I think why they are bittersweet about being finished with highschool is not that they won't be able to play anymore. They can play in college yes, but they have to play with different teammates. Its more of a friendship/team spirit kind of thing.

My biggest question that was never answered in the manga was about coach Ukai. Like is he paid to just be a coach, did the advisor have authorization to find a coach and hire him? Or is he putting time in before and after school plus trips for training and games all pro bono... It is a public school after all, I can't think of many schools that have dedicated sports coaches. Maybe it's different in Japan

They can actually continue to play volleyball after but usually it's reserved only if you are really really really good and want to go pro or semi pro (like maybe kageyama) because in japan studies is the priority so much so that usually most of the student drops any extra scolar activity after their 3rd year. I'm not an expert but at least that's what I understood
