I like how you depict not only the situation in China but also in neighboring countries. Fun fact: The Vietnamese Mạc clan being wiped out of the map at 2:07 was an indirect consequence of this revolt. After losing the Red River Delta to the Lê Dynasty in 1593, the Mạc had managed to maintain a rump state in that small corner of Northern Vietnam for over 80 years, relying on political support from the Chinese. But by choosing to side with Wu Sangui in this revolt, they lost Qing's backing and was quickly defeated.

Okay but that's too over simplified. Both Mac and Trinh supported both the southern Ming and the Qing. But it was the Trinh lord who took advantage of the tumult situation to accuse the last Mac emperor to side with Wu Sangui to eliminate them without the Qing able to clarify the situation. The Mac emperor later escaped to the Qing and was given a title by the Qing Emperor.

At that point in time, the Ming Dynasty had actually perished, and those in Taiwan were only officials under the banner of the Ming Dynasty. Who killed the last emperor of the Ming Dynasty? It's ridiculous to say that it is Wu Sangui in the video, Zhou's controller, and the initiator of the rebellion. So these people are just playing the banner of the Ming Dynasty, but in fact they are not on the same boat at all.
@taoliu3949
@taoliu3949 Жыл бұрын
@@ukdivisionsfa7737That's not completely true. There were a few Ming Princes who fled to Taiwan and continued to perform rites in the name of the Emperor. Yes, they weren't "in the same boat", but neither were the various factions of the Southern Ming.

I really like the background and texture you put into the map this video. Also purple is my favorite color, so you showing the rebels in purple was a very nice detail to the map. Good job on the video! It is kind of weird how Korea and Japan are extremely flat on this map despite being some of the most mountainous places in Asia, but they weren't the focus so it's not a big deal.

Once again, unparalleled levels of research and detail are evident! My only complaint is that it moves by too quickly! I think this genre of video could really be improved by slowing down the speed of the color flow and/or taking pauses to discuss the historical events behind them. I’m sure that a longer video with greater audience retention time would also do better with the almighty KZbin algorithm.

Wait, so the war was caused by some generals revolting because they _were_ allowed to retire? How does that work?
@yanxishan6575
@yanxishan6575 Жыл бұрын
They didn't actually want to retire. The explanation that is generally put forth is that they were "daring" the government to revoke their fiefs, and then the government called their bluff. It is admittedly hard to follow. Notably the actual text of the edicts and letters give the impression of total sincerity, but we can be confident that Wu Sangui did not, in fact, want to retire, and he was lying when he said he did.

1. Shang kexi wanted to retire (this guy legitimately did want to retire). Kangxi emperor thought this was a good chance to get rid of the feudatories. He allowed retirement under condition that his son won't inherit the title and his feudatory is to be abolished. 2. This raises extreme alarm among other 2 feudatories. Wu sanggui and Geng Jingzhong send fake retirement request try to test the emperor's intention. Kangxi emperor accept under identical conditions, which confirms their suspicions. Wu and Geng launches rebellion. 3. Shang Kexi remains loyal to Qing. His feudatory serves as important ally to Qing against the other two, early on in rebellion. 4. However his son Shang zhixin is not happy with his father, especially his decision to make his brother Shang zhixiao the successor. He launches coup and takes control of the feudatory, announces rebellion, and joins other two feudatories. He demands Kangxi emperor to recognize his title. As soon as he gets what he wants, he defects back to Qing. He is not forgiven and is ordered to commit suicide, but rest of his family is spared in recognition of his father's loyalty to Qing.

Question, why did the Qing succeed when Manchu's population was so low? Did they have the loyalty of some of the Han? Why did those Han choose them and not the rebels?
@yanxishan6575
@yanxishan6575 Жыл бұрын
More Han were loyal to the Qing than to the rebels, in fact. Although the Qing were foreigners, they had ruled China successfully for 30 years and proven themselves capable of good governance. It's also possible that Wu Sangui's reputation was poor because he was seen as a traitor. Wu Sangui had first served the Ming dynasty, then defected to the Qing, and while in Qing service he executed the last emperor of Ming. In this rebellion, he claimed to be restoring Ming, but in actuality he sought power for himself. This may have contributed to his failure to attract wide support.
@Adonnus100
@Adonnus100 Жыл бұрын
@@yanxishan6575 I see, that makes sense. Though I was under the impression that the initial Qing takeover was extraordinarily bloody, and no one liked being ruled by foreigners, but I suppose real history is more complicated than just that.
@erlingqiericyice1977
@erlingqiericyice1977 Жыл бұрын
@@Adonnus100 A significant distinction between Chinese history and that of Europe or other regions is that China was not ruled by feudal lords but by county officials appointed by the emperor. Theoretically, all land within the nation belonged to the state. If a foreign power invaded Europe, the lands seized would undoubtedly have to change ownership. However, during the Ming Dynasty, all lands were owned by the emperor, so if an invader took control, the impact on the populace wouldn't be significant, since they were already without property. If such an invasion could bring peace and stability, people generally wouldn't object to being ruled by the invaders, as was the perspective at the time. In contrast, there was no land in Europe or Japan that didn't belong to a lord. China didn't have a nobility system. During wars, civil officials would command military generals. There were no lords and their knight protectors, nor any Japanese samurai and their daimyos. To fully conquer Japan, you would need to defeat numerous clans. To conquer Europe, you would need to defeat many duchies. However, to conquer China, you would only need to breach the Great Wall, as the Ming Dynasty's emperor had already disarmed the entire nation due to frequent rebellions.

3 generals were actually rewarded titles of "kings" (王). Prince is rather a mistranslation on Wikipedia. The privileges granted were extremely extensive. They were allowed complete autonomy, had their own army, and were allowed to raise taxes on those provinces. Their children were married into Qing imperial court. Their titles were also hereditary and were allowed to pass to their descendants. 3 feudatories were way too big of a long term risk but Qing as a new dynasty weren't in a position to tackle the problem, earlier on when they were stabilizing their rule. After ascension, young Kangxi emperor wanted to abolish the feudatories by not allowing the position to be inherited. This resulted in the rebellion. Among the 3, Wu Sangui (later proclaimed himself as Zhou dynasty) was considered to be most instrumental to Qing conquest of Ming, and was awarded the largest territory. Wu was the guy who willingly opened up gates of Shanhai pass to Manchu, allowing them access to Chinese heartlands. Before this, Manchus were never able to break through great wall with their own power, so their attacks into China mainly consisted of limited small scale cavalry raids by taking long detour around Mongolia. The rebellion failed due to these reasons: 1. Lack of legitimacy. Wu tried to appeal to the support of the people, calling for "revenge for Ming Dynasty", even visiting and shedding tears at the gravesite of the last Ming emperor. But at the same time, everyone in China also knew that decades ago, Wu was also the guy who hunted down the last Ming emperor in Burma, and killed him by strangling him with his own hand to "prove" his loyalty to Qing. Wu was seen as a traitor to both Ming and Qing, and rebellion was met with limited support even among Han Chinese populations. 2. Lack of any unity among 3 feudatories. One of the 3 feudatories headed by Shang Kexi sided with Ming early on to stop other 2s rebellion. Later his son Shang Zhixin only "announced" joining the rebellion, but his agenda was only limited to Qing's recognition of his title, rather than overthrowing Qing. He remained relatively passive and limited his activities to around his own lands, and defected back to Qing immediately as soon as Kangxi emperor acknowledged his title. The 3rd feudatory led by Geng Jingzhong fought more actively, but they made mistake of backstabbing their Taiwanese ally, which led to unnecessary infighting. And he also made limited attempt to coordinate the rebellion with Wu's forces. 3. Wu Sang gui was too old by the time of rebellion, and died of old age early in the rebellion. His successor did not have the same charisma leadership or military ability, and rebellion was quickly defeated after his death. 4. Ming's ruler happened to be Kangxi emperor, who is considered to be most capable ruler in Qing history, and probably one of top 5 in all China's history. If Qing was headed by a weak emperor, there was a good chance the rebellion might have drove the emperor into abandoning Beijing, like how Ming did to Yuan dynasty. This of course did not happen.

"Prince" is a style used for rulers of territories that's smaller and/or with less rights than a Kingdom or Emperor. It comes from the Roman Empire title "princeps" that meant "ruler". The Feudatories had the title "Wang", but they weren't as independent as Joseon was. In this case, translating the Feudatory "Wangs" as "Princes" is appropriate. Translating as "kings" could imply that they had a degree of independence on the same level as Joseon.
