It's FINALLY time to get back to my German studies and not only revive the skills I once had, but take them to a nice, advanced level AT LAST!
Best of all, I'll be documenting that journey in this new series! In the first episode, I share my own basic principles for getting back to a rusty language 😄

So many KZbin videos feature such obviously fake and over-the-top excitement which just make them seem forced and disingenuous. Your videos have that excitement and up-beat nature, but it comes across as so much more genuine and natural, it's such a breath of fresh air!

I've been thinking of relearning Icelandic. Not sure if I will because I ended up quitting because of a lack of comprehensible input. I think I'll wait until certain languages are past the language barrier.

I took your advice. I made a language tracker! It is pretty nice. I have listed all my languages, about 10. Everything from Russian to ancient Greek to Swahili. I also made a tracker for Duilingo and Word 101. I do those every day too.

Perfectly timed as I'm also working on reviving and improving my German. I also find that I have that instinct to go back to the amount I used to do in a language and have needed to work on adjusting to studying languages again after a year off. I've really been loving these frequent chats! Looking forward to your future German videos :)

I've started learning German and have found KZbin an excellent resource. I also note the words including their articles and plural endings in Excel which I then insert into Anki for spaced repetition. This is on the basis that I need to perfectly learn these words. Do you learn lists of words when learning a new language? Would appreciate your advice on whether you think this is a good strategy?

It wasn’t till the end if the video that I saw that you haven’t read a book in German yet. Crazy but I taught myself everything about German while reading novels as a beginner. Read some of The Hobbit (German edition), read a little grammar from the Oxford German grammar book I had, cram some vocab I got while reading and repeat. Anyway, I really enjoyed reading novels in German. Don’t wait too long before jumping in.

Here's a related question. What if you study a language using one method but want to improve using another? I wanna try and relearn hiragana using the Remember the Kana method (I feel like it'll help me to recall the characters from memory easier), but I still seem to be stuck since my old method was the classic "write the characters over and over again until you remember them" method. What do you recommend?

A fellow Austrian novelist. I have to admit that I have not read anything by Seethaler yet, maybe I now need to check into his works. Alles Gute fuer Dein geplantes Deutschstudium!

Hey Robin, I have a question that I think you can help me with At the moment I can comfortably enjoy listening to the news and podcasts with a narrative like radio ambulante but it's still very challenging to understand tv shows like case del papel, its not so much the vocab but just the way people speak, to overcome this do you think its just a question of immersion time/how do you approach this barrier?

Hallo!

Learning Italian the hand movements stuck with you. Does this series mean you're stopping Mandarin? :`~( What attracted you to the German book?

Hi Ronald!! Thanks so much for all your great comments and support, I read them all and I’ll definitely work my way through each one as soon as I can 😄 Regarding the series, you have nothing to worry about there! I frequently run multiple series at the same time to keep things varied and interesting - Mandarin learning and updates won’t be going anywhere! 😄 As a matter of fact, today’s video was a Mandarin update! Hmm so I was looking for a novel that was fairly short and manageable, something that was not too inherently complex like a detective story, and maybe something as close to just a delightful and interesting life story as I could find. To my surprise, that’s almost exactly how everyone seemed to describe this book! It seemed like an absolutely perfect fit for a first novel, but I guess we’ll find out soon enough!

ロビンさん、ドイツ語の勉強もとても面白そうですね!これからのビデオが楽しみです。ドイツ語の小説が読めるようになったらいいですね!By the way, for you to achieve your goal of being able to read novels in German, will you be memorizing lots of words from a dictionary aside from taking Babble lessons? As I am learning Italian now, I am debating whether I should get serious about studying an Italian dictionary page by page. What’s your take on how to effectively acquire an extensive vocabulary? I’d be delighted if you could explore this topic in your future videos. :-)
@askayscha
@askayscha 4 жыл бұрын
just throwing in my two cents but just reading the book is enough. no need to read a dictionary page by page when you can pick up words in books as you go along. personally for italian i read and take notes simultaneously and have amassed a lot of vocab this way. you could also use an srs system like memrise and anki to help the vocab stick!

@@askayscha Thank you for your input! I've never taken notes while I'm reading a book, so your suggestion is something that I can explore in my future studies. I am a huge fan of Anki, by the way. :-)
