Reviving a 1998 TL1000R after sitting for 15 years

I had a 1997 TLS back in the day. It was my first Rocket. I rode wheelies on that thing all day long. They're heavy but a blast. Local riders called me the wheelie king and the curved man. After laying it down three times on the last accident I fractured my hip, wife made me sell it. Hip hurts worse now then back then but I just picked up a 1999 TLR 1000 to revive. Hence, the reason I stumbled across your channel. Hoping I'm successful as well. Maybe I'll post it on my channel once I get started. Picking it up tonight. May need to pick your brain lol. If you don't mind.

I'd be happy to help if I can. Biggest issue I ran into besides the tank leak was getting the injectors cleaned well enough. Runs like a dream now though

Thinking im about to pickup at 02 tl1000r tuesday. Running, gonna have to replace the stator, but hopefully itll all be pretty smooth. Not quite sure what im doing yet, but for 1600, seems like a deal.

That does sounds like a good deal, especially if it is in nice shape. These things go for $3500+ in decent condition

@@provinsgarage Only thing wrong seems to be that stator otherwise itll just be getting things back to new. My 08cbr has as many miles 23k i wish i could attach some pics- its not showroom, but ill be honest, looks better than if expect. Next cheapest liter bikes around here are in the 4-6 range so even if its not running more than 168mph its the "true" superbike look i like.

Thank you that was cool ,not what I was looking for 😂But cool .I'm needing to put my 1999 TL1000R back together after new pistons and cylinder and and pistons my timing chain is giving me a tuff time can't seem to understand what's wrong the builder homes in gear in the top of the chain to be on there it won't SketchUp enough to put the back lt in ?? Any help greatly appreciated

Good luck maintaining a good deal on the fuel pump to tank . These things are notorious for leaking.

mines fine after 14k miles. The problem is people over torque the bolts and don't use the correct pattern and warp the tank seal lip. Warped lip = poor seal. The bolts only need 3 ft lbs.

Just found you completely by accident. Just subbed. Would love to possibly take what you do not use, off your hands, so I can get the 2 project TLR's road worthy. I love the one yosh, one stock pipe. lol. My Tip over sensor fought me on the first bike I bought.

Just bought one that cranks doesn't start for $500 feels like electric issue from ignition switch have to play with key.

Same thing I had with this one. Had a bunch of worn out electrical connections as well as all 4 injectors being stuck closed. Ultrasonic cleaner got them working right away. Fuel, spark, compression... and, unfortunately, wiring is where I would start

I bought it off a guy in Jacksonville Florida who had it sitting untouched for about 10 years sitting in his garage. As far as I know he got it from a salvage yard. Couldn't tell you anything before that but its definitely possible

where is the fuse box located on your tl i have the same bike but dash lights are not turning on

It's on the right side just behind the right front fairing while sitting on the bike. Sorta just below the dash on right side.

There is a plug in the back of the bike (in the tail box, or along the side of the tail box) use that to put it into "dealer mode". This allows any error codes to be displayed in the dash. Search online for the shop manual. Do you hear the fuel pump when you first turn the key "on"? Check that you have spark. Does the starter work when you press the starter button? -if not, check all the interlock switches (side stand, kill switch, neutral & clutch). Also, if you happen to have flooded the engine, you will have to let it sit a few days to dry out, or change the spark plugs (ask me how I know).
