The reason it worked for Pac is because he didn’t go into detail about it, he wasn’t crude. The rest of Hit ‘Em Up was hard af!. Jay bringing up Nas’s baby momma just came off as being petty and desperate, like a boxer who’s on the ropes and tries to low blow just to survive the round.

I was 25/26 years old in 2001. I remember arguing with dudes about Jays response. A man can’t get props for going after another man. Period. It is unmanly to brag about sleeping with a guys ex as if doing that gives that dude a one up. I’m happy that this is over because in my opinion Jay was winning the battle with his great music! Mentioning Nas on takeover ruined Jays advantage at the time and propelled Nas over Jay even though Jay z was and still is way higher than Nas money wise. Jay didn’t need to mention Nas at all on Blueprint. Nas at the time was down and not really invested in hip hop because his mother was sick and soon to pass. “Don’t poke the bear”. This might sound mad for someone as talented as Jay, but I’m not really sure that he’s a proper battle rapper on record. I think Jay would body most people if it were a freestyle, but when it actually comes to wax, he’s maybe a bit too subtle or not direct enough. What do Hit ‘Em Up and Ether both have in common (aside from 2pac’s voice on both intros? 😂). It attacks the problem head on. With Hit ‘Em Up - just 2pacs intro alone is all you need to remember, and you’re like “damnnnnnnn”. With Ether, just the intro “F*ck Jay-Z” stays in your head. So even though to some, Takeover had better poetic value than Ether, Ether was just a harder hitting more destructive record. If Jay has that unapologetic land with Takeover, it could have been game over. And I’m actually a Nas fan!
