Great video buddy!!! I learned a lot in this video Wes. I’m going back to fix some things on my bowl before firing. Beautiful designs. I can’t wait to see your results.

I loved this video so much Wes! Thank you! If you don't mind, I'd love to know the meaning of the sgriffito symbols. Also did you just make up the sun motif designs? Can't wait to see you fire it!
@airstreamwanderings3683Күн бұрын
Thank you. I looked at a variety of graphics for the sgraffito to find something that would stand for health, happiness, peace and love (the way I end videos). They are meaningful to me but certainly not universal or meaning to others. The sun designs kind of came to me in a dream but it is all influenced by the ancients who deserve monumental credit for their creative brilliance.

How much of and how strong was the vinegar you used?
@airstreamwanderings3683Күн бұрын
I used regular store-bought vinegar and hydrated the clay as if it was water. I do think that vinegar can help bond clay pieces. Thanks for you comment.

Thank you. These are my designs. The big panels are all supposed to represent the sun. The 4 small sgraffito designs stand for health, happiness, peace, and love. I hope to get it fired fairly soon but it is all weather dependent. Thanks for your kind comment.

it doesn't defy explanation. you just dont like where it leads. it is a record of evil, the satanic, the demonic, in a past culture.
@airstreamwanderings36832 күн бұрын
I think there are a number of interpretations but we will never know the whole story.

Did you use regular building bricks or specialized high fire bricks?
@airstreamwanderings36832 күн бұрын
I am using cement paver bricks that cost less than $1.00 each. Unfortunately they break easily due to the high heat. Fire bricks would be better but much more expensive.

I wanted to add for somebody just getting into pottery often universities and community colleges have classes. You can have a better chance of success with the first efforts using commercial clay and /or standard firing. Especially for kids, that would be good to not have the disappointment early on of their work cracking.

Impressive demonstration! Good job! What is temper?
@airstreamwanderings36833 күн бұрын
Temper is a material added to the clay that does not expand (sand for example or ground up fired pottery) The reason is to manage the thermal shock when the pot is fired. The temper makes the clay more stable and less likely to break in the firing process. This isn't necessary with a commercial kiln because the kiln heats up slowly. Thanks for the question.
@Patrice-h1f3 күн бұрын
Wonderful demonstration! Do you think it would be possible at some point in it's making to make it hollow and put littler rocks or more tiny clay balls inside to make it a percussion instrument. Maybe make it out of clay that could be fired,can this be made to be more permanent?
@airstreamwanderings36833 күн бұрын
Definitely, especially if it was fired. There are prehistoric mugs that have a false bottom with little marbles in them so the act like a rattle. Native Americans also made rattles in various ways.

@airstreamwanderings36833 күн бұрын
You question comes up a lot. Technically this type of pottery is not food safe because it is so porous. I know people who drink their daily coffee this way.
@KKIcons3 күн бұрын
I remember back from pottery classes that it was sometimes hard to find low fire glazes that let the work remain usable for food and drinks.

Why do you say PAINT when you're referring to applying glazes?
@airstreamwanderings36833 күн бұрын
This pottery doesn't get hot enough for a glaze and it doesn't seal the pot. With primitive pottery the decoration is typically called paint.

Hi Wes, thank you for the video. Was the cup glazed inside?
@airstreamwanderings36834 күн бұрын
Thank you. No, there was no glaze. The temperatures in these fires doesn't get hot enough to glaze. The pottery is ceramic but it is still porous.

@jorogers34555 күн бұрын
Sir, Pottery is glazed, not painted.
@airstreamwanderings36835 күн бұрын
This pottery is low temperature and sintered and does not get hot enough for a glaze. With primitive pottery I think paint is the correct term. Thanks for you comment.
@warrenwalker81705 күн бұрын
hardwood charcoal burns 50° hotter than briquettes this is well known in the cooking industry and why you got a better steak with hardwood charcoal. Also briquettes have wax to hold them together so if you're cooking food with briquettes that isn't completely red then you're cooking with wax fumes potentially
@airstreamwanderings36835 күн бұрын
Agreed. I prefer using hardwood lump charcoal.
