Would this technique work to connect my old 2012 iMac to my new 2023 Mac Studio as a 2nd monitor? I have a new monitor for Photoshop work and want to use the old iMac to watch videos while I work.

i've followed your instructions but the conversion is not working. i have a Apple M1 Pro Macbook and the same viintage IMac you are showcassing in your video. all the connections have been made, but nothing happens when i click command/F2. can you guide? thanks.

It didn't work! Boo! The thunderbolt connection does look used. It was the only one I could find on ebay. Could that be the reason? I'm so bummed.

I just had to dig around to locate a thunderbolt 2 cable! They are so old and hard to find, but I found it at Best Buy. Looking forward to testing this out when they arrive Tuesday. Question for you - I noticed you have a usb dongle of some kind in the back on your imac, is that a wifi dongle? Curious because my wifi card stopped working about 2 years ago. I bought a wifi dongle but it didn't seem to last - any advice/thoughts on this? Thanks!! I will follow up if this works for me.

Thanks for the video! I wasn’t sure if this was possible, but I didn’t want to get rid of the iMac 27” that’s still in great condition. However, I have the newest Macbook Pro and apparently this hack won’t work with the new computer. Thanks anyway!

Does it work with any MacBook Pro? I think The Apple website says it will only work with 2019 or earlier MacBook models.

Ugh I just bought the adaptor as I used to be able to do this trick with my previous macbookpro, but my new 2023 macbookpro doesn't seem to respond to the command F2 keys... Would you know any other way to get by?

no it doesn't unfortunately... been trying it for the longest time. Apparently that's because the 2017 iMacs doesn't have a display port.
