Cartoon Network بالعربية I see! So it was the Army that drained the marshes to to 10% of it’s water capacity over the last 50 years in order to clear more land for oil drilling and to flush out the deserters of the Iraqi army and the Shiites living there. Must have been ISIS that helped return the region to its former glory then! I’m being sarcastic if you can’t tell.

Saddam tried but he couldn't kill the spirit of the southern man of Iraq. He dried their lands, killed lots of families, and directed the rivers away from marshes after the 1991 Iraqi revolution which failed unfortunately. Things aren't back to how nature was in the 70s and 80s but it's getting there slowly. I was there a couple of months ago it's becoming more beautiful now with extensive greenery.

Very curious way of life ! They could be gardening a lot of vegetables, if they make mounds to grow vegetables.

I understand involving the politics, but the thing is... that it was a worldwide culture to think of marshlands as a non profitable areas, building dams and using nature as a machine to fulfill the human will... but now there is a deeper understanding of the human as a part of the natural system and the importance of these kind of habitats... So with or without politics, we as humans are getting more wise thank God!
