Reviving an Abandoned 1970s Margay Racing Kart and going Vintage Kart Racing!

In today's video, we go vintage kart racing! Our racing go kart is a late 1970s Margay we bought in Virginia almost 10 years ago that had been sitting up against the side of a barn, and the Yamaha KT100 engine was free to us by Aaron from Go Power Sports. In today's video, we mechanically rebuild the entire go kart, test it at Virginia International Raceway's kart track, and drive up to Concept Haulers motor speedway in Norway Illinois for the Vintage Karting Association's speedfest!

I’ve been following this channel since it was just a handful of videos. It was one of the first I had ever subscribed to and was excited for the next video. It was just a couple of guys and their hobby. The comment section was nothing but positive vibes and support. A mate of mine in England recently bought some old electric karts for his kids. Then he bought an off road kart. Then he tried to buy a 30hp 4 stroke motor for it, but the seller would only sell the kart complete. It's a proper race kart. He bought the whole kart for £800, but it came with receipts for £2,000 just for the engine. We were hooning it around grass fields, on slicks, Sunday just gone. Zero grip. Understeer, which could only be tamed by keeping the kart sideways all the time. It was a blast.

The twin engine kart that started on fire is a fox built by Vern Bergman. Engine mount came loose and stuck the throttle. I donated the rear wheels to complete the restoration. Love ya Bergman

Guys this brings so many memories back to me. I used to race karts back then as did my Son. I came out of drag racing a Jr fuel dragster in the early 70,s into kart racing . I ended Up having a Kart Shop in Okla city & became the #2 two Yamaha sales dealer at that time In the country. I could do a book on those times. But just glade to see this video. I talked to Lake Speed jr a few weeks back & found out his dad Lake Speed a former world champion & NasCar driver still comes back & races a C-Open at the vintage kart national Each year. I too have been following C&C since you guys were racing yard karts around John's dad's house. You have come so far in a few short years. Some of the wrecks you built were real head scratchers, but most have been quite impressive especially since they were built with just about no money. This episode was my all-time favorite since I raced karts on an amateur basis during the 1970's. Watching you was like being in a time warp! For two seasons, I raced karts that I built myself. I wasn't very competitive but it didn't stop me from having a ball! I would love to see more episodes featuring you racing vintage karts

Man this brought back memories! I had a Margay Ampak back in 79. I bought it brand new and had such a blast on that thing. The chassis was almost identical to the one y’all have but the engine was on the left side. It was a package deal Margay had back in the day. They had come up with a 100 cc reed valve engine called the LMR. It was fast but wasn’t as reliable as the KT 100. I could smell the Klotz in the air watching this. First kart I ever ran on was a Coyote straight chassis, then a Phantom Stalker offset. Grew up running dirt circle tracks. Now I run a Laser Momentum at 37 years old with a clone. Man has the sport changed.

i am a founding member of the VKA #0024 have my 20 year patch , it is great fun great people to run with !, i have a margay PRO-X that i run a MC-91B-1 on it , your KT-100 looks to need a full refresh if you want to run with the guys up frount . That is the exact setup I raced as a kid, The Margay with the KT100, I was always the youngest and lightest of all racers and I would dominate, all the dad's would bet cash on their kids races and my dad always came out ahead, we had a blast

For the shaft seals, It's good that you're using grease for putting it on though you could have also used Vaseline. It's pure petroleum jelly and old time mechanics would use it for assembly lube. That's why (at least at one point) you would see a container of Vaseline in a mechanic's shop, it also dissolves very easily in gasoline if you need to remove it. Also for tires you should add a little bit of soapy water to allow the bead to seat easier and faster.

Oh man this takes me back!! I raced karts from 6 years old until I was 25. So from 94 to about 2013. KTs were life back then!! And the aprillas 22k rpm. KTs we ran at 15k rpm

My dad was friends with Mickey Rupp and used to race his kart on Mickey's track in Mansfield way way way back "in the day", and I still remember going to the track. Imagine two of these engines or even 3-4 welded together on a kart! That would be insane UpTo 60+ HP with tuning and exhaust possibly 160hp , or just get a snow sled engine, that just sounds scary!

Kt100s have great sound with the expansion pipes. I have a KT100 motor with a pull start and it works wonderfully. Someone used to sell a kit for it , it's a snowmobile pull start and recoil. Goes on the electric side.

NORWAY!! no way!! That track is pretty cool. Raced there in regional and nationals for a couple years! loved the banked turn and the hop over the bridge on to the front stretch! i think the vintage can easily go thru the tunnel to pits but the newer ones are too wide.

The white lithium grease is fine. Two stroke oil also works fine. Just dont install crank seals dry.

I've been rebuilding 2 stroke outboards for 25 years and only used 2 stroke oil. I don't know how lithium grease dissolves in gasoline. Your gas and oil mixture is what keeps it lubed when running! Who knows!!!! Lol

The walbro 2 stroke carbs do have a pulse pump internally biggest issue is that the diaphragms get stiff and lose their elasticity reducing the volume and fuel delivery of the pump. the lower diaphragm is like the float on a normal carb it regulates the fuel input the other diaphragm is the pump if either loses it's elasticity it messes with the mixture. on carbs that have been sitting a while I usually take the carb off and dump the whole thing in a cup of e free canned 2 stroke mix and let it soak overnight. this has the best chance of getting the diaphragms to move again. love the old vintage 2 stroke racer. need to find one of the old twin engine racers lot of them ran old Mac chainsaw motors. Shiny side up. Rubber side down. DO NOT REVERSE!!!! :D

KT100 is a legendary engine. I want to put one on an MBK moped one day, deleting the belt/pulley system entirely, and changing final drive sides. .Look up MBK. 😉 Your KT needs a big K&N air filter with a outer dust cover. I would also run Amsoil Saber, or possibly Dominator.

It's cool that you guys are getting into Vintage Karting. I saw you guys at Concept Haulers. Your kart is a late 70"s Margay ProX. My first kart was a 1978 ProX with Yamaha. At the time it was one of the best racing karts available. There are several things you could have done differently which would have made it easier and better but learning is part of the fun. The cart I raced in the mid to late 70's had side mounted fuel tanks and two McCullough 101 engines. Cart Racing was pretty big in Colorado back then. Love the old cart! 👍

Great job fellas. I raced a Margay Expert with a KT100 in the late 70s and early 80s all over California. I do think there is more in that kart. With a tach temp gauge and some tuning advice it could be quicker. Not sure that expansion chamber is right for that long of a track, the length of the flex tube affects power band as well. Plus it sounded like your clutch was coming in too early. I'd lightly hone it (a fresh good sealing ring and a loose piston is a fast combo) and re ring it. Maybe fresh main bearings too. They get slower with age and state of the art bearings are free running compared to older ones. Do it again with a driver/tuner to help you with setup and racing lines.

@supertedogpriken I'm not dead serious on he's the holy man himself. I was just messing around making funnies. I understand what you're talking about. I cut lawns for a living. All hand power tools are 2strokes. I run a half a once light in 2 gallon gas can of mix. It keeps from fouling the plugs out. But it could obviously burn out a piston also. Which I still haven't done. Normally the carb quits working. And I run the same trimmers and edgers. So I have plenty of parts. Never busted the internals in any of those 2. Foul plugs all the time when a helper mixes the oil to much. I notice when it's smoking a little bit more then normal. Lol
