Here's a brief description; but I probably do it in a different order than others. Most of the time, the hybrid CR-V is an electric vehicle. What that means is that only the 181 HP electric traction motor is driving the wheels. But some people will confuse "electric vehicle" with "battery electric vehicle." The difference is that a BEV gets all of its electricity from a battery, while this CR-V gets most of its from a gas-engine driven generator. The rest of the time, a clutch engages and the engine is driving the wheels directly (but the traction motor is still engaged) The advantage of this system is that the engine's power does not have to match the needs of the car at the time. The disadvantage is that there are losses in the conversion of mechanical energy to electricity and back again. The "holy grail" of engine design is to achieve 40% efficiency. The engine in the CR-V can accomplish that as long as it is generating between about 22 and 55 horsepower. It can do this most of the time by using its three modes: 1) Hybrid Drive. The engine is generating somewhere between 22 and 55 HP, and driving only a generator. Its rpms are determined only by where in this power range is closest to the car's needs. The "Power Control Unit" sends as much power to the electric motor as the car needs. If this is less than what the generator produces, the excess charges the battery. If it is more, the battery supplies it. 2) Engine Drive. The clutch engages, so the engine is driving the wheels. This avoids the conversion losses, but rpms are determined by the car's speed. The 181 HP traction motor can add or subtract power in the same way as the PCU did in Hybrid Drive. (This usually at speeds between about 40 mph and 75 mph, with low acceleration.) 3) EV drive. The engine is turned off, and only the battery powers the traction motor. This uses up the energy saved in Hybrid and Engine Drive. But unlike other hybrids, this CR-V can do this at any speed.

Hello Everyone - I bought Honda CR-V hybrid 2021 …one thing I noticed when I start the car for first few seconds or half a minute I hear a ratlling or a different sound and it disappears when car crossed around 20 mph …and sound never comes back again and drive becomes seamless…just wanted to check if anyone else had that kind of experience …I think it might happen because of battery to gas transfer but not sure ..appreciate if any one could answer …i was thinking to bring this up with Dealership next week during my first oil change …

I used to sell Toyota’s and we had a few used Hondas. Honda has the most seamless transition with the hybrid system and is rather remarkable compared to Toyota and Kia. They are no frills appliance like vehicles that just work with out drawing too much attention.

The hybrid badging is subtle but that is a bad thing, imo. First responders in a crash situation need to know your vehicle is electrified. Rescue efforts can be delayed until the hybrid battery is disabled.

Imagine a safety maneuver (such as a collision with a wild boar), you manage to avert the collision, but the passenger has a seat belt cut to the neck !! Why didn't the structural engineers invent it the same way as in the front seats !!!
