Reviving History: The Rosenwald Schools' Legacy of Education, Equality in the Segregated South

African American history is still being written as grassroots efforts seek to revitalize old schoolhouses known as Rosenwald Schools, which brought education to African American children across the segregated South.
In the heart of Cumberland County, Virginia, stands a beacon of historical significance against the shadows of a segregated past: Pine Grove Elementary. Constructed in 1917, this institution is one of the over 5,000 Rosenwald-Tuskegee Schools, a monumental partnership that transformed the landscape of education for African American children across the South.
"You're standing in the midst of history," said former Pine Grove Elementary student, Muriel Miller-Branch.

I attended Roland W. Hayes Elementary School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, 1958-1964, a Julius Rosenwald / Booker T. Washington School. Today 2024 our Neighborhood has formed a Core Committee and was donated a plaque, which has been ordered. A Memorials plaque that will be placed on the Home of The Bessie Smith Cultural Center's property located on Martin Luther King Blvd. in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This plaque will represent our school Roland W. Hayes Elementary, and to thank Julius Rosenwald and Booker T. Washington for their dedication and gift to Black Education. Plans for this plaque and placement should be finalized by the end of 2024. 🙏 Miz Rose Core Committee Member

That's true until the Civil Rights Movement of 1964 passed. Then those that opposed it moved to the Republican party.

I grew up with racists, they were all democrats until 1964 until Goldwater. Then they all became Republicans because they blamed democrats for ending Jim Crow.
