I've received numerous requests for smaller designs, alternative methods of holding flowers, and ideas for when you have only a few blooms of each variety. Today, we're diving into a technique that hasn't been widely used in decades, but it's time to bring it back to the forefront of floral design.
In this tutorial, we'll explore how to create stunning arrangements without relying on environmentally unfriendly floral foam. Instead, we'll be using a technique that will not only hold your flowers securely but also bring a touch of nostalgia to your designs. Trust me, the results are amazing, and it's time for this style to make a comeback.
To get started, gather any small container you have on hand. It could be a ceramic swan, duck, tulip or fan-shaped vessel, a round bowl, or one of those charming elongated crescent-shaped vases popular in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The choice is yours!
Next, select your flowers. Dahlias, roses, camellias, and spring flowers are all great options. Use whatever you like or have available. The number of flowers you'll need will depend on the size of your container.
For this technique, you'll also need some chicken mesh or fine galvanized wire, as well as wire cutters and protective gloves. Please note that working with wire can be rough on the skin, so it's important to take precautions and protect your hands.
Join me in this journey as we rediscover and revive this classic approach to floral design. Prepare to be amazed by the beauty we can create with just a few flowers and a touch of creativity.

This is the second vase you've shown us that I have fallen absolutely head over heels in love with! Thank you so much for showing us this arrangement. I would have never figured out how to arrange flowers so nicely in it on my own

I’m excited about this small unusual container! My children and I are like your Nan; they will bring me anything that blooms and I have a large collection of different containers, mostly small and medium sized, I try to display and enjoy them in. The chicken wire gives me ideas for lots more ways I can use my containers!

Hi Claire, my joy and love of flowers started as a child. When I close my eyes, I feel not only my nan but also my mother. Gardens should be called the classroom of life because most that I know came from there. Looking, observing, seeing, touching, feeling along with the hidden dangers - bees and although not a bother here, spider's. In hindsight, that was my mother's fear. Fortunately not mine because everything that lives in the garden has a job. I laughed when you mentioned short stems. It took me ages to work out that you could do more interesting designs with longer stems. As mentioned, flowers should be called 'memory keepers', because that's what they are. I hope that in years to come, long after I've gone that my memory lingers when our grandchildren see or smell some of my favourite flowers. Very warm regards, Astar

It was a Sunday tradition for my Mother and me, weather permitting, to stroll in the afternoon through her beautiful gardens and enjoy whatever was blooming. It was then she taught me the names and growing habits of her flowers & shrubs. She is now 96 and we are doing more arrangements together rather than the walks. Your design does bring back memories and has brighten our Sunday afternoon! It is lovely! (Thank you for the tip to extend pieces of the wire out and over the container to help hold things in place.)

Good morning Converse, I'm pleased this has brought memories back. The joy of being in the garden is one of the most wonderful experiences & you are right, a great place of learning. I still think that spring is the best time, especially after a long winter. Those wee spring blooms are like hidden gems waiting to be discovered, picked and brought inside. Just the smell of one stem of wild freesia is enough to lift dulled spirits. Of late I've decided that flowers should be called ' memory keepers', because that's what they do. Warm regards to you and mother, Astar

Very lovely!!! My grandmother and I also would always pick camellias even though they didn’t last! Just too pretty not to! I also love this series because I hear so many of my older friends say that their kids don’t want their vases, china, crystal, whatever, and it makes me wonder if they just think they don’t know how to use them?! So good to show people the beautiful things that can be done in these interesting forms!

Hi Jesse, I have decided that flowers should be called 'memory keepers', because that is what they are. Whenever I see camellias or rhododendrons, I'm immediately rushed back to spending time with my beloved Nan. It's the same when I catch a smell of lily of the valley. Instantly, my mum is beside me. As for vases of the past, hundreds must have returned to landfill. It's as sad as discovering just how many fresh flowers are disappearing from our gardens because they went out of vogue. Plans are underway for my next season vegetable garden and this year, I am going back to companion planting just like they did in my youth. Who said sweet peas can't grow in amongst the peas/beans? It's a real joy to bring these designs back, as is encouraging people back into the garden. Very warm regards, Astar

Hello and good morning Matrix, now foraging is what I love to do on a Sunday morning. I like to get up early and just be at one with nature. I'm sure the neighbour's find me oddly strange walking up the drive with basket in hand and equally puzzled with what's spilling out of it on my return. Constance Spry, who I refer to as the grandmother of all floral designers, would often quote - ' the difference between a weed & a flower is just an opinion'. She loved using garden blooms with hedgerow finds, grasses & seed heads along with inter-seasonal finds. Wonderful and something I'm going to encourage others to do. The joy of what the botanical world has to offer is priceless. Warm regards, Astar

Nan was a wonderful, kind loving patient and very tolerant teacher. I'm not sure what she would think of life today, but I suspect she'd hate that we've moved so far from the simple things. Kind regards Astar
