This is really good stuff, Wes. I learn so much watching how you work. You are doing the ancestors proud! You may not be in their genetic lineage, but you're definitely in the spiritual lineage.

Great video buddy!!! I learned a lot in this video Wes. I’m going back to fix some things on my bowl before firing. Beautiful designs. I can’t wait to see your results.

Thank you. These are my designs. The big panels are all supposed to represent the sun. The 4 small sgraffito designs stand for health, happiness, peace, and love. I hope to get it fired fairly soon but it is all weather dependent. Thanks for your kind comment.

👍 Do you create your own designs inspired by the old ones?
@airstreamwanderings368311 күн бұрын
In this case yes. These designs are basically mine but the painting technique and general layout is very much like the old ones. Thank you.

@airstreamwanderings3683 Impressive drawing skills, I'm impressed! 👍 The methods of the ancients are interesting. I just realized that they had extremely elaborate coloring methods.

I loved this video so much Wes! Thank you! If you don't mind, I'd love to know the meaning of the sgriffito symbols. Also did you just make up the sun motif designs? Can't wait to see you fire it!
@airstreamwanderings368310 күн бұрын
Thank you. I looked at a variety of graphics for the sgraffito to find something that would stand for health, happiness, peace and love (the way I end videos). They are meaningful to me but certainly not universal or meaning to others. The sun designs kind of came to me in a dream but it is all influenced by the ancients who deserve monumental credit for their creative brilliance.

Wes - fantastic lesson, thanks for sharing what you have learned. What are you using for yellow? I have had no luck with finding any pigment or clay that will stay yellow after firing.
@airstreamwanderings36838 күн бұрын
It is the rarest of colors. A fellow potter traded some. It is clay, not mineral. Wish I had a better answer. I'm still looking too.
@TheLawDawg7 күн бұрын
@@airstreamwanderings3683 I am going to try some yellow clay I got online and see what happens. I will let you know what I find.
@airstreamwanderings36837 күн бұрын
@@TheLawDawg my experience is that most yellow clay fires red, sometimes bright red. A white or grey clay with the right firing environment can get yellowish. Best of luck.

May I ask about your black paint recipe? Mine doesn't soak in like that and mine seems gritty. I use Andy's recipe. I did use levigated clay in it but I am wondering if the black manganese dioxide I bought isn't fine enough. I made a pot similar to this after watching your inspiring video. Can't wait to fire it but snowy here
@airstreamwanderings36836 күн бұрын
Good question. I "think" but I'm not sure that the particle size is very important. I've never had good luck with commercial manganese or iron oxide. What you might try is grinding it with a hard mortar and pestle, or putting it on a hard flat stone and grinding with a separate stone. Then levigate the mineral to get the finest of particles. It will levigate differently than clay because of its weight. Another option is to put the mineral on a stone along with your levigated clay and grind it with a stone. This seems to help. This video might help. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3a9eZ5vfat7macsi=1CU2-UhiBQyiuBfj Let me know if you have questions. Good luck. One more option. You can buy minerals as nano particles. I've not done this because it is expensive but I'm told it makes totally permanent paint.
