brittle and snapping at the slightest touch. She did the prepoo that night and the next day after washing/conditioning, said her hair looked and felt "so much better". For some of us, it is not about the frequency of washing. Every time, my hair will soak up all the water it can. I have been missing that oil/water balance.

@@EBlack2011 when is the last time you got a trim? Did you get a trim before your protective style? Tbh the way many naturals are using oils is just a way to mask (literally it's a layer) the condition of our hair whether that is weathered split ends that are tangling, product buildup, a lack of water in the strands. Oils are smooth and slick and so yes the hair will feel better but the hair is in the exact same condition underneath it

So my dilemma is I keep trying to wear my hair natural and the right side (back) of my hair will be beautifully curly but the left side (back) is straight no curl formation. The front of my hair is a total different texture from the back, which is softer and more manageable. It is like having 3 different textures in my head and nothing seems to make it all manageable. I have gone to the shop and had my hair trimmed and cut on numerous occasions to no avail. It's growing very well but I get so frustrated with the curl pattern I end up just straightening it and then I am back to square one because now my curl pattern has changed. What am I to do?

Clarify your hair 3 times in the shower and then do an ACV rinse on top of your hair mask or deep conditioner - leave on 10 to 20 minutes and rinse out. Research good clarifying shampoos for your hair porosity type and use a good hydrating shampoo as well. You'll definitely notice a difference with your natural curls all around.

My first time hearing about pre~pooing, but I’m interested in knowing more on how this would work or even help my sister locs. Right now, avocado, lavender, coconut, and tea tree oil are my go-tos for my dry scalp and I use a mist mixture with rosewater, witch hazel, and peppermint to moisturize but I never I mean never “condition” my hair (so I don’t get slippage) or prep before wash day. I use a clarifying shampoo which strips any product out. Would you also recommend pre-pooing for locs or the clarifying would defeat the purpose?
@naomibostonredd7695

Hi! I have small locs, not microsized or sister locs, but I do prepoo my hair with liquid/fractionated coconut oil. I've been doing this for a while and even though I use a clarifying shampoo it helps my locs retain alot of moisture. I can not use sulfates or glycerin which is in most shampoos, even the clarifying ones so it helps alot. Sometimes I follow-up with a sulfate free moisturizing glycerin free shampoo (Herbal Essences Honey & Vitamin B), but that is usually in the winter. I do use a very watered down protein-free & glycerin-free conditioner (Kinky Curly Knot today or Giovanni direct leave in) with other hydrating things like aloe vera juice and rose water in a spray bottle on my locs & roots on wash day and then probably again 3-4 days later. I seal my roots and locs with avocado or jojoba oil in the winter, grapeseed oil in the summer. I don't have any build up, because I am light handed and don't need much for my hair. I wash every 10-14 days. Hope this helps you in some way :)

Hi Tonya, great information as always. I came across your channel from another youtuber who recommended you. I've been bench watching all your videos going back to the beginning. I have a specific question. I water wash for the first 3-4 days after a shampoo wash and then shampoo again 3-4 days after the water wash. I would normally have to style/comb my hair daily and because of that I have a hard time combing and I would therefore have to moisturize but before I do that I would spray my hair with rose water or a tea to get it a bit more manageable/hydrated, then add my leave-in followed by a grease. So I would like to know if spraying my hair daily would be an issue? Btw I have a mixture of 2b and 3c hair.

I can't use raw pure butter, oil or grease.... wah!!!... Trichologists diagnosis. So I pre-poo with African pride or Curls Peace once a week..I moisturise daily with a leave-in spray mist or lotion-like/watery detangler and I protect daily with a heavier cream moisturiser (which has preserved butters and oils in the formulation). If things are getting really extreme in the winter I might put some silicone serum on my ends once a week but that's it. My scalp no longer likes grease, oils or butters. I really miss coconut oil. That was my jam when I first went natural in 2009. I have developed a sensitive scalp in my 30s. My hair profile/type is high porosity, ultra-fine, ultra-dry, high-density 4c pen spring sized coils.
