This brought on PTSD! I bought my 99 Esprit new. I live in the mountains, and put all my cars through the paces on some really tight roads. Which means shifting a lot. Not ideal with one of these transmissions. I went through two transmissions, and eventually had the third one “built” I can’t remember who made uprated internal parts way back then. It threw a rod at 27k miles in 06. I bought a new elise the next day. It’s been sitting in a corner of a warehouse I own untouched since 06. I have a factory new motor for it. A handful of red ecus, two new transmissions, a bunch of glass. Knowing all of this stuff would end up becoming hard to find. Aside from the engine blowing and transmission issues. It had so many other little gremlins. I worked on it constantly. They look sooooo good, but man they are a pain to work on! I’ll eventually get it back on the road 😅
@rozap_83568 күн бұрын
Revive it! They are so fun. I'd bet the electrical gremlins are alarm related. Mine also suffered from that but has been pretty solid since I deleted the alarm.
@johnmitchell22698 күн бұрын
Those Renault transmissions can't handle the torque from the twin turbo's. This is why Lotus de-tuned the car down to 350hp. So why not ditch the turbo's and have a naturally aspirated V8 engine (with brand new higher compression aftermarket pistons) and be able to enjoy the car and push it hard and not break. The V8 Esprit engine is a flatplane crank engine anyway, so it would probably react better to being naturally aspirated. Less likely to over heat as well.
@skylerglass2888 күн бұрын
@@johnmitchell2269 The fact these are TT was the reason I bought it. I like the sound of turbos, and these feel basically NA when driving them. Regardless of how much power you take away, nothing is going to change the fact of how truly awful these transmissions are. Not only are they super fragile, simply shifting them feels atrocious.

Just my .02 cents, as a fellow former V8 owner... (Geez, it’s hard to believe the V8s are over 25+ years old already.) Anyway, if I recall, a Lotus mechanic once said, (either to me or I overheard him at a service center) that the twin-clutch setup from ‘AP Racing’ for the V8 cars was actually an “attempt by Lotus to protect the fragile Renault UN1 transaxles” from the brutal "shift shock" of hard acceleration during those initial shifts from zero to first, and then from first to second. It was something along the lines of, a mechanical means of increasing the holding force of the gear synchronization to ensure a smoother continuous engagement between the teeth as the first two drive gears were (for some reason) not helically cut. Gotta love British engineering! Sadly, those damn fragile transaxles were always the Achilles heel of so many Esprits, and unfortunately, as I am sure you know… The main reason why those incredible V8s were so horribly detuned down to 350HP & 295lb torque. Love the content, and keep up the great work! I've been subscribed since the red S1 and can't wait to see what you come up with next. - 👍
@mitchellkohrmann9 күн бұрын
Thanks I appreciate the kind words! The twin disc makes a lot more sense when you mention that. Luckily I’ve had good experiences with the v8 transmission but in my earlier 93.5 se I had 5th gear shatter while overtaking someone and hitting a bump. I think the wheel left the ground and the shock of it hitting again shattered the gear. My yellow car has the red race ecu and I think that’s the perfect balance of power for these cars. It still feels fast to this day

When it comes to these types of cramped engine bay heat control ,having the manual control of all fans with a switch is an easy 'fix' & life changer...also a couple of plate size extractor fans (like the Porsche 997 surge fans) are also doing a fantastic job at cooling that bay on demand & easy to install..like Chip Foose said..no matter what your project is..if you want a reliable motor and performance..go over the top when it comes to engine bay cooling ,oil cooling...etc...keep that engine bay ventilated & cool...especially with turbo engines...!!
@mitchellkohrmann3 күн бұрын
Usually that is something I worry about but typically not with the esprit’s. They don’t have a tray underneath so the engine and especially the turbos are almost in fresh airflow. They have plenty of venting around the engine and two big ones on top with the radiator all the way at the front. The guy I bought it from purchased it in 2018 from a nasa employee in Houston after it had been sitting for 10 years in her storage unit. The nasa employee actually bought the car from Jeff Bagwell originally which is pretty cool. When he bought the car in 2018 he registered it right as he went through a couple major surgeries on his legs and wasn’t able to drive the car. That plus the ecu and gas tank issue kept the car from getting on the road after his purchase. There was also an odometer discrepancy too as it was not functioning. So the car did transfer hands since 2008 yet it never saw the road. It would have been impossible to given the issues that the car was having. I was lucky he did get a $12,000 service on the car which mainly included redoing the oil lines but I think it stopped short of the rest of the issues due to how fast that one racked up the bill (it was seized on the engine side and the whole fitting section needed drilled out and replaced)
